Image upload broken?

[edit]

In the last couple of days, I've tried repeatedly to upload (to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload) a couple of plain-vanilla JPEG images. No joy on either -- the current one returns a message that '.' is not an accepted image format. Yes, it says '.' Help?

Pete Tillman 19:47, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In case anyone wants to try to duplicate this, try uploading this image (fair use of a book cover): http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/images/n28/n143506.jpg Title it "Telzey & Crest Cats", in case it works... <g> Pete Tillman 20:14, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Arizona Wilderness Areas

[edit]

What a nice clean up of List of Arizona Wilderness Areas. (It wasn't easy putting some of the Arizona articles together). plus i've done some stuff in the Lower Colorado River Valley. Too bad I don't have weeks and months to actually Explore, and Climb, and Bird Watch, And Golf Course up and down the Lower Colorado River Valley ! (and all the money required). I just looked at the Pinaleno Mountains page. Wow, what a job done on that page. Second topic(after looking at your page). I just created: Category:Historical people of U.S. natural history, and only attempted to put people there in one Effort. I added one person since, and it was related to Agassiz, Lake Agassiz, but the geologist Dana, came up whose book I always kept close by: the 17, 18, or 19 edition. You know of what I speak, and why I found his name in the 1800's. Any geology, or other types that are historical enuff, even in the past 30 years to go into this category? I put the Alvarez's in it because of the K-T layer. talk-to-you-later... --Mmcannis 13:00, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just a quick second note. You sent a message to my User: Page: "User:Mmcannis". The message should have been sent to: User_talk: (the Discussion Page). --Mmcannis 23:05, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Move request

[edit]

Hi. I noticed you posted a move request at WP:RM, regarding Village of Oak Creek, Arizona. Unfortunately, due to a bad link on the requests page, your request was actually posted to an invisible sub-page. I've gone ahead and completed the move, since it seems to be an uncontroversial one, simply making the article consistent with other US cities.

I'm letting you know, because I deleted the subpage on which your request was posted, so that edit is now gone from your contribution history, which might seem strange if you were to look for it there. Cheers. -GTBacchus(talk) 03:45, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm sorry that I didn't reply to you sooner -- it's just one of those things that gets overlooked for a moment, then gets completely forgotten about! I'm sorry you moved out of Tucson before I knew you were here. Hope you're doing well elsewhere. Right now it's been COLD for the last month or so! A couple of real freezes, although not much snow in the mountains.... Best for the New Year! Hayford Peirce 18:09, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Howel Williams

[edit]

Glad to be of service :-) Good to meet another wiki geologist, and one who rubbed shoulders with one of the classics. I never met Williams, but sure became well aquainted with his Petrography text back about 1970 - still have my old copy. Cheers, Vsmith 03:50, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have anything on his personal life, let alone his genealogy. It's weird how no one seems to ask scientists about their personal lives, while we have more information than we would ever want on Movie Stars. BTW, I have made a project of making articles for everyone that has won a [[Logan Medal]. That's why I've added several famous geologists to your list. Clerks 20:02, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted those links because their captions made me see them as unneeded, since Wikipedia isn't a link directory. I don't normally remove the newspaper link; I don't know why I did this time. More places in Arizona

[edit]

Thanks for the note! I only ended up putting one of those on the county template, however, for the following reasons:

  • Cherry I put on the template.
  • Clemenceau I did not put on the template because it's part of an incorporated municipality. If all parts of incorporated municipalities were put on, some county templates would be huge, because some cities (not necessarily in Arizona) have many articles for their many neighborhoods.
  • The other three towns I did not put on the template because they're redirects to other pages. If you create separate pages for them, I'll put the template on.

By the way, as far as Cherry: place articles generally do not have ", Arizona" in the "bold intro"; if you look at town articles nationwide you'll generally see "TOWNNAME is a [whatever type of municipality] in COUNTYNAME County, STATENAME, United States."
Thanks again! Nyttend 14:37, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, no problem. I'll be in Prescott for the next couple weeks, so will hopefully have the chance to add some more photos to Arizona articles. Let me know if there's any that can be done easily from here that aren't listed in the Category of needed photos for Arizona. Cheers! Murderbike 17:16, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cool! If you'll check Mingus Mountain, you'll see I stuck one in there yesterday as well. As to those other places, I'll def see what I can do. Thanks for the tips! Murderbike 17:42, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, went down to the Bradshaw Mountains today, got some photos. I through a few in that article, as well as Lynx Lake, and Goldwater lake (which could use a lot more info, I had to take out a bunch that belonged in a tourist guide). The only thing I could find in Walker worth photographing was the charcoal kiln, which I also put in the BM article. From the peak of Mount Union, I got one of Granite Mountain, I'll see if I can crop it to make it worth using. I was actually thinking of trying to do the Granite Mountain article this week, we'll see how it goes. We didn't get to the other side of 69 though, so nothing for Humboldt and all that. Maybe next time. Cheers! Murderbike 05:24, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In your admirable quest to detect and destroy un-sourced info you also deleted some purely factual material (regarding a historic event in this town) from the section entitled "Recent Events" -- also, you called the material that you deleted POV, when in reality it was material without proper sources -- there's a difference, although you were probably right to delete some of what you deleted. As for the other part, I've restored it. In the future please try and be more careful. Pablosecca 15:22, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ghost towns

