Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB) is a business school in India, located in Bhubaneswar, the capital of the eastern Indian state of Orissa. XIMB’s 20-acre campus in Bhubaneswar’s institutional area has modern classrooms, hostels, studio apartments, gym, a sports club and a multi-purpose auditorium. It owes its origin to a social contract between the stategovernment and the Orissa Jesuit Society in 1987. It is managed by a board of governors, consisting of representatives of the governments of India and Orissa, the Jesuit Society, and eminent industrialists and educationists.[1]

History

Inspired by the Jesuits spirit of 'Magis', XIMB strives to be a premier institute globally recognized for management education, training, research, and consulting that help build a just and humane society. XIMB was founded in 1987 and is counted among the premier B-Schools in India. In the years since its establishment, the Institute today has become widely recognised for its excellence in imparting management education. It offers an enriching array of programmes – the flagship programme - the Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), the newly launched Post Graduate Diploma in Management Human Resources (PGDM-HRM) the Postgraduate Diploma in Rural Management (PGDRM), the Part-Time Programme for Working Executives (PGDM-PT), Management Development Programmes, the Postgraduate Certificate Programme in Business Management (PGCBM) and the doctoral level Fellow Programme Management (FPM).[2]

Administration

The Director of XIMB is Fr. Paul Fernandes, SJ and the Dean (Academics) is Prof. Subhajyoti Ray. The Chairman of the Board of Governors is Shri Rajive Kaul (Chairman, NICCO Corporation Ltd.). Other members include Shri Bijaya Kumar Patnaik (Chief Secretary, Government of Orissa ), Shri J. P. Dua (CMD, Allahabad Bank), Shri Roopen Roy (M.D., Deloitte & Touche Consulting India Pvt. Ltd.) and Shri B. L. Bagra (CMD, National Aluminium Company Limited)

Academic Programmes

The academic programmes offered by XIMB are based on the standard model of management education practised globally. Since XIMB is an autonomous Institute not affiliated to any university, it does not grant degrees. However, the two year Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management and two-year Post-Graduate Diploma in Rural Management (PGDRM) recognised by the Association of Indian University (AIU) as equivalent to an MBA degree of an Indian University.[3]

Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM)
This is the flagship programme of the Institute.

Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Rural Management) (PGDM-RM)
The two-year AICTE approved PGDM (RM) program, since its inception 15 years ago, has strived towards moulding rural managers, with the heart of a social worker and the mind of a business manager, by infusing professionalism into rural development and management. The RM program has produced many stalwarts in different fields and it has a strong legacy of performance par excellence. It trains individuals and groups to imbibe and cultivate a sense of respect for the poor and the under-privileged, even as it nurtures in them an understanding of the factors leading to higher levels of motivation and performance to achieve organizational goals.[7]

International Exchange

XIMB has international exchange of faculty and students with the following institutions:

A Team of PGP second year students from XIMB claimed the 4th spot in the Rubicon International Business Case contest held in 2006, in Iserlohn, Germany. Incidentally, the team was the sole Asian finalist.[8]

Infrastructure

The XIMB Campus is a 20 acre lush green oasis in the midst of the upcoming IT and official hub of Bhubaneshwar. It is ensconced in serenity and rife with ultramodern facilities which provide the idyllic avenues for the country’s intellectual capital to learn, apply and grow.

