A Central and Low German word from Middle Low German [Term?] and northern Middle High German kūle, ultimately from the root of Keule (club).

The regular High German development is seen in older Kaule, the modern form was introduced via German Low German. Cognate to Dutch kuil, Luxembourgish Kaul.
