Recent changes

The school originally used the 4x4 block scheduling system, but as of the 2009 - 2010 school year, morning classes became year long and began to alternate every other day while afternoon classes remained only a semester long. During the 2010 - 2011 school year, its entire school district switched from a 6-week grading period to a 9-week grading period. These changes was made in response to an increasing number of Advanced Placement (AP) classes being taken at PMHS.

Athletics

Parry McCluer High has won five state titles in Virginia group A football (1977, 1979, 1983, 1986, 1987) and was state runner-up in 1991, under legendary coach the late Bobby Williams and has also been the state runner-up in group A basketball twice. The 2011 baseball team won the first Region C championship in school history, but was later eliminated in the state semifinal game.[2] Other group A state championships include boys cross-country (1980), golf (1980), and indoor track (1979–1980).[3] The football team will improve with time though.

Academic Team

In the 2010-2011 year, the Parry McCluer High School Academic Team was first place in their district and went on to become second in regions. They lost in the first round of states. The Blues starting line-up was made up by Co-Captains Josh Gardner and Jake Patterson, and by members Michael MacInnis and Olivia Williams. Other members of the team included William Stanley, Devon King, Kelly Kuang, Milea Webb, and Dylan Johnston. The Team was coached by Dr. Demaree Peck.

The Marching Blues

The Parry McCluer Marching band was formed by the local chapter of the American legion in 1941. It did not become an official school unit nor take on the name "Marching Blues" until 1947[4]. The band was very successful, especially in the 1960-1990 period, during which it won first place in marching for at least one Festival of States competition, as well as many other notable achievements. The band declined somewhat after the opening of rival Rockbridge County High School in 1992, and currently is about 35 students strong. A history of the band, as well as several documents, trophies, and photographs, were recently compiled by band alumnus Josh Gardner and can be seen in the high school band room. The band is currently under the direction of Mrs. Anna Duncan-Jarret[5].

Sam Armstrong

- Sam Armstrong is a major athlete at Parry McCluer. He runs cross country, plays basketball, and plays baseball. in his spare time Sam enjoys reading poetry and taking long walks on the beach. Most experts would agree that Sam is putting Parry McCluer on the map. - In 2009, Sam was the captain of the North Korean bobsledding team. The team did not do well because Koreans do not bobsled. Sam was kicked off the team and shipped back to the United States. - Sam was signed to AA affiliate of the Florida Marlins, the Carolina Mudcats in 2011. He is currently third string waterboy. - - Recently, Sam has been contributing to the scientific journal, Biology Monthly He writes articles about creatures of the ocean, such as the deep sea kangaroo sponge. He has recieved the Pulitzer Prize for his works. An anthology of his article is being put together, and is set to be released in early 2013. - - Armstrong's jazz-funk band, "Stretch and the Armstrongs," has been nominated for a grammy, they failed to win though. Sam plays the bongos and the djimbe in the band. - - To the great dismay of the community, Sam gave up his marching band career as a tuba player to play BM tron. Sam has showed great success playing the sport and is considering going proffessional. Because of his recent success, Sam has gained back the approval of the community, and has started several youth programs promoting the use of BM tron in schools.
