From a derivative of greer, agreer (to rig, equip), from Anglo-Norman agreier (to equip, equip a ship with tackle), from a- +‎ *greier, from Old Norse greida (to put in order, prepare, arrange), from Proto-Germanic *garaidijaną (to prepare, put in order), from Proto-Indo-European *reydʰ- (to put in order, make comfortable). Cognate with Old English ġerǣdan (to arrange, assist), Middle High German gereiten (to arrange, prepare), Middle Dutch gereide (equipment, harness). More at ready.
