From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ʔ-bu ~ *pu (to be born; birth; bud; bloom). Cognate with Jingpho pu (to bloom, bud), Old Chinese (OC *buʔ, “big mount; abundant”) (STEDT), as well as, per Luce, (OC *pruː, “bud; luxuriant”).[2]
