I started the draft

[edit]

I made the draft for resident evil media list. you wont have to tackle this alone.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 15:14, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think the resident evil video game list be split up into that many spin-offs? The list will be mostly divided up into tables made up of two games. the only one with three is Survivor series. IMHO I think its a good idea to keep them all the spin offs together. I do think the remakes should be split apart though.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 13:25, 15 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Blue Pumpkin Pie: I could go either way. We can try your method first. TarkusABtalk 18:36, 15 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I'm currently looking at List of Final Fantasy media for guidance. thank you for helping me out.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 18:43, 15 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I just wanted to inform you that I undid your image removal on this article because I disagree with your assessment of "excessive" use. Multiple GAs which I used as a template for this article use two or three screenshots without problems (e.g. Age of Empires (video game), Age of Empires III). That said, I'm happy to hear why you believe different or why you think there is not enough rationale and I'll gladly try to address these problems. Regards SoWhy 16:58, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@SoWhy: Hey there, thanks for the message. Well you saw my thoughts on the Spellforce talk page. Both those Age of Empires articles were promoted a decade ago and I think the VG project's standards have improved since then. I've shared my concerns and still stand by them, especially for the character creation image. I've said my piece so I will stand aside and let's see if others chime in so we can gather a greater consensus and move forward from there. TarkusABtalk 17:16, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sakura Wars scan

[edit]

You left a message some time ago about a source for Sakura Wars 4: Fall in Love, Maidens. If you could give me a link to those scans, it would be good. I'm starting a drive to get all four remaining Sakura Wars game articles to GA status (already got the fifth game to GA and all besides Fall in Love, Maidens are at GAN right now). --ProtoDrake (talk) 20:44, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@ProtoDrake: No problem my dude. Scanned them for you here and the ISBN is 0060567724 TarkusABtalk 00:10, 15 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks. I was able to expand the article, in addition to finishing up its reception section. Now I've four Sakura Wars GANs on my plate. At least I got So Long, My Love out the way early. --ProtoDrake (talk) 11:14, 15 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Knuckles' Chaotix scheduled for TFA

[edit]

This is to let you know that the Knuckles' Chaotix article has been scheduled as today's featured article for April 20, 2018. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 20, 2018, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1100 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. Thank you again for List of Resident Evil media. You really helped me out. I didn't think we would finish it so fast.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 17:51, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

need help?

[edit]

Is there anything you need help on? trying to get my feet wet and seeing what would be a good starting point. i tried comics and I'm not so good at that either.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 22:44, 29 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Blue Pumpkin Pie: No, nothing I need help on. I recommend you find a topic you enjoy and edit articles about that. There are many different ways you can contribute to Wikipedia. Some editors just fight vandalism, others are more involved in discussions, others just upload and handle images, others fix typos and template formats, others write good articles like me. There are many ways you can contribute, just find something you enjoy doing. We're all volunteers doing this on our free time, without pay.
Is there a specific page or topic you want to improve? I can guide you on what you need to get started. If you want to edit articles about video games, familiarize yourself high level with the Manual of Style for video games. You can also check the WP:VG backlog for articles that need work. nice work on the rieko kodama article

@TheJoebro64: Sure. I don't know much about comics but maybe that makes me a good copy editor in this case. TarkusABtalk 20:09, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for correcting my mistake!

[edit]

Hello TarkusAB,

Thanks for correcting my mistake on the Role-playing video game article. I meant to revert the change where RPVG was added - but didn't realize there was an intermediate editor after that change (so I didn't revert the actual change). Apologies for not getting it in the first place. Caidh (talk) 22:17, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The History of Sonic the Hedgehog

[edit]

Does this book say anything about Sonic Gems Collection? An FAC reviewer asked if it was so I wanted to double-check with you. JOEBRO64 19:45, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@TheJoebro64: I checked aaand nothing. The book does not cover the compilations. It is mentioned briefly as a side note on a couple pages like for Fighters and the like, but nothing new here. TarkusABtalk 22:38, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Lumines series collaboration?

