Etymology 2

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean  (Yale: ton). Various hypotheses exist regarding the etymology beyond Middle Korean. Possibly a pre-Middle Chinese borrowing, from (OC *d͡zen, "money"). This word has also been connected with 돌— (dol-, “to turn, to circulate”) and (dol, “stone”).

Pronunciation

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [to̞(ː)n]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
