editFrom local Medieval Latin viam curritoriam, documented in 1106: compare curritorium (“covered way into buildings”);[1] derived from currō (“I run”) or currus (“chariot, wagon”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱers- (“to run”), + -doiro from Latin -torium.