[edit]

I've been working hard on trying to find sources to make the Draft:Lumines (series) into a full-fledged article. There are a few sources that cover it as a series here and there, so hopefully it'll work out. I'm very happy that the new updated website confirms what's considered a separate entry in the series. At the moment, I'm just working on making the current articles upto B-class (or even GA, if I actually dedicate myself to it) I added a bunch of Japanese sources in Lumines: Puzzle Fusion, Lumines II and also working on finding Japanese sources for Lumines: Electronic Symphony. I don't understand Japanese obviously, I remember you said you can read it. Do you want to collaborate together on these articles?Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 22:24, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Blue Pumpkin Pie: I'll be honest, I don't have the interest in Lumines nor the time or desire to pull away from other projects I'm working on, so I'll regretfully have to decline your request. Now if you need me to help translate some passages, I can help, but it takes a lot of time because I am not fluent. I use Google Translate myself and only check closely if something isn't translating correctly. I recommend you do the same, and if something just isn't looking right, you can ask me to double check. I'm glad you've stuck with editing Wikipedia, there is so much work to be done. TarkusABtalk 22:57, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a little slow at the translation myself. I am trying to use Google translate, some stuff looks super funky though. Its ok. Thanks for the encouragement. The good news is that there is also a lot of English sources too.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 23:03, 23 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sonic Jam release dates

[edit]

Please explain why the Sonic Jam release dates are not reliable enough for Chaotix; there has been no discussion to my knowledge, and frankly, a Sega product should obviously be a more reliable source than (unreferenced) fan-sites that came into existence much later. Metalsonic89 (talk) 22:05, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Metalsonic89: The discussion occurred HERE on the talk page for SegaSonic the Hedgehog. Although Sonic Jam says there were North American and European releases of that game, there is no journalistic coverage or concrete evidence (such as an english flyer or ROM) to suggest such a release. Furthermore, the Chaotix dates do not match up with the dates provided by contemporary magazine coverage. The magazine reviews give release dates of April 1995 for North America and June 1995 for Europe. These contradictions have lead us to give less weight to Sonic Jam release dates. TarkusABtalk 22:48, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In regards to the answer the question about the flyer, it's actually in both Japanese and English (even localizing Eggman to Robotnik) and additionally credits Sega's Europe and U.S.A. branches, and while I'm not aware of a print source specifically stating the International September release, the CVG and Mean Machines magazines refer to the rumor of porting the "Sonic arcade game" / "Sonic the Hedgehog coin-op" to the 32X. The casual tone suggests readers should have familiarity with said game, and no known contemporary reviews mention anything about it being Japan-only. As for why the game itself is in Japanese, perhaps it was deemed minimalistic enough that translation costs were skipped, and suggesting no English-language ROM is evidence of no release in English-speaking territories does not account for ALL the cases of English-language games released only in Japan. All in all, nothing there directly supports the claim that it is a Japan-only release, and thus a limited worldwide release is more likely than not. As for Knuckles' Chaotix, there is still no valid source for that supposed "April 20" North American release date. Keep in mind that many gaming sites rely on user-submitted data, and absolutely none of them are obligated to properly cite themselves. My guess is that the game may have really been released around March 31 or April 1, which would account for the March/April discrepancy. Either way, we do not have an exact day going off that magazine or Sonic Jam. Metalsonic89 (talk) 14:41, 5 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

In regards to the answer the question about the flyer, it's actually in both Japanese and English...

Well remember the game was shown at trade shows internationally. Perhaps this was to aid with presenting the game there. However, the flyer is still overwhelmingly in Japanese. If the game received a proper release in English territories, they would have produced a new flyer without all the Japanese writing. I've never seen any English flyer with Japanese like that before. Also, it's worth mentioning that sometimes the Japanese use English as a stylistic choice. It was actually used on some Sonic MD covers.

The casual tone suggests readers should have familiarity with said game, and no known contemporary reviews mention anything about it being Japan-only.

We don't need a source saying something was not, we need a source saying it was. The sources that suggest an international release are just dates on a table, no editorials, reviews, or in-depth coverage one would expect for an arcade release starring the most popular game character at the time.

As for why the game itself is in Japanese, perhaps the game was deemed minimalistic enough that translation costs were skipped

If Sega was releasing an arcade game internationally of their flagship mascot, I believe it much more likely they would have spent the extra minimal cost to translate the flyer and game.

and suggesting no English-language ROM is evidence of no release in English-speaking territories does not account for ALL the cases of English-language games released only in Japan.

Unrelated. The reasons why English developers less commonly translated games for the Japanese market is a completely separate topic.

All in all, there is nothing directly supporting the claim that it is a Japan-only release there, and thus a limited worldwide release is more likely than not.

This is the crux of our disagreement. You're saying we need evidence to prove something didn't happen, I'm saying you need evidence to prove it happened. We know the game was without a doubt released in Japan. While there are some sources that suggest the game was released internationally, there is a clear lack of evidence one would expect for an official western release of an arcade game starring a character more popular than Mario and Jesus.

