From Middle High German negellīn, negelīn, diminutive of Middle High German nagel. By surface analysis, נאָגל (nogl) +‎ ־עלע (-ele) with umlaut. Compare Alemannic German Nägeli, Negeli, German Näglein (archaic). Compare also German Nelke, a back-formation from plural Nelken, from whence נעלקנ־ (nelkn-), as in נעלקנאייל (nelkneyl, “clove oil”); as well as German Nägele, now chiefly attested only as a surname.
