The name comes from Coptic: Ϣⲉⲛⲟⲩϯ (Šenoude / Šinouti ) and is a composite of the Egyptian words: še (ϣⲉ "son"), en- (ⲉⲛ "of") and Noude / Nouti (Ⲛⲟⲩϯ "God"), thus meaning the son of God.