I think we can come to an agreement here. The gaming sites we typically source for release dates explicitly do not rely on user-submitted data. You are thinking of sites like Moby Games and GameFAQs, which are against policy. GameSpot's database is shared with GameFAQ. I checked the page and sure enough that's where the April 20 is cited from. So for Chaotix I would agree that unless a more reliable source can be found for the April 20 date, it should be changed to April 1995, sourced to GameFan. I still think this is more reliable than Jam.
I am pinging @TheJoebro64: and @Red Phoenix: who are well versed in Sega and Sonic history to see if they have any opinions. TarkusABtalk 16:18, 5 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm on Tarkus's side that we should be using the release dates provided by contemporary (and reliable) magazines/sources rather than Sonic Jam's. There's no concrete evidence SegaSonic was released worldwide—contemporary magazines just covered it at shows. If my understanding is correct, none of the other SegaSonic games were ever released outside of Japan as well. The Knuckles' Chaotix release dates are most likely just incorrect. As I've read nearly every source about the game, I never saw the March 1995 release date mentioned by reliable sources, just the April one. My best guess for these contradictions (this is original research here) is that, comparing the Sonic Jam release dates and the magazine cover dates, the Sonic Jam release dates might be referring to when early-access copies for magazines/reviewers were provided (I might be 100% wrong but that's just my guess). Red might be better than me at this, because my knowledge in Sega really only lies in Sonic (just like how my knowledge in comics lies only in DC). JOEBRO64 19:34, 5 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The core of Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth. I'm going to tell you I have doubts about both methods. As it comes to Sonic Jam's listing, I have concerns that this may have been an anticipated release date possibly before a delay, especially since I found a GameFan preview that does say "Available March". (I have found others for the US that also say "Available April", which could explain our confusion.). We prefer to go with secondary sources rather than primary ones, and it wouldn't be the first time I've seen a primary source be wrong. Going with retrospective sources, I'm going to advise to be careful of "citogenesis", which I've seen before and it really runs rampant in video game retrospectives. What that term means is that, because we said it at some point (sourced or not), a game journalist wanted to fact-check it really quick and was pressed for time, checked Wikipedia, and went with that. I think that's also how we explain Sega-AM8 supposedly being the name of Sonic Team, and the truth is it's all perpetuated OR that has now become cited fact. So, my suggestion here would be to search for more sources, try to incorporate some from the period it was released (believe me, there are plenty full-prints on the internet of them that I never dreamed would have existed "nudge toward SonicRetro") and work on what's the most verifiable answer from there. Red Phoenix talk 02:19, 6 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

By "limited worldwide release", I meant that the Sonic Jam release date was likely referring to the approximate time window of the game's known overseas location testing, but I understand that may not be considered a real release by most measures. The flyer contains a basic translation of all the pertinent information, so it was likely for said trade shows, and character popularity doesn't necessarily mean that the series' early history is properly documented (for example, we still don't have a specific release date for Sonic Eraser, or if it predated Sonic The Hedgehog like Rad Mobile). Basically, I'm trying to explain why Sonic Jam concluded the way it did rather than dismiss it altogether, but I do concede that it would not be usable on its own. That aside, are we all in agreement to move the North American Knuckles' Chaotix release date of April 20, 1994, to April 1994, at least in the meantime until a more reliable source surfaces? Metalsonic89 (talk) 13:35, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

1995, but yes. And who knows who at Sega put the museum together. It could have been some intern that was given some old papers to dig through, or maybe he had to walk around the office and ask when each game came out and people gave him wrong information. Perhaps it was scheduled for a international release but was never finalized. We don't know and may never know. Secondary sources at the time are definitely more reliable in this case. TarkusABtalk 15:13, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Great work

[edit]
Obscure Games
Thanks for your great work on Lucienne's Quest! I love to see some time put into coverage of the more obscure games out there. It's a shame 3DO cover art is in a format ill-suited for infoboxes though..... :p Ben · Salvidrim!  19:38, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not 100% sure but I think that's why I had opted for the squarer Saturn cover art? Anyways I have the same issues with ESPN NBA Hangtime '95 but there's no alternative there so we just have to live with poorly sized cover arts in infoboxes :p Ben · Salvidrim!  19:40, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Salvidrim!: Thanks! I love the obscure games. I found this game interesting because it's the only JRPG for the 3DO. I'm going to try and take it to GA soon, just needs the gameplay written up. As for the picture, I see what you mean. I think the NA cover is better because the name on the cover matches the name of the article. I don't think the image formatting is too bad. Most Sega CD/Saturn games have the same problem, although 3DO cases seem even more narrow. If we could acquire a scan of the actual CD case inside the box, that might format better, but the game costs like $500 so I don't think we will. TarkusABtalk 02:11, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed :p the game's name caught my eye for a reason that's pretty hard to translate into English, but "Lucienne" is a really "old" grandma name in these parts, and "Lucienne's Quest" immediately invokes images of a granny going on an adventure. It's hard to translate in English because JRPG devs (animanga too) actually often use old-timey names for their characters like Cecilia, Muriel, Henrietta, Millicent, etc. :p Ben · Salvidrim!  02:37, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Salvidrim!: Haha that's great. Oh and I found a scan of the manual. If you want to use the image for the infobox: https://archive.org/stream/Luciennes_Quest_1996_Panasonic_US#page/n0/mode/2up I'm OK either with this or keeping the current box. TarkusABtalk 02:42, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I think the booklet cover is a slightly better fit. How about a character list? Needs to check if the JP.wiki VAs also have enwiki articles to make it worth. Ben · Salvidrim!  17:49, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think the article needs a character list. The characters are not discussed independently by RSs. TarkusABtalk 18:14, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, but without making it an actual list, if the VAs also have enwiki articles it might be worth mentioning them. There is value is interlinking arists to their works. Ben · Salvidrim!  18:26, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK the ones with EN articles are Megumi Hayashibara (Lucienne), Hekiru Shiina, Takashi Nagasako, Takkō Ishimori, Yūko Miyamura, Nobuo Tobita. Is there a source stating their involvement? Maybe the in-game credits? TarkusABtalk 18:59, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your correction for edits on Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum theft

