IP rant

edit

I am not interested in what you consider "constructive", I am interested in the truth.

The point of Bastiat's story was to OPPOSE not SUPPORT what you call a stimulus.

Fine, as long at it meets the guidelines - your edit didn't, so it was removed. It's quite simple, really. Osarius - Want a chat? 20:41, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Haven Edit

edit

The reason for the edit which I posted is because it is a current plot point which appears to have relevance to the character in question. It is a constructive point as it appears that the relationship between the two characters and their opposing troubles will play a significant role in the current season. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Warwolf1 (talkcontribs) 00:39, 20 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Longtail / rat

edit

You've recently undone an edit I made on Longtail/rat, which I edited to make it more in-line with the main "Anglo-Manx" article, which has a section on "Superstition and word replacement". Unfortunately, your rollback has now made the articles quite dissimilar - they should probably be merged.

I was of the opinion that the quote from Edward Faragher/Ned Beg Hom Ruy was important in establishing the context of the original sea-taboo that has changed in recent years to a modern superstition. Faragher's observations on sea-taboos are also quite important in illustrating that the original sea-taboo applied to a range of animals, something that no longer applies, and that the original name substitution (which took place in Manx Gaelic, before English became the prevalent language of the Isle of Man) was not solely to "longtail" - this is probably one of a very few documented sources that can be referred to that accurately documents the original sea-taboo, and this has now been lost from the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.246.200.119 (talk) 23:32, 21 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Per the above comment, this edit was a mistaken reversion of useful content. Regards. Mcewan (talk) 23:08, 23 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

This is not a newsletter

edit

This is just a tribute.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 11:14, 10 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ronald Speirs

edit

Hello I am new to Wikipedia and would like to completely rewrite and edit a page. The reason for the edit is because the current page is not particularly well written and lacks alot of information about the person which should be included. I have been doing research into this individual and all the information I have can be verified. I have also spoken to the person living son who has agreed to allow me to use some photo's he has of his father as the current photos are very grainy and of a poor quality. I would like to upgrade the content box on the page as well. I am still working on the article and am waiting for copies of military records from the States. Can you give me any advise? Or could you help? cheers Heather — Preceding unsigned comment added by H45blue (talkcontribs) 20:27, 22 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello Osarius

Thank you for getting back to me. The page in question is Ronald Speirs link is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Speirs

As I said previously, the article is very poorly written and lacks alot of information about him. There is also incorrect information on the page. I have been in contact with his English son who has agreed to allow me to rewrite and bring the entry up to a higher standard. If you look at my sandbox page I have uploaded the first couple of sections (introduction and early life). Pls be aware these are the first very rough drafts of this rewrite. I do not expect to the the article to be completed til end January/February at best and am waiting for some military records from the states. Out of respect to his son I have said I would send him a copy of the rewrite which he could read, edit and comment on before I upload into a public domain. I would like to honour this promise.

His son has also promised some high quality photos of his father. Am sure you will agree that the current ones are of a poor quality.

Still trying to figure out how to use wikipedia hope I have replied correctly!

Heather, thanks for the link. As I'm not an expert in this field, I would be out of my capacity to attempt to help you improve this page. I have also looked at the page history - it seems to be at least 7 years old; I would suggest leaving a note on the Talk:Ronald Speirs page describing what you have in mind and to gain some consensus for your edits. I can provide you with some advice that can help you to improve the page though: The first, and most important in your case, being verifiability. As I'm sure you are aware, Wikipedia absolutely must not contain any unsourced information about any living person. This policy doesn't generally apply to the deceased, but it is recommended that all information is properly and reliably sourced. Unfortunately, we cannot accept original research. You must also maintain a neutral point of view. You have stated that you have been in contact with Speirs's son - please do not use this to place bias into the article. I think this should be enough to get you started, but if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Osarius - Want a chat? 23:37, 23 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

