Hi! I welcome comments, suggestions and complaints. Please use the + sign at the top of the page to add a new section.

Welcome!

WELCOME!! Hello, Riurik/Archive 1! I want to personally welcome you on behalf of the Wikipedia community. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. If you haven't already, you can put yourself in the new user log and the list of users so you can be properly introduced to everyone. Don't forget to be bold, and don't be afraid of hungry Wikipedians...there's a rule about not biting newcomers. Some other good links are the tutorial, how to edit a page, or if you're really stuck, see the help pages. Wikipedia is held up by Five Pillars...I recommend reading about them if you haven't already. Finally, it would be really helpful if you would sign your name on talk pages, so people can get back to you quickly. It's easy to do this by clicking the button (next to the one with the "W" crossed out) one from the end on the left. If that's confusing, or if you have any questions, feel free to drop me a at my talk page (by clicking the plus sign (+) next to the tab at the top that says "edit this page")...and again, welcome!--ViolinGirl 17:38, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

Ukrainian topics

Hi Riurik. Thanks for your several contributions related to Ukraine. Please have a look at Ukraine portal at Wikipedia where you can find several links of interest if you want to contribute to the Ukraine-related topics. Similarly, there is a sister Russia portal since many editors contribute to the topics of both countries. Especially useful for the editors, are the notice boards at both portals, one for new article announcements and the other for announcements on anything else. I announced the Prytula article you created already so that the active Ukrainian editors check it out and expand. It is useful to add the notice boards to your watchlist and announce the articles you will create there. Thanks again, --Irpen 21:11, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Football AID 16 April - 22 April

Thank you for participating in the Football AID vote this week.

Ukrainian Premier League has been selected as this week's collaboration. Please do help in working to improve it.

Ukrainian Village

You beat me to the punch! I was just about to create a disambig about that phrase. I hadn't realised there was a "Ukrainian Village" in Chicago until I read about in the Economist, when they did a special report on Chicago. I work at the "Ukrainian Village" museum in Alberta, Canada. Anyway, I went ahead and made a disambig for the phrase, and moved your page to ditto (Chicago). I hope you don't mind this. After all a real Ukrainian village is a village in Ukraine! Anyway it's nice to have someone else out there working on Ukrainian diaspora topics. I hope we can work together to improve these articles. Kevlar67 10:36, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the note back. I hope to work with you again soon. Kevlar67 07:19, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Great work

Hi Riurik, I just came by to thank you, this time, for keeping an eye and updating the UA-news portal window. No one was doing it for a while and it is great that you are taking care of it. Despite totally wierd and even depressing recent news, your prompt update of the portal was a great service to the whole community. I would have given you the batterfly ( ) but since you are not a newcomer, I feel that it would be almost embarassing. Please accept my thanks and stay around. --Irpen 01:23, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:BorysTarasyuk.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:BorysTarasyuk.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 18:05, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia image use

I slogged through some image use pages but I could not find anything that address the crediting of images as part of the caption. Can you direct me to the section you referred to when removing my name from the photo I took? If you would copy and paste the relevant section to my Talk page along with a link. That way I can use the Edit/Find feature to locate the string on the page. Thanks. Matt605 14:51, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Ukr-hist-stub

Congratulations with creating the new stub and a cat for it. Please be prepared to defend is as I failed a while ago. See here and the section below for more. Basically, we either have to gain more momentum of more users voicefully defending it or to quickly write 30 stubs, which is an easy but stupid IMO solution. Good luck. --Irpen 18:58, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Wow, so much drama over a stub? Thanks for the heads up, if it happens, it happens, if not, oh well.--Riurik 19:12, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
The "more users voicefully defending it" isn't a great solution either, as regardless of same, it's still undersized, and far from needed (as the parent stub type is very modest in size too). See the stub creation guidelines. I'd go ahead and propose it, and not worry about blanking it or requesting deletion just yet, though don't be surprised if it is deleted, as it's been speedied twice as a recreation already. Personally I think that such small stub types are ultimately counterproductive: if there are so few articles, it's a strong indication that it's not a particularly active area of editing, and separating them off into their own category makes it less likely they'll be found by people editing related areas. (Like Ukraine in general, or Eastern European history in general.) Alai 19:23, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Yet, that is what portals, such as portal:ukraine, are for - to help people find areas requiring attention. By aggregating all Ukraine history stub article, we will allow editors to easily find and expand these stubs because they all will be in one place. I also do not agree with your claim that "separating them off into their own category makes it 'less' likely they'll be found by people editing related areas." Categorizing will not take the stubs off the wikipedia search; editors will still be able to locate them just as likely, if not more. Think of any grocery store: in order to maximize sales, the products are grouped in categories and this in turn helps customers (editors in our case) find what they may be looking for.--Riurik 04:54, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

This was indeed such a silly fight! Basically, I was told that there are rules while my argument was along the WP:IAR lines. It seemed to me sensible, I acted in good faith and hence insisted for a while, but as per firm opposition I met, the spark was lost and I just let it go.