[edit]

Regarding your request for a more reliable source for the contribution I made, I just wanted to find out what would be an appropriate citation for a pop culture reference like a TV show. Would I want to cite the show and episode itself? To that end, I'm glad you made the edit, as my change can simply be added to the end of the first paragraph of that section, once I get the citation correct. Jcoral629 (talk) 01:55, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jcoral629: Secondary sources are preferred to primary ones. See WP:RS for what constitutes as a reliable source. Since wikis are user generated, they are unacceptable. If you can't find a secondary source, use the episode as the primary source and use Template:Cite episode to build the reference. And yes, I think a simple add on the serialized list in paragraph one is best. TarkusABtalk 02:33, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help in regards to Atari Jaguar articles!

[edit]

Hi! Hey, sorry if i'm bothering you but i need help in regards to adding cover arts to Atari Jaguar game-related articles and i don't know if you can help out in that regard but check the List of Atari Jaguar games and see the ones that need a cover art for illustrative purposes. BTW, i'm the one who suggested in adding the US cover art of Lucienne's Quest into the article so good job in that regard! Have a good day. KGRAMR (talk) 01:33, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@KGRAMR: Which ones in particular need cover art? I'm not going to click through the whole list. And not that I'm not willing to help, but why are you asking me, do you know how to upload images? It's pretty easy. TarkusABtalk 02:56, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@TarkusAB: These are the ones to make it easier. I really do not know how to upload cover arts and gameplay images into articles in any regard so that's one of the reasons, with the other one being that my best area is searching contemporary video games reviews for articles that are in the need for at least one. Anyway, here are the ones: World Tour Racing, Skyhammer, Zero 5, Supercross 3D, Super Burnout, Baldies and Hyper Force. KGRAMR (talk) 09:49, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@KGRAMR: Well as they say, give a man a fish.... The File Upload Wizard is very easy to use, it only takes a couple minutes to upload an image. You can use it to upload non-free images (cover art and screenshots). Just pick the option This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use. And then pick This is the official cover art of a work for cover art or This is an excerpt from a copyrighted work for screenshots. If you upload at least one image, I can help out with the others. TarkusABtalk 15:33, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@TarkusAB:Ok then, i'll follow your advice! I just want to make article look more presentable instead of being pure text. Thanks for the tip man. KGRAMR (talk) 18:38, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@TarkusAB:OK, so everything went well with the very first file i've uploaded (AirCars) so i really hope to not get in trouble, as i followed every step the File Upload Wizard listed at me. Thanks again man and have a good day! KGRAMR (talk) 21:51, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@KGRAMR: Good job, everything looks great. No one will get in trouble. The image is a bit large for non-free use, so a bot will resize it, this is normal. Non-free images must be less than 100,000 pixels (that is: width X height must be less than 100,000). TarkusABtalk 22:23, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@TarkusAB: Thanks as always man! Keep the good work here at Wikipedia. KGRAMR (talk) 22:25, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@TarkusAB: Hey! Sorry if i'm bothering you but i need your help once more. If i want to upload a gameplay screenshot exclusively for Wikipedia (a.k.a No other equivalent elsewhere on the internet) what i should need to do in that regard? KGRAMR (talk) 04:04, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@KGRAMR: No problem. Upload it the same way you uploaded the cover art, just pick This is an excerpt from a copyrighted work instead of This is the official cover art of a work. When it asks where you got the picture, just say you took it yourself in an emulator, or whatever. TarkusABtalk 04:10, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@TarkusAB: Excellent! This will help me in the long run so, thanks a lot man! KGRAMR (talk) 04:29, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@TarkusAB: Hi! Hey, i need you help in regards to pictures one last time! If i want to upload pictures like this for example: https://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/original/0/1992/1077667-e395.jpg to better represent an article, what i should do on File Upload Wizard? Do The Math (talk) 03:27, 7 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@KGRAMR: Ehhh I don't think you can use that image. Unless it was published with a free license (which it doubt), then it's not a free image to use. You'd need to have some type of non-free use rationale to use it, and I can't see how that picture will be crucial to the reader's understanding of a passage. Also you don't have to ping me in your replies, I get notified if someone writes on my talk page. TarkusABtalk 04:06, 7 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@TarkusAB: Oh ok! Well, thanks anyway mate! Do The Math (talk) 04:13, 7 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. While you deleted my redundant addition of guest contributors to the lead, what made the other edits original research, even if I provided a reference link? 71.58.214.46 (talk) 18:21, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

