Old Norse
editEtymology
editFrom Proto-Germanic *lesaną. The sense “read” is derived from West Germanic (Old Saxon or Old High German), a semantic loan of Latin legō (“gather, read”); for reading the Germanic runes, which were in use before the adoption of the Latin alphabet, the usual verb had been ráða (same as English read).
