Etymology 2
editPerhaps identical to the northern dialectal word liesu (“foxhole, burrow”), which is a Sami borrowing (compare Northern Sami liessu), due to the propensity of these plants to grow in rock crevasses. Within Finland, the plant grows only in Lapland, which makes up much of the north of the country (although it has also grown in Aland in the past). Already attested in Elias Lönnrot's Flora Fennica (1860), the earliest major botanical work in Finnish.
