WP:INDIA Banner/Andaman and Nicobar Islands workgroup Addition

edit

Note: {{WP India}} Project Banner with Andaman and Nicobar Islands workgroup parameters was added to this article talk page because the article falls under Category:Andaman and Nicobar Islands or its subcategories. Should you feel this addition is inappropriate , please undo my changes and update/remove the relavent categories to the article -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 05:45, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cannibalism

edit

The Andaman Islands Expedition citation for the Victoria Cross (see the expedition article) mentions that the Onge were cannibals. Is there any truth to this, or was it just British colonial superstition? --Mûĸĸâĸûĸâĸû (blah?) 08:48, 13 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Population decline due to eating?

edit

The article claims "A major cause of the decline in Onge population is the changes in their food habits brought about by their contact with the outside world.[3]" Although this may be supported by the referenced 1987 dissertation, it seems improbable. Without some explanation of exactly how changes in diet led to a significant population decline, I think this should be removed. Furthermore, at the end of the article, it argues that sterility is common among these people, and infant mortality is high -- both conditions which would be clearly and directly related to population decline.

In some cases, I would remove the sentence, but here it is supported by a reference and may contain content of some value. It may, however, be no more than an expression of a common bias against civilization encroaching on primitive peoples.

Native South Asian populations

edit

@212.241.98.39: my problem is with this line:

A genetic research by Narasimhan et al. (2018) concluded that the native South Asian populations are not closely related to any group outside of the Indian subcontinent and thus not related to the Onge people of the Andamanese islands.

What is "native South Asian," if not the Onge? At second reading, your edits seem to be okay. It's just that there's so much India-related pov-pushing; anything giving the impression of nonsense is not easily being given the 'benefit of doubt', in this area.