If the stub sorters will persist with demanding the cat to have no less than 60 entries, we could write the additional 30 or so stubs in no time. Say, any Cossack battle would qualify, etc. I thought that no article is better than

"XZZ was an YYY that took place in ZZZ between AAA and BBB."
Ukr-hist-stub
End of article

So, I gave up on that. You might end up being more succesfull in convinsing the stub-rulers, and I will be there to give you a hand. I just stopped by to explain that there was a reason why the link was red at the portal. Cheers, --Irpen 19:18, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

lol, sounds good.--Riurik 19:24, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

See above as well as the new entry at my talk. I think that the damage of not having a stub is smaller than having 30 empty articles. Our colleagues are strict and I remain pessimistic. --Irpen 19:31, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Since a reply in the second person is evidently out of the question, seemingly I'd best reply here. What's the alleged damage of not having this particular type? It's hardly as if it's "un-stub-taggable"; indeed, I recall vividly the several such articles had about three stub tags, as is going to be inevitable when historical events don't conform to the borders of modern states. Alai 19:43, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

I don't quite get the "out of question" remark, but the damage is clear. The article like Eternal Peace Treaty of 1686 and the article like Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine demand editors with very different sets of background and as such are better at different cats where repsective editors will look for them than lumped at generic ukr-stub. I said so before and I stand by this opinion. --Irpen 19:49, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Politics stub

Also, a Politics of UA stub seems like a good idea. Many articles would fit there. Just some food for thoughts. --Irpen 21:39, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm certainly open to the idea; the need is there (plus, the current events are bound to create more articles for this category).--Riurik 04:59, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

I, dima, hearby award you this raspberry medal for your wonderful contrubutions to Ukraine-related articles, particularly your recent Bendery Constitution article, which was featured on Wikipedia's Did you know...? section. Keep up the good work! —dima 23:19, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Joining the congratulations. And also, Riurik, please note that the raspberry-ribboned National Merit star is specifically minted to be awarded for the special contribution to the Ukrainian topics as the ribbon has a hisoric color of Zaporozhian Cossacks. Keep it up! --Irpen 20:55, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Raspberries taste good.--Riurik 18:02, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Not only that. Note that yellow and blue ribbon is reserved for the Hero of Ukraine wikiaward and we had to come up with an alternative. The Cossack historical color was the first thing that came to mind at the time. --Irpen 20:41, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging for Image:UA Sich Str Flag.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:UA Sich Str Flag.jpg. However, the copyright tag you've used is deprecated or obsolete, and should not be used. This could be because the tag is inaccurate or misleading, or because it does not adequately specify the copyright status of the image. For a list of copyright tags that are in current use, see the "Public domain", "Free license", and "Fair use" sections of Wikipedia:Image copyright tags.

Ukrainization

Although, as I explained at talk, I disagreed with the particular edit of yours, I welcome your help in the development of that article. I plan to develop it further and, hopefully, not just on my own. --Irpen 20:41, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Here is the data we were looking for. It is referenced to official data (see "Таблицы подготовлены сотрудниками Международного института гуманитарно-политических исследований на основании данных статистических сборников и бюллетеней Министерства науки и образования Украины, 2001-2004 гг." at the bottom). I will gradually work this into an article. Pehpas Zscout will later help us create grpaphs. I will welcome you further help with the article. --Irpen 03:05, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Sich Rifles

Sure, go ahead. I named the article after the common English translation of all strelets units commonly translated as, for instance, Rifle Divisions rather than Riflemen Divisions, but your title is just as good. //Halibutt 10:24, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Holodomor

Some non-responsive to communication user is waging an edit war at Holodomor. Pls take a look. I will get back to UA-zation later today. --Irpen 17:50, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

The same story repeated itself. This time multiple anon-IPs and single use acounts whose only edits are to this article continue to refuse to talk and stubbornly reinsert the cat. Please keep it under your watch.
I have a separate question, but I would rather ask it by email. Could you email me here? It is not connected to Wikipedia wars in any way. Thanks, --Irpen 06:27, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
You pose interesting questions, but I'm afraid no response will be forthcoming.--Riurik (discuss) 18:57, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Bahrianyi.gif. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

Kudos for creating the missing article. Would you mind moving it to Donetsk University in consistency with oither similar article. We had the discussion earlier on this here and ended up deciding on simplicity. Cheers, --Irpen 16:20, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Applying the same standards to all contributors of Wikipedia

Riurik,

I read your comment below: "Please stop adding inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did in Lviv. It is considered spamming, and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising. Thanks. --Riurik"

Please explain your recent deletion of my link on the Lviv article while leaving there the link to the "Tourist Information and Travel Guide" which offiers an even wider spectrum of commercial services compared to my website link which you have persistently deleted.

I ask for consistency and applying the same standards to all the users, in line with the general concept of the Internet community.

I would appreciate your comments very much.

