From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *rap (to cross (river), to ford, to wade) (provisional) (STEDT). Cognate with Tibetan རབ (rab, ford) & Jingpho [script needed] (rap⁵⁵); possibly unrelated to (OC *raːds) (Schuessler, 2007).
