Syllable
(deprecated template usage) 돈 • (don)
- (deprecated template usage) A Hangul syllabic block made up of ㄷ, ㅗ, and ㄴ.
Etymology 2
First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 돈 (Yale: ton). Various hypotheses exist regarding the etymology beyond Middle Korean. Possibly a pre-Middle Chinese borrowing, from 錢/钱 (OC *d͡zen, "money"). This word has also been connected with 돌— (dol-, “to turn, to circulate”) and 돌 (dol, “stone”).
Pronunciation
- (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [to̞(ː)n]
- Phonetic hangul: [돈(ː)]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