Vladyslav

Vladyslav, I am sorry for what could have appeared as inconsistent application of standards. That was not my intention. At this time, I removed the above mentioned link and a couple of others. In doing so, I relied on guidelines as outlined here. I hope that you will continue editing on wikipedia. Also consider registering, which will allow you to track your contributions. Finally, if you have not visited it so far, you may be interested in Ukraine related portal. --Riurik (discuss) 20:13, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Thousands of fair use images at your disposal

Look what I found Большая Советская Энциклопедия. Thousands of 1970s images from the 3rd edition that can be uploaded under fair use for anything. Also right now I have the original 1950s 2nd edition of the encyclopedia in 50+ hardbacks with excellent PD images in them. Any requests?

Here is a taster, bottom of the articles Львов and Львовская Область --Kuban Cossack   13:43, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Great links, will start making use of them. Thanks for dropping this info. At the moment, no requests for pd images. Other projects on wikipedia and outside require quite a bit of attention. Best regards, --Riurik (discuss) 05:13, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
No prob, in the old one there are lots of images of sort of Stalinist buildings (which later Soviet press found distasteful) in every city, probably I counted at least 80 images of Stalin himself, including some on high quality colour inserts. Lots of maps, here is btw a pre-1945 map of Western Ukrainian Oblasts. [1] from this 1944 atlas [2]. Also lots of other stuff that I know of, including a 1939 atlas a 1940 atlas. Then I also have a home version of 1947 atlas and lots of other stuff. Also fell free to drop in on my Metro articles (I know you'll be intersted in Ukrainian ones) here User:Kuban kazak/Metro. Orange Revolution

I sourced the 1 mln est. a while ago to the USAID report (see further down in the article) when someone challenged it. Generally, the good style is to avoid refs within the lead. Ideally, the article is well referenced and lead summarizes the rest of the article and not the sources. Refs within the lead are usually a sign of an ongoinhg edit war when people add links to support their version. I still think we don't need the epithets. Election fraud is self-explanatory and factual. "Democratic" is your and mine opinion only. --Irpen 19:10, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for clarifying the 1mln comment. I don't think refs in the lead subtract from the value of the article, but it really is a non issue so long as the Supreme Court reference is in the main body.
Democratic is not my opinion or yours. See talk page for elaboration. --Riurik (discuss) 22:30, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Daria Werbowy information

Hi Riurik!!

I can scan the magazine and send to you, if you want...

Greetings from Brazil, Saulo Paiva 17:12, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Changing subjects, I want to travel to Ukraine in july, but the guy at embassy told me I need an invitation letter from an ukrainian citizen or travel agency. Actually, I am going to visit a friend who lives in Belgorod, Russia, near Kharkiv, and she says Ukraine is such a beautiful country and that I MUST spend some time there. Would you mind helping me with some information?

Saulo, to tell you the truth, I don't know much about this sort of stuff. I'm surprised that the invitation letter is still a requirement, which is unfortunate as it inhibits potential travelers like yourself. I really hope that this works out for you and you have a great time come this summer. Best, --Riurik (discuss) 06:29, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
This invitation letter requirement is so so jurassic and communist!! I found a email of a hotel in Kharkiv, but the man in charge of replying messages don't want to help me. He told me he can send me only a reservation confirmation, but it is not sufficient to the guy at the embassy, because "Ukraine needs to know what you are going to do there". I asked the guy at the hotel if he knows a travel agency, but he didn't replied me anymore. At a local travel agency here in Brazil, I got the following answer: "U-WHAT?". (Sorry for taking so long to reply) Saulo Paiva 01:47, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for Your invitation

Howdy, I believe we have already met in editing a few articles.

Actually I intentionally don't create an account as I don't have the time nor the inclination to get my self pulled into various political pissing contests provoked by a certain mafia of "editors" here whom I keep seeing pooping over all articles related to various countries which they believe to be their "canonical territory" and just sporadically contribute something to relatively low risk articles. Not a very noble stance I know, I should rather take a more active role and Eastern and Central European editors should together take wikipedia back from the trolls who pull wool over the eyes of western editors, but I simply don't have the necessary nerves to deal with that kind of people.

Never the less I greatly appreciate Your invitation and please don't let my lamenting other the current state of affairs discourage You in any way. --212.76.33.66 13:19, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Image:Oksana Baiul.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Oksana Baiul.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 12:53, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Polandukraineuefa2012.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Polandukraineuefa2012.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MER-C 04:18, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Weterani SS UPA Brzezany 2006.jpg, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Weterani SS UPA Brzezany 2006.jpg is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:Weterani SS UPA Brzezany 2006.jpg, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 21:12, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Duchnovich

Duchnovich never said that he was Ukrainian. He sayed he was Ruthenian/Rusyn (cf: "Ya rusyn Byw jesm i budu" I was, am and will be a Rusyn"). The fact that he didn't say that Rusyns were a separate nation is another problem. But saying that Dukhnovich is Ukrainian is an insult to the man that Rusyns believe to be their national hero.
