From Ottoman Turkish اوده‌مك, اودمك (ödemek), from Proto-Turkic *ȫte-. Perhaps related with Proto-Tungusic *xuda- and Proto-Mongolic *kudaldu-. Cognate with Turkmen ȫdemek, Azerbaijani ödəmək, Bashkir үтәү (ütəw), Southern Altai ӧдӱ- (ödü-), etc.

Compare also Dongxiang ghudandu, Manchu ᡠᡩᠠᠮᠪᡳ (udambi, to buy), Manchu ᡥᡡᡩᠠ (hūda, business), Nanai хода (hoda, price), Mongolian худалдах (xudaldax, to trade).
