galia +‎ -ėti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *galḗˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *gelH- (able, powerful), related to Proto-Slavic *golěmъ (big), as well as Proto-Celtic *galnati (to be able) (whence Welsh gallu (to be able)) and *galā (ability).[1][2]
