editBorrowed from a South Slavic language, compare Old Church Slavonic доухъ (duxŭ, “spirit”), Serbo-Croatian duh (“ghost, spirit”). Ultimately derived from Proto-Slavic *duxъ (“breath, spirit”); compare its o-grade counterpart *dъxъ (“breath, whiff”).[1][2]