But you did not provide a reference link. We need reliable sources that mention the inclusion of Ariel Pink, Gibbs, and Posdnuos. Addition of unsourced content constitutes original research. And in my research at least, I've found that Ariel Pink was a rumored collaborator but has not been conclusively proven to be featured in any songs. And yea as far as the lede goes, we don't need to list out the collaborators because there are so many and people will just add more and more. Just mentioning that there were collaborators is enough. TarkusABtalk 18:38, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Great work!

I believe I have thanked you in the past on this, but great work on your horror video game articles. Are you going to submit Clock Tower (series) as a good topic? :) Andrzejbanas (talk) 19:18, 3 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Andrzejbanas: Thank you! There's still quite a few more horror games I want to get to one day, been occupied with other obscure Japanese games recently. And funny you ask about Clock Tower, because I put it up for nomination just a few days ago! TarkusABtalk 20:27, 3 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request for magazine scans in order to introduce missing Atari Jaguar reviews

[edit]

Hi! Hey, i'm looking for VideoGames: The Ultimate Gaming Magazine's February 1995 issue (#73). I don't know if you can help me there but its in order to introduce the last missing contemporary review of Iron Soldier at last. https://www.retromags.com/magazines/usa/videogames-the-ultimate-gaming-magazine/videogames-the-ultimate-gaming-magazine-issue-73/ Do The Math (talk) 21:53, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@KGRAMR: I will place the request for you, but avoid turning reception tables into a catalog of every score. It's a pain to look through. Write the reception section first, then use the table as a tool to present the scores of the reviews discussed in the article body. In other words, per T:VGR: "The reviews table supports the text. It is not to replicate the function of external review aggregators." TarkusABtalk 22:21, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@TarkusAB: Thanks as always and i'll keep that advice in mind! Do The Math (talk) 22:40, 5 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Possible collaboration

[edit]

If you ever want to collaborate on a Kirby-related article, let me know! (I know this may seem a bit random, but Kirby's one of my favorite games). JOEBRO64 16:08, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@TheJoebro64: I'm down my dude. Kirby's Adventure has always been on my radar, one of my favorite NES games. I'd like to get the SNES/NES mini topics to good article one day, so the SNES titles too I suppose. Kirby 64 I'd be down for as well, still own my childhood copy in my game collection. Adventure and 64 are the only ones I've played. I've wanted to play Dream Land 3 for a long time but it's one of the few SNES games that uses some weird ass chip so I can't play it on my flash cart, and I don't like to use emulation. Not about to pay $100 or whatever it is for a copy. TarkusABtalk 16:38, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sweet. Adventure's one of my favorite NES games too. I've actually got a copy of the 20th anniversary collection, which comes with a booklet that has some interesting development information for about every game up to 2012. I'll try to see if I dig it up. JOEBRO64 16:45, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@TheJoebro64: Cool. Honestly, I've actually been somewhat enjoying writing reception sections recently, can you believe it??? I can handle reception/legacy on these games if you want to do development/release. I can start working on Kirby's Adventure soon, and then we'll go from there. The only outstanding thing I need to finish is the reception and legacy on Phantasy Star Online. I got so burnt out writing the rest of the article that I'm waiting a little while before I go back LOL, so this is a good distraction. And in the spirit of HAL Laboratory, I've been eyeing to improve Metal Slader Glory which is surprisingly historically significant for how unknown it is outside Japan. Maybe there's potential for some serious HAL work. TarkusABtalk 18:35, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds tight. I need to finish implementing some new sources for the Batman & Dracula trilogy article, so when I'm done I'll start gathering sources for Adventure. I actually feel a bit burned out by reception sections now for some reason—I used to like writing them, but ever since Sonic Adventure I've felt like when I write them they're either too short or heavy on quotes. JOEBRO64 20:19, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hey! I just wanted to tell you that I just finished writing the development section in my sandbox, but I'm afraid it's a bit messy and might be hard to read. Would you mind giving it a little copyedit? JOEBRO64 22:56, 14 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, will do Sunday. TarkusABtalk 02:38, 15 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Just finished sourcing the gameplay section. Do you think there's anything else left to do before we nominate? I think it looks about ready, just wanted to hear your thoughts first. JOEBRO64 14:29, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@TheJoebro64: It looks good to me. I think it's nicely written and cohesive of the topic. You can nominate it if you feel it's ready too. TarkusABtalk 14:44, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have access to the Nintendo Power scan? The GA reviewer pointed out that there appears to be a contradiction with it in the reception section, but I don't have access to it. I wanted to know if you did because you added it and felt like you would be able to handle it better than me. JOEBRO64 23:01, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yep I have access to it. Sometime ago I downloaded NP 1-145, can't remember from where. I think a torrent. TarkusABtalk 00:44, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help in deleting images no longer used