  • Academic Block: XIMB has adequate academic infrastructure with four administrative and academic buildings. The Institute has state-of-the-art class room facilities. The new academic block also has a board room, a conference room and a new examination hall. The Infrastructure facilities are constantly upgraded to provide the most conducive atmosphere for learning and development. All the class rooms are air-conditioned and well equipped with audio-video systems, overhead projectors, computers and wireless hotspots.
  • Library: The three-storied library has a rich collection of printed as well as electronic resources which includes books, journals, working papers, audiovisual resources, dissertations, annual reports of corporate houses, volumes of periodicals, and international online databases on Management Development studies and related subjects.
  • Residence: With classes round-the-clock and a system of evaluation based on extensive group assignments and projects, the students are required to stay on campus. There are separate residences for men and women. All the rooms are Wi-Fi enabled and the hostels have laser printing and Xerox facilities. A recent addition is the Studio apartment building which provide one of the luxurious living facilities. It boasts of 113 fully furnished apartments meant for students, faculties and visiting professionals. The Institute also provides for round the clock power back facility, to ensure nothing gets in the way of students' access to campus resources.
  • Auditorium: The Institute has a hi – tech, air conditioned auditorium, which has a seating capacity of approximately 850 people.
  • Sports: "A healthy mind is in a healthy body." Keeping this in mind, XIMB provides excellent sports facilities to its students. There are two flood lit tennis courts and a basket ball court, an indoor badminton court, a volleyball court, a jogging track and facilities for indoor sports, which are availed and enjoyed by students and faculty as well. For the fitness freaks, the institute also houses a state of the art 24/7 multipurpose gymnasium.
  • Extension of campus: To be named Xavier’s University, the institution will start its first campus in Orissa’s Puri district, followed by two more campuses in Sambalpur and Balangir districts. The first campus in Pipli, Puri, will be spread across 35 acres whereas the Sambalpur and Balangir campuses will be built on 25 acres and 15 acres, respectively. Xavier’s University will offer both undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in areas such as environmental management, microfinance, healthcare management and disaster management.[13]

Campus Life

XIMB offers an extraordinary environment for its students. The diversity and rich mix of experience, background and culture, coupled with shared traits of talent and high aspiration, produces an inspirational vitality and enriches learning inside and outside the classroom. There are a number of student committees which look into every aspect of the institute and student life.[14]

Student Executive Council (SEC):
It is the students’ council consisting of students itself, which handles and controls all the student activities and various committees.

XIMB has four core committees —

Events

Xpressions
“Xpressions” is the annual festival organised by the student community of XIMB. A melting pot of the best of brains, talent, guts and attitudes it offers an idyllic blend of fun and frolic amidst a highly charged environment. This much awaited event is a refreshing change for students and offers them a platform to network with peers.

The five flagship events of Xpressions are intense business strategy games, each trickier than the previous:

  • Kurukshetra: Lead. Follow. Or get out of the way
  • Skill City: Home of the creatively spoilt
  • Gladiator: A hero will rise.
  • Helios: Enlighten
  • Spardha

Besides these, there are a host of business and cultural events for the participants to showcase their intelligence, creativity and talent.[16]

CELEBLITZ
A fitting finale for months of hard work, the celebrity night draws enormous crowds from in and around Bhubaneswar and media coverage. Xpressions 2011 saw Lucky Ali enthrall the audience with some of his best numbers. Channel V covered the entire event and did a feature presentation. This event has also seen the presence of internally acclaimed celebrities like Jagjit Singh, Euphoria and Jal.

BUSINESS CONCLAVE
This three day long interactive session organised by X – Fin (the Finance Club), MAXIM (The Marketing Association) and XOps (the Operations Team) is a national level event wherein distinguished guests from the industry are invited to share their views, experiences and ideas with the students. It works towards increasing the awareness, interest, and practical knowledge of the students.[17]

THE HR SUMMIT
XIMAHR, the HR association of XIMB organises an HR Summit to enlighten the students with today’s dynamic work environment regarding current HR issues and provide them with an opportunity to interact with senior HR professionals and industry leaders.[18]

Research Paper by Faculty

XIMB places high priority on research. Curriculum is research based and faculty is involved in high quality research in a number of areas. This reflects in the publications, cases, books and journals in the work of various research centers at the institute.[19]

Accreditation

XIMB has been granted the South Asian Quality Assurance Systems (SAQS) accreditation by the Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA).[20][21] XIMB has been awarded the NBA Accreditation by the National Board of Accreditation from March 2009, for a period of 5 years for PGDM, 3 years for PGDM-RM & 3 years for PGDM-PT.[22]

XIMB has applied for AACSB accreditation.[23]
