Tagalog
editEtymology
editPossibly related to Proto-Austronesian *aCay (“death”) (compare Tagalog matay, patay, and bitay), or from Hokkien 共伊刣 (kā i thâi, literally “have it/him/her slaughtered”) according to Chan-Yap (1980).[1][2] See more at Hokkien 刣 (thâi) where the second element may simply be a substrate cognate word comparable to Proto-Austronesian *aCay (“death”).
