auslassen (class 7 strong, third-person singular present lässt aus, past tense ließ aus, past participle ausgelassen, auxiliary haben)

1. (transitive) to leave out, omit

   Sie ließ die Fragen aus, die sie nicht sofort beantworten konnte.

   She left out the questions she could not answer immediately.

2. (transitive) to melt (butter etc.); to render down (bacon, fat etc.)

   Butter im Topf auslassen und dann die Zwiebeln hinzugeben.

   Melt butter in the pot and then add the onions.

3. (transitive) to let out (clothes)

   Die Hose können wir im Gesäß noch etwas auslassen.

   We could let out the trousers a little in the seat.

4. (transitive) to vent, air, to take out [with accusative ‘a negative feeling’ and an (+ dative) ‘on someone/something’]

   Schön, dass ich mal meinen ganzen Ärger auslassen konnte.

   It was nice that I could vent all my anger for once.

   Sie haben sich in der Presse recht abfällig über Ihren Vorgänger ausgelassen.

   You have commented rather disparagingly on your predecessor in the press.
