From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *la (“donkey, ass, mule”); cognate with the first syllable of Jingpho [script needed] (lo³¹ kuŋ³³, “donkey”) (STEDT). Note also similarities to Old Chinese 驢 (OC *b·ra, “donkey”).
