editInherited from Proto-Slavic *ogrъ, which can be compared to Lithuanian ánkštara (“cysticercus, larva”), Old High German angar.[1] Cognates include Russian угорь (ugorʹ), Ukrainian вугор (vuhor), Polish wągr, Czech uher, Slovak uhor, Upper Sorbian wuhra, Lower Sorbian huger, Serbo-Croatian угрк (“worm, larva”), Bulgarian въгарец (vǎgarec), Slovene ogŕc (“worm, acne, larva”).