[edit]

Hi man! Sorry if i'm bothering you right now but i need help in deleting these images that are no longer needed. Why you may ask? Well i took a look at how Sonic Mania and your work at Steam-Heart's have the pictures laid out so there's that and i've uploaded better ones so that's another reason as well. Can you help out with that or show me how to do so? These are the images in question: 1, 2, 3 & 4. Do The Math (talk) 21:53, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@KGRAMR: Non-free images that are not used in any articles will be automatically deleted by a bot. You don't need to do anything. Generally don't upload multiple screenshots like that in one image, because the bot will shrink the image down so much it you won't be able to make it out, as I'm sure you learned (I should have done that with Sonic Mania). A good rule of thumb is to generally only upload one screenshot, other screenshots should be added only when there is a need for it. The reason I uploaded multiple images for Sonic Mania and Steam-Heart's were because in the case of Sonic Mania, it was necessary to show a significant aspect of development discussed in prose. And in the case of Steam-Heart's, it was needed because the cutscene images were discussed extensively by critics, moreso than the gameplay. In the cases you provided, there is no good rationale for two or three images, one screenshot it enough. TarkusABtalk 22:23, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@TarkusAB: OK, well thanks for the advise as always :) Do The Math (talk) 00:04, 13 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Jill Valentine

[edit]

Hi. I realise you only participated briefly at this article's last peer review, but I was wondering if you'd be interested in looking at Jill Valentine again and seeing if there's any way I can improve it before I renominate it at FAC? I've been working on the article for several months [on-and-off] at this point, and I'm pretty happy with it now, but I'd appreciate any advice you might have. As you probably remember from the sheer length of that peer review, it was quite ... umm... "protracted", so I understand if you don't wanna involve yourself in this again. Thanks. Console +

[edit]

It's a French mag that ran from 91-2012. Their coverage of JP games is pretty solid, you might find them useful. It has a whole section "Direct en Japon", previewing Japanese console and arcade games, and they also review many JP only games as well. I've seen them review Policenauts, Front Mission, Front Mission Gun Hazard, Blue Seed, and even super obscure titles like "Twin Goddesses". Harizotoh9 (talk) 19:57, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Harizotoh9: Thanks, I am aware of them. Coverage of Japanese games was generally better in Europe, I think because they were more inclined to import due to the 60 vs. 50 Hz advantage. TarkusABtalk 19:59, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely think that mag should be catalogued in the VG Reference Library. It has a lot of obscure games in it. It's also in French too, which is very easy to translate into English. JP is a lot more difficult. Harizotoh9 (talk) 21:53, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Harizotoh9: I agree. I'm certainly not gonna spend the time to catalog it however. TarkusABtalk 22:16, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I did a quick run through of all the issues up to 2001 and added "ref ideas" for the ones that stood out (JP exclusives, rare games, or ones without many sources). A proper catalogue in the Reference Library should be the next step. Harizotoh9 (talk) 10:41, 15 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sonic Shuffle plot summary

[edit]

Hello. As one of the editors who helped work on this article, I would like to commend you for your efforts in improving Sonic Shuffle to GA status; I was planning to help take it to GA myself a few years ago. For the plot summary, I used the Crash Bash and Crash Team Racing articles as models. Since it's already a GA and the summary has been removed, do you think it's absolutely necessary to reinstate the plot summary at the moment? Thanks, Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 00:19, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There shouldn't be a plot summary. The plot should be represented as much as it is in secondary sources which is...almost non-existant. It's a party game more than anything, not known for its story. I think our standards have changed since CTR was promoted. TarkusABtalk 01:22, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Got it, thanks. Just wanted to be sure. Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 01:37, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DirectX & Vulkan games lists

[edit]

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I have no involvement in the creation or editing of any of the following lists, and I am not a registered Wikipedia user.

