- In 2021, the enrollment was around 100.[7] Most of the students were Cajun and Native American, and these students came from French-speaking households.[8] The board of trustees agreed to close the school in 2021.[9] Six board members voted to close the school while three voted against it.[10] Area parents held protests as the board held its closure vote,[11] then sued the district in federal court to attempt to stop the closure.[12] Students were re-assigned to Montegut Elementary School.[7] The Pointe-aux-Chenes school closed, and Hurricane Ida caused damage to the facility.[13] The lawsuit prompted members of the Louisiana Legislature to consider authorizing a French immersion school. École Pointe-au-Chien.[8] The Louisiana House of Representatives approved that proposal,[14] as did John Bel Edwards, then Governor of Louisiana. The new charter school opened in 2023.[8] It had plans to relocate to the former Pointe-Aux-Chenes building.[13] The plans were realized after the district sold the school building for one dollar to the Pointe-au-Chien Tribe.[8]
