editFor earlier τάμνω (támnō), with ε from aorist ἔτεμον (étemon), from Proto-Indo-European *tm̥-né-h₁-ti, *tm̥-n-h₁-énti, nasal-infixed present (the present tense system includes a N progressive aspect marker) from *temh₁- (“to cut”).[1]
Cognate with Latin temnō, tondeō, tempus, templum.
