From Old Khmer វាង៑ (vāṅ), វាង្ង៑ (vāṅṅ), វង៑ (vaṅ, enclosure; citadel, fort, fortress, stronghold; palace; to encircle, to enclose, to surround; to bar, to block; to screen, to shield; etc), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *wa(a)ŋ (enclosure). Cognate with Khmer វង់ (vŭəng), Lao ວົງ (wong). Doublet of วัง (wang) and เวียง (wiiang).
