editFrom Proto-Baltic *sek-, *sak-, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *sákīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *sekʷ- (“to say”).
Cognate to Latvian sacīt, Russian сочить (sočitʹ, “to emit (a liquid)”), German sagen (“to say”), English say and Latin inquam (“to say”). Compare sekti (“to follow”) from e-grade *sekʷ- (“to follow”).