I was looking for current lists of DirectX 12 and Vulkan games a few days ago to see how the adoption of each technology is progressing. I noticed that the list of DirectX 12 games had been deleted from Wikipedia, as well as the list of DirectX 11 games (I also checked to see if the DirectX 10 and DirectX 9 lists had been deleted, which they had, but these latter two are not really topical to ongoing games development).

I have read through Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of games with DirectX 12 support and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of games with DirectX 11 support (as well as Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of games with DirectX 10 support and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of games with DirectX 9 support), and based on the discussion on those pages, I believe List of games with Vulkan support should be deleted as well then, since this kind of information was deemed better suited to categories and inclusion in individual games articles.

As you know, Vulkan and DirectX 12 are two competing technologies with similar utilization in new PC games at the moment (currently they are much more closely matched in utilization by developers than OpenGL versus older versions of DirectX historically were, for example). Neither has become dominant over the other on platforms where both exist (i.e. Windows 10, which currently constitutes ≈60% of the PC gaming market and continues to gradually increase among Windows users versus the usage shares of Windows 7 and 8/8.1, as per statistics like https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam). Additionally, Vulkan is supported on Linux; Linux presently accounts for ≈0.59% of the PC gaming market (Steam statistics). As for consoles, DirectX 12 is also supported on Xbox One; Vulkan is also supported on Nintendo Switch (https://www.khronos.org/conformance/adopters/conformant-products#submission_310).

As for DirectX 11, developers continue to support it as well, and it is supported on Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7, and Xbox One. Vulkan is also available for Windows 7 and 8/8.1. Windows 7 and 8/8.1 currently make up ≈35% of the PC gaming market (figure taken from aforementioned Steam statistics). There is some evidence (e.g. https://www.dsogaming.com/editorial/the-state-of-dx12-games-in-2017-is-directx-12-losing-its-steam/) that some developers continue to prefer DirectX 11 over both Vulkan and DirectX 12 on Windows (as Vulkan and DirectX 12 are notably different technologically from OpenGL and previous versions of DirectX), although that preference may change as developers become more experienced with DirectX 12 and Vulkan. So DirectX 11 remains relevant as well, at least for the time being.

Given the reasons stated in the deletion discussion pages for DirectX 12, 11, 10, and 9, I believe List of games with Vulkan support should be deleted as well. As I mentioned, I am not a registered Wikipedia user (nor am I very familiar with the deletion process), so I am asking if you would be willing to nominate List of games with Vulkan support for deletion.

If, and only if, List of games with Vulkan support isn't deemed suitable for deletion, then I think List of games with DirectX 12 support and List of games with DirectX 11 support should be restored given that they convey related information (i.e. trends in ongoing use), as I've tried to highlight in the preceding two paragraphs; List of games with DirectX 10 support and List of games with DirectX 9 support clearly should remain deleted as they are not relevant. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:6C58:4B7F:F346:80BA:E512:CE65:346 (talk) 11:56, 20 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yea I agree, I wasn't aware of this article. I nominated it for deletion. TarkusABtalk 14:08, 20 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help with Streets of Rage source

[edit]

Hey, Tarkus! According to WP:VG's reference library page, you seem to be in possession of the wonderful book on classic Sega MD/Genesis games called Sega Mega Drive/Genesis: Collected Works. If you have the time, I wonder if it's possible to ask you to provide access to portions of the book related to the history and development of the first Streets of Rage game, especially the bits related to its early days as a sequel to Sega's older game ESWAT: City under Siege. Your help would be invaluable in helping beef up the sadly lacking Development section of the first SOR game's Wikipedia entry. Thanks in advance. Electroguv (talk) 22:42, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wow that article is in horrible shape...Yes I can scan passages for you. I can't see anything about ESWAT, but there are a few nice interviews and some cool design documents with notes. The article deserves some work with SoR4 coming out and all. Give me a few days, I'll scan the key passages for you. I'll ping you when it's ready. TarkusABtalk 23:52, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Will be looking forward to hearing from you, then! Electroguv (talk) 23:28, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Alright @Electroguv: I scanned some interviews. I did not bother scanning the design documents because there wasn't much material there. Only real notable thing was it did have a working title of "D-Swat". The caption says: "Dated 16 July 1990 - just over a year before release - this spec reveals that the game's working title was 'D-Swat' or 'Dragon Swat', referencing Technos Japan's Double Dragon". There is no mention of E-Swat. Once you finish adding in content, I can add in any minor stuff from the design docs worth mentioning. TarkusABtalk 02:33, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Great, many thanks for sharing these!!! Although it is quite a shame that the book doesn’t cover SoR in greater detail. At first it seemed to me that there would be something like a “behind-the-scenes” style retrospective on the first game with an overview of development details such as the project’s historical background, informantion about the team and project management, stuff like that. Nevertheless, thanks a ton for taking the time to give access to these passages. Kudos! Electroguv (talk) 17:35, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Pocky & Rocky series

