No ping :-(
editHi, Cap'n. Pinging me in this post would have been a courtesy, and might also have had the benefit of pointing people interested in your post to mine, which made a specific point or two which yours did not. Or did you actually write it before noticing mine? Bishonen | tålk 19:06, 29 October 2024 (UTC).

Re:Arbcom/Serial Number 54129
editI don’t mean to sound like I’m tatting or anything, but this user’s recent comments at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case don’t seem to be in line with the principle of “This page is for statements, not discussion.” I’ve also provided a number of diffs there showing this user has problems with incivility and hounding and is unwilling to seriously listen to anyone they disagree with. Normally I’d take this to ANI but I don’t want to stir up more dramah which is clearly what they want to happen by baiting me like this. I’m not sure if you can/want to do anything about this but as an arbitrator I thought you might be able to help. Dronebogus (talk) 16:04, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the ping regarding your litany of assumptions. Your participation at the case request is wholly unuseful. I say nothing as to your other activities, which are only relevant to the request itself. SerialNumber54129 16:11, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Dronebogus@Serial Number 54129 Serial, it's really not a great look to get pulled to my page and to then just continue to attack Dronebogus. I understand your criticism at the Marine 69-71 page. While I've never liked Commons' status as a wank bank, and agree that some of Dronebogus's contributions there are questionable, he does have some useful NSFW images. But that's not the point. The point is to focus on the content, not the contributor. Just because an editor has made content X does not mean they are disqualified from having an opinion on Y. The deeper issue here Serial, as revealed by the various diffs listed on the ARC, is that you've been making a lot of spicy comments directed at other editors as of late. Are you doing okay? I know it's a stressful time in the world, so I want to make sure you're taking care of yourself. I've always valued your counsel and have always been eager to see your name on a page, so this feels out of sorts. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 16:43, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- OK. I apologize to Dronebogus and will not refer to him as pornographer-in-chief any more (joke). More seriously, Dronebogus, I promise not to mention your Commons work, except at Commons. This means I have to attack the Cap'n even more assiduously than usual. Prepare to repel boarders. I will resign immediately. SerialNumber54129 16:52, 5 November 2024 (UTC)

Re: The Asian News International vs. Wikimedia Foundation situation
editHi CaptainEek -- I'm concerned about your removal of the link to the The Asian News International vs. Wikimedia Foundation situation discussion on WP:CENT. Whilst I was generally aware of the ongoing problem, I had not realised that there was serious consideration of the Foundation disclosing IPs and e-mail addresses to the Indian court, and I am genuinely appalled at this idea. Could you reconsider, in the light of the fact that the disclosure appears imminent, and once done is irrevocable? Cheers, Espresso Addict (talk) 03:42, 6 November 2024 (UTC)

I recently invited you to take a survey about administration on Wikipedia. If you haven’t yet had a chance, there is still time to participate– we’d truly appreciate your feedback. The survey is anonymous and should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement.

editWhat is the actual criterion for "very clear consensus"? It's not unanimity, I assume. Could you provide numbers without violating any secret stuff? Not necessarily the numbers for the Bish vote, which I can see could be considered none of my business. But just, in general, how many no votes would it take to veto a choice? I'd ask at WT:ACN, except I sort of think that discussion may have nearly run its course. But if you think this is better answered there, that's fine with me. Floquenbeam (talk) 16:48, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Floquenbeam Can you clarify the broader sentence you're referring to? I wanna make sure we're on the same page about what part of the process. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 17:05, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- The one Kusma found at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Conflict of interest reports#Appointments: "The Committee carefully vets all applications with feedback from the functionaries team; very clear consensus from the Committee is needed for a candidate to be presented for consideration to the Community." Floquenbeam (talk) 17:28, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- Although it doesn't say it, i assume the same "very clear consensus" is needed at the actual final vote, too.... Floquenbeam (talk) 17:29, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Floquenbeam thank you, always good to have the citation just in case :) So the way we went about that this time was that we took a strawpoll among the Committee, to see if there were any candidates who obviously weren't going to pass the 70% threshold required at the end for ultimate appointment. We then advanced with the candidates who remained. As I elaborated at ACN, we apparently need to improve how that process works. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 17:51, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. That 70% threshold is what I was probably really after, I just didn't know enough to ask the right question. Perhaps it says it somewhere and I didn't notice. Also, I know I'm probably preaching to the choir, but: I agree the process could use some work (priority #1: tell candidates who don't pass why, right off the bat, don't make them ask), but my main ... annoyance, I suppose, is a good word? ... is that whoever voted "no" was just so obviously wrong this time. It increases my concern that when they're voting on people I don't know much about, they're making similar mistakes. Floquenbeam (talk) 18:03, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Floquenbeam I think we're very much on the same page there. With regards to 70%, I don't believe that number is explicitly on-wiki, but we did establish that the COIVRT queue needed a functionary-like appointment process, and the funcs need a supermajority (70%) to be appointed. Ergo, 70% for COIVRT, because it's handling NDA material. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 18:07, 14 November 2024 (UTC)

editThank you for standing for arbitrator. I am far away from it all (travel, mourning), not in the mood, so just an informal question you can answer or ignore:
- Liviu Holender chose lieder by five composers whose music was banned by the Nazis—Schreker, Zemlinsky, Mahler, Korngold and Schönberg—for a recital at the Oper Frankfurt.
What does this 2024 DYK tell you about infoboxes for classical composers in 2024? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:19, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt Hi Gerda, sorry to hear about rough times for you; I hope the sun shines again on you soon. As to your question, we've talked about infoboxes before. I still stand by my 2022 response about the infobox wars. The interesting thing I note from that DYK is that all of the articles have an infobox, except for Mahler's, but Mahler is the only FA. Of course, Mahler is a 2010 vintage FA, from an era before the ubiquity of infoboxes. What does that tell me? I guess from this small sampling, it might be evidence that infoboxes have won the war on infoboxes. Much as drugs seem to have won the war on drugs, or poverty has won the war on poverty.... CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 01:12, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Perhaps turn your attention to the talk pages, and tell me if you believe that the topic should still be treated as "contentious". (I asked in 2018, that's right.) -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 01:24, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt Thank you for the direction :) Most of the articles don't have an issue. But I do admit some surprise at seeing just how recent and voluminous the infobox argument on Mahler's page is. However, from this small sampling, I'm not sure I could say authoritatively that infoboxes remain a problem. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 01:36, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- You might try the strength of arguments, how is that? I wanted to keep it simple, but if you don't see enough for Mahler try Mozart. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:14, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
