McLeod Russel began planting tea in India in 1869 and today is the largest tea producing company in the world. Part of the renowned Williamson Magor Group, the Company has forty-eight tea estates in the Assam Valley and five in the Dooars region of West Bengal, three factories in Vietnam, six estates in Uganda and the management control of the world renowned Gisovu estate in Rwanda, Africa.

The company is related to Williamson Magor & Company Ltd.. Company claims to produce more than 100 million kilograms of quality black tea every year.

History

The company was started in 1869 by two Calcutta-based Englishmen, Captain J.H. Williamson and Richard Boycott Magor, as a partnership firm, named Williamson Magor & Company. Company's main objective at that time was to service the requirements of tea estates in Assam. Brij Mohan Khaitan, who had been the principal supplier of Packaging Materials and Fertilizers, was invited to join the Board of Directors of the company in 1963 and in 1964 Mr. B. M. Khaitan eventually became the Managing Director of the company.

Over the next half century, the McLeod Russel group acquired a number of well-established and internationally recognised tea companies, including Williamson Tea Assam, Doom Dooma Tea Company, Moran Tea Company in India, Phu Ben Tea Company in Vietnam, Rwenzori Tea Investments and more recently in Rwanda the Pfunda Tea Company. Company's subsidiary Borelli Tea Holdings took over management control of internationally acclaimed Gisovu Tea Company Limited in 2011.

Operations

The company have some state of the art blending facilities in Nilpur in North-East India and in Dubai.
