Perhaps identical to the northern dialectal word liesu (“foxhole, burrow”), which is a Sami borrowing (compare Northern Sami liessu), due to the propensity of these plants to grow in rock crevasses. The plant mostly grows in northern Finland, although it has had a wider distribution in the past. Already attested in Elias Lönnrot's Flora Fennica (1860), the earliest major botanical work in Finnish.
