Etymology

From Old Turkic [script needed] (-lar), of uncertain origin, but thought to be of Common Turkic origin that was absent from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Turkic, as it is not found in the sister Oghur branch (namely (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Chuvash). Often thought to be derived from a grammaticalized form of *olar (modern onlar (they)), from ol (modern o (it, he, she)) + *-ar (hypothesized by some to be the original Common Turkic plural suffix).[1]

Suffix

-lar

  1. Used to form plurals of nouns.
    kurbağakurbağalar
Bu ülkede daima Mustafa'lar olacak. - There will always be people like Mustafa in this country.
Amcalarım bize gelecek. - My uncle and his family will come to us.

Usage notes

  • It's used when the noun's last vowel is a back vowel.
  • When the noun's last vowel is a front vowel, "-ler" is used instead.