[edit]

Hmm, sorry for the delay in response. I thought I posted those instructions, I will try to figure out what's up, in the meantime, if you have something that needs assessed I can take a look if you want. IvoShandor 00:17, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is a quality scale here: [2], but it doesn't really provide instructions and is pretty vague, when I created the project I proposed it and someone took it live when there was only a couple members so I didn't really have anyone else around to get input from on this. It seems there are quite a few members now, I would like to see the project revived. Perhaps a newsletter on a monthly basis would attract people to some discussion. We still really really need to figure out a way to define ghost town for categorization, this has been a semi-contentious issue in the past, I would like to see a consensus evolve. Maybe I will work on a newsletter. IvoShandor 00:22, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

State geological article requests

[edit]

Hi. I honestly expected wikipedia to have full detailed articles on Geology by state e.g Geology of California or Geology of Utah. I'm not even from the States but I had fully expected a detailed article on each state. Some of the American geological articles are very poor or non existent see Basic geologic features of each state. PLease could your project aim to start these articles and develop them. 5RR - and gaming the system.

[edit]

(copied to your user talk - so that i'm sure you'll notice it).

Would you please read/reread Help:Reverting, particularly section 1.2. For example:

  • Do not simply revert changes that are made as part of a dispute. Be respectful to other editors, their contributions and their points of view.
  • Do not revert good faith edits. In other words, try to consider the editor "on the other end." If what one is attempting is a positive contribution to Wikipedia, a revert of those contributions is inappropriate unless, and only unless, you as an editor possess firm, substantive, and objective proof to the contrary. Mere disagreement is not such proof. See also Wikipedia:Assume good faith.

Your wholesale reversions of my edits, such as at James Hansen, clearly violate Wikipedia policy. Pete Tillman (talk) 01:26, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kim, can you read plain English? "Do not revert good faith edits... Mere disagreement is not such proof."
You're getting a bad reputation for this sort of thing. Please desist, and observe Wikipedia policy. Pete Tillman (talk) 17:58, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Pete - please take a long hard look at WP:BLP - your quote without a context is not adhering to a neutral point of view. It is a cherry picked quote, which when examining both the discussion articles about it, and the original source, is incomplete and doesn't represent Hansen's views. (i'm referring to Carbon Capture and Storage).
And i can assure you that i try my very hardest to stay within WP rules and guidelines - but since i mostly edit on a controversial subject, a perusal of my talk page will give a scewed view. I'm not assuming any bad faith - and i request that you do not either. --Kim D. Petersen (talk) 18:23, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on James Hansen. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions in a content dispute within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Please do not repeatedly revert edits, but use the talk page to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. If necessary, pursue dispute resolution. Pete Tillman (talk) 18:47, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Had you pointed that out - i would have self-reverted, and i'm deeply sorry. But may I suggest that you yourself take a look at WP:3RR - since you violated it before i did? --Kim D. Petersen (talk) 18:51, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In effect you are gaming the system. In fact you are now standing at 5RR . [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] - i suggest that you rerevert back to the last version before 3RR violations --Kim D. Petersen (talk) 18:55, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I also strongly suggest that you read WP:3RR thoroughly, since BLP violations is excerpt from the rule:
There are other instances where multiple reverts may not constitute a breach of this policy:
  • reverts performed by a user within his or her own user page, user subpages, provided that such reverts do not restore copyright violations, libelous material, WP:BLP violations, or other kinds of inappropriate content enumerated in this policy or elsewhere;
--Kim D. Petersen (talk) 19:00, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Kim, with all due respect, you are making it very hard for me to assume good faith for your actions. You have now reverted my contribution NINE times. Not once have you made an edit. Would you agree that this is excessive? Pete Tillman (talk) 19:12, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In the face of WP:BLP violations - No.
The rule for BLP NPOV is very simple - we must err on the side of caution. Which is what i've done. The good faith part goes both ways, and frankly i have at no time during this dispute considered your part as being with bad faith. I'm simply not that interested in that particular quote - so if you want it on the article, then you must ensure that it is written in a way so that it is not inflammatory and provides even an implicit POV. Try to address this instead of assuming bad faith. --Kim D. Petersen (talk) 19:42, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kim, the "BLP violations" exist (sfaict) solely in your own fevered imagination. So far, neutral third parties agree. Why don't you try doing something constructive? Pete Tillman (talk) 22:23, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry? Am i going to have to ignore this, and just assume that "fevered imagination" is somehow civil and assuming good faith? Or is it what i think it is... a personal attack? --Kim D. Petersen (talk) 00:16, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there. I removed the “unbalanced” tag you recently placed in Freeport-McMoRan as you have provided no rational on the talk page. Such tags should not be there if the issue is not discussed on talk – in fact, using talk without tags is a much more satisfactory and possibly less disruptive approach.

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:AZGS logo.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:AZGS logo.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 04:08, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:One Man's West.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:One Man's West.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. A tag has been placed on Image:Samoan American drummer.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only," "non-derivative use" or "used with permission," it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. [9], and it was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19, or is not used in any articles. If you agree with the deletion, there is no need to do anything. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:

  • state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
  • add the relevant copyright tag.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Samoan American drummer.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