Snatcher

[edit]

Just to correct you on something, but Satoshi Yoshioka had no involvement with the original PC-8801 and MSX2 versions of Snatcher. If you've actually researched the staff rolls of those versions, his name does not appear in them. His first involvement in the series was with the PC Engine version. This is why you should be careful of using western sources like Kotaku. There's a few interviews in the liner notes for the official soundtracks that have been translated at JUNKER HQ that you might want to use for reference.. Anyway, I applaud for your effort to improve the article, but I feel your prose seems a bit too flowery for my taste with terms like "brainchild" and "brought to life" (but that's just my preference). Jonny2x4 (talk) 21:22, 8 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jonny2x4: I had that feeling about Yoshioka. I misread Satoshi Yoshikawa as him in the game credits, and felt very confused. Thanks for clearing that up.
Thanks for the liner notes translations, I hadn't noticed those on Junker HQ. There are some interviews in Japanese strategy guides too but I don't have access to them and the guides are expensive. I would translate them if I did.
I haven't gave the article a copyedit yet. I don't like the term brainchild either but I couldn't pick another term. He was not director until the PC Engine release. He was writer and designer but he was effectively the director. Was just trying to find a way to say this. Please copyedit if you would like. TarkusABtalk 21:35, 8 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
We'll stick to "brainchild" for now I guess. A lot of older video games didn't use the term "director" when crediting the lead game designer. They would often use the term "planner" or simply "game designer". In the case of Kojima himself, he was credited as "game designer" in the MSX Metal Gears and as a planner on the 8-bit versions ofSnatcher. They didn't start calling him a 監督/kantoku (director) until the PC Engine version. In the liner notes for the original Snatcher, he says that he and character designer Tomiharu Kinoshita were pretty much the first people involved with the project. I think Naoki Matsui, who is credited as supervisor on the 8-bit versions (and was Hideo Kojima's mentor and benefactor during that period), was more involved in the technical side of things if you look at the ridiculously specific credits of the end sequence. Not sure if you want to bring him up though (he does show up on the promotional flyer for the 8-bit versions). Jonny2x4 (talk) 03:34, 10 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonny2x4: Yea I'm not going to bring up Matsui unless he's mentioned in an interview or something. So far, I've only seen him in the credits.
In the liner notes for the original Snatcher, he says that he and character designer Tomiharu Kinoshita were pretty much the first people involved with the project. Hmmmm, what liner notes?? TarkusABtalk 11:13, 10 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The liner notes for the PC8801 OST album. Kojima states 僕は、開発初期のマッドと二人でやってた頃が楽しかったですね. The interview also has a hint of his Lindsay Wagner worship (lol). Matsui is also interviewed, but he doesn't talk about his work, although he does get introduce the team in this promotional flyer. He's mostly known among some Japanese fans for the MSX Gradius games and for his heavy metal/hard rock enthusiasm (he was, and still is, a musician). Capital letter of a gaming system

[edit]

I have rights to capitalize a gaming system like with the Mega Drive and stuff like that. Having it stated like in the various gaming lists is highly unacceptable and should not be tolerated as such. Zacharyalejandro (talk) 02:30, 15 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Zacharyalejandro: I agree to capitalize Mega Drive, but "arcade" is not a proper noun and thus should not be capitalized. TarkusABtalk 02:41, 15 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I need help editing

I need your help with licensing the Mega Man (Archie Comics) image in the Mega Man (character) or Rockman, article this would mean so much to me if you help. There will be another thing I need to tell if you respond thanks. TheSpiderKid (talk) 21:18, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@TheSpiderKid:
I added a license for the Archie Comics image. Use the File Upload Wizard next time you want to upload an image so all that work is done for you. If someone reverts the image back to classic Mega Man, you'll need to seek consensus before adding it back in.
Regarding X. We can't upload pictures of characters freely to Wikipedia. Characters are copyrighted works, so it needs to meet a set of non-free use criteria to be eligible to upload to Wikipedia as a non-free work. For video game characters, this means we need significant commentary on the character, such that omitting an image of the character would be detrimental to the reader's understanding. We have that for normal Mega Man, but don't have that for X. I have removed that image.
If you have any other questions, please ask them all. I prefer not being lead on. TarkusABtalk 22:39, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