some suggestions

edit

Hi Osarius, Thank you very much for contacting me. I am new in Wikipedia. I have a question for you. I am not an English native speaker (but I leave and teach in US). If I want: a) to edit a entry in English or b)to translate a Wikipedia entry from Italian to English There is any change to have the help of an editor native speaker? How Wikipedia deals with this issue of not native speakers editor and translation? I am asking for two reasons: -because I would like to translate some entries in English. -because I am thingking that in the future I could use Wikipedia for teaching language ( but I am still trying to figuring out how to implement Wikipedia in a Language class...) Thank you so much for your time! Mbegali (talk) 17:11, 27 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello, and thank you for your questions! All the answers to your questions can be found over at WP:Translation. There, you'll find information about how you can translate an article across languages or request an article to be translated for you. Here's a list of people who can help with translations. I hope this helps! Osarius - Want a chat? 18:44, 27 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your prompt replay. I am reading the link you sent to me: I thinks it could be a great opportunity both for me and my students. As soon as I will start editing I could need a chat if you are available. In order to have a chat have in Wikipedia, am I supposed to install this? http://www.wikichat.org/index.php/Install_WikiChat Or there is another sysytem already there? Thanks for your time! Mbegali (talk) 20:19, 27 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Excellent. I've not heard of that chat system before - the only official "live chat" function for Wikipedia is the IRC. I don't use either of those though, so the best way of contacting me is here on my talk page. Osarius - Want a chat? 23:19, 27 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Tried to clean up paraphrases and copying

edit

Note, I am new to editing in Wikipedia and would appreciate any assistance.

I have attempted to remove text from the article "Federal Systems Integration and Management Center (FEDSIM)" that may have been the cause of it being marked as having close paraphrases and/or copied-pasted text. (I have also added references and links to the page.)

According to my understanding of the edit history for that article, you are the individual that placed those marks on it. I would appreciate any advice or assistance that would help with the removal of the close paraphrasing and copied-pasted text warnings from the article. I don't want to just erase them myself unless the article is actually clean now.

Thanks in advance.

Jim McG 1951 (talk) 21:52, 14 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Me again. I would still like to figure out what else needs to be done to clean up the "Federal Systems Integration and Management Center (FEDSIM)" page that I have been working on for a couple of weeks now. I still don't know if it is clean in its current state or not. At this point, I am going to go in and delete the two tags. I expect that this will set off an alarm somewhere and hopefully result in substantive feedback about what remains to be done. I am not trying to just get rid of the tags, but to find out what needs to be done by way of cleaning such that the tags will not longer be appropriate. Hey Osarius :). I'm dropping you a note because you have signed up for the Notifications, or Echo, newsletter.

If all goes according to plan, we should be launching Echo on en-wiki either tomorrow, or next Tuesday - I'll drop a followup tomorrow when we know what's happening. Should the launch succeed, we'll begin the process of triaging bugs and gathering feedback on what features work, what cause problems, and what we should do next; I hope you'll help us out on these fronts by leaving any comments you might have on the talkpage.

The Smiler

edit

I was reverting it to what it was originally but made spelling mistake puting SNBO instead of SBNO: my last edit to fix that typo accidentally went over someone elses :S

Anyway
I agree with what was put there originally: SBNO. It cannot be put as testing as we have no reference to say that is being tested. Standing But Not Operational describes exactly what we know: its standing and it's not operating. And there are 3 or 4 references in the delayed opening section of the page which cite that information: that it is finished and not operational.

