:These competitors are internet conglomerates of sorts, not pure search engines... they place other services, from webmail and news and integrated classic internet article content, to Web 2.0 stuff, social networks, dating sites, etc., far closer up in the foreground than Google. While Google might be known to Joe Average for 4 things - the search engine, googlemaps, gmail, and android (likely in that order) - and dominates the field across the board while flopping or never reaching mass audiences in dozens of other abortive or lingering endeavors, the RUnet is highly competitive, with each big company holding a variety of prime virtual real estate. Users are very likely to prefer Yandex for search and maps, recognize mail.ru as the definitive place to go for webmail and thereby get exposed to its photosharing or dating or online car sales services, but at the same time go to rambler for news or something. Most people end up with accounts with two or more of them, a daily social networking experience with VK, and a few sometimes-used legacy accounts in pre-integration services used by several of the conglomerates. The URL of one's "profile" on Ya.ru is also their openID URL.
