editEtymology
editFrom French mais (“but”), from Old French mais, from Latin magis. Perhaps merged with a descendant of Middle High German niwære (“but, only”). Rests of such forms (mär, mar, mor) are attested in several dialects not far to the east and north of Luxembourg. It is plausible that this inherited word, which may already have become dated, was absorbed by the French borrowing. Compare Dutch maar and Luxembourgish nëmmen.