Rushton2010 (talk) 17:46, 30 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I would actually argue that the Delayed Opening section suggests that no-one know when the ride is to open, rather than it not operating. Merlin have a habit of testing at night - in fact they did this with The Smiler on many of it's test runs. No-one except Gerstlauer and some of the Park's management and staff would have been there, but it's common knowledge. Becasue the ride is still technically in Construction phase, SBNO is generally not used. If you want a reference for that, Rollercoaster Database has it covered. Osarius - Want a chat? 17:55, 30 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well I would argue saying the ride is "operational" insinuates the ride is open to the public. And "common knowledge" isn't going to pass wikipedia's rules on references and verifiable. Someone's changed it to "under construction", which is a fair compromise. Especially seeing as the ride will no doubt open at some point in the next few weeks and it will be superseded.
Rushton2010 (talk) 18:01, 30 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Under construction: Before opening, not operating
  • Testing: Before opening, operating (doesn't always mean trains will be going round though)
  • Operational: Open and operating
  • SBNO: Closed, or abandoned after some period of being Operational.
Hope that clarifies things. Osarius - Want a chat? 18:06, 30 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Actually, if you want a reference regarding testing, take a look at this: [1] Osarius - Want a chat? 18:16, 30 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Rowsley South (DDNGR) railway station

edit

A tag has been placed on Rowsley South (DDNGR) railway station, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

Two articles were made mistakenly for the same station on DDNGR. I am cleaning up.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Osarius - Want a chat? 09:37, 26 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Swiss Travel System, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page SBB (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

VAW-12

edit

There's an assertion of a copyright violation here, which I don't think applies. I've done what I think I need to do to contest it, but this has never come up before and I'm not sure I've taken all the steps to contest it. The article contains some stuff that was paraphrased from a U.S. Government source; the questioned phrases are hard-to-paraphrase statements of history, but I can change them if that is required. In any event, I did not consult the alleged source, and I DID reference the government source. The alleged source seems to have been copied from the government source; I did not consult it and therefore didn't reference it. Lou Sander (talk) 17:16, 2 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Photography of locations.

edit

Hello Sir, thank you for inviting me to the Tea house. I am glad to be a part of this team and wish to contribute to wikipedia with my photography. I have been living in Mumbai, India since the past 4 years and took photography as a hobby. Being a street photographer, it is not much difficult to candidly take pictures of people or places.

Coming to the point, I wish to add my pictures to stub articles of geographical locations of Mumbai. But some locations are at times inaccessible or have a restricted entry. Some areas require a ID proof to be shown but at times, the ID can't get one in a location. In times like this, does Wikipedia help with an identity? Can I carry a card which identifies me as a wikipedian and a contributor to Wikimedia Commons?

I can assure you that I have no personal motive behind taking pictures of restricted areas. These areas are at times strongholds of local goons but media or photojournalists are granted entry.

Thank you. Shreyas. Thebrowniris (talk) 15:01, 11 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

My latest contribution to Wikipedia (external links)

edit

≈Dear Osarius, thank you for the message.

I noticed that all the external links I put during last month were removed. I would like to kindly tell you that 'LifeMap Discovery database' is providing additional information about the relevant subjects in these links and we have been in dialog with WikiPedia about contributing content and imagery to expand upon developmental biology.

I would like to ask you what is the best method to approach this issue without being deleted in the future.

Thank you,

edit

Dear Osarius, I am contacting you again since I have not had a reply from you on this subject... In brief, we would like to contribute external links for wikipedia users from LifeMap Discovery to valuable information (non advertising) about many key subjects in developmental biology (such as organ/tissue development). Nevertheless, LifeMap people have been in dialog with WikiPedia about contributing content and imagery to expand upon developmental biology.

If such a contribution is problematic, I would like to kindly ask what is the best way we should approach it.

Regards,

Ariel Rinon — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arielrinon (talkcontribs) 21:03, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Change the name of the island Burke

Asking for change in information.

edit

This is about Goryeo dynasty, Joseon dynasty. Even there were 41 countries who had been vassal state of mongol empire, only Goryeo dynasty's front page includes that it was a vassal state. This is huge discrimination and except Goryeo dynasty, any other country's front page does never includes it. Writer of this page is known as Japanese and I think this is written like this in purpose. Joseon dynasty also is a fully independent country, if Joseon dynasty was vassal state of ming and ching, ecery eastasia countries and Russia, Japan should be it too. I think that changes should be made soon.
