Toolserver database down

[edit]

The whole toolserver is down for a little bit, until we can find someone with the expertise to fix a problem with the MySQL database. [1] --Interiot 16:02, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It appears the tool server is back up again. semper fiMoe 21:35, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Apache was down momentarily for an unrelated issue (something about a bad auto-update debian package or something). But all throughout, MySQL has still been down. There's a few people discussing it in #wikimedia-toolserver now though, so maybe they'll have it worked out soon. --Interiot 21:43, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like it's back up (for the non-enwiki guys anyway). --Interiot 22:40, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Annnnd.... it's down again. Fuck it, see #wikimedia-toolserver for the latest status, that's the only place that will be up-to-date. --Interiot 23:16, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Articles created by me

[edit]

I was wondering if when you got the time you could please run an article created by me for me? It would be much appreciated. Thanks!--Andrew c 15:02, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

We don't have any enwiki data on the toolserver right now, as a result of the toolserver admins' efforts to get enwiki up to date. Ask me again in a week or two. --Interiot 15:22, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Decreasing Total Count

[edit]

I spend a good portion of my time marking new posts for speedy deletion. Everytime an article is deleted my count decreases. Is there a way to calculate those edits to make for a more accurate count of edits? Mkdw 01:28, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If the toolserver ever starts running again, my toolserver-based edit counter will tell you the number of total deleted edits you've made. Until then though, no, there's no way that I know of on-wiki to get any sort of deleted-edit count. There was some discussion about Yurik's query.php being able to do it, but he said it's not likely. [2] --Interiot 01:41, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Which tool would show the number of deleted edits? I don't think you mean the 'wannabe kate's' tool, do you? semper fiMoe 20:11, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, the fast one that relies on the toolserver database [3] (the one that hasn't worked for like 7 months for en.wikipedia.org). --Interiot 21:15, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Updating my newpage list

[edit]

Hey there Interiot, would you mind updating the list of new pages I have created? —this is messedrocker (talk) 01:38, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If it's for enwiki, I can't right now... the enwiki database is being worked on to try to get it more up to date, so it's unaccessible to me. Ask again in a week or two... --Interiot 01:43, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Opt In problem

[edit]

Hi, my OptIn didn't work. Perhaps you could look after it. Thanks. --aktionsheld

[edit]

Hi, Interiot! A few of us are working on identifying and deleting copyright violations by users with multiple such problems. To that end, would it be possible for you to prepare new articles reports for User:Jack Cox and User:Witkacy? See User:W.marsh/list for more context. I realize the toolserver is down but there's no hurry and I wanted to know if you'd agree in principle. Haukur 17:06, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, if I had the ability to do so, I'd gladly create lists of articles created by users with reoccurring copyright issues... I already do this for other wikis. Unfortunately I don't really have a way to do this until the toolserver comes back up, and who knows whether that'll take another 5 months or not. --Interiot 17:10, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wannabe Kate counter

[edit]

Interiot, can you please add the edits per day (Total edits / number_of_days_since_the_first_edit) which used to be there in one of your earlier counters. tia, Tintin (talk) 13:36, 30 October 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Wouldn't that require some sort of opt-in thingie? Titoxd(?!?) 16:25, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It already technically might require opt-in due to the "top 10" list of articles, and the monthly bars. But ze Germans gave me a reprieve when I made the tool only work for en.wikipedia.org. I suppose someone on enwiki could still potentially threaten to sue them over German law, but that hasn't happened yet. If it did, I'd probably try to find another host for it, since it's not tied to any given server. --Interiot 16:41, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
a) strangly It does not give a stat-bar for 11/06 but still adds the total count[4]. b) how much bw do you think it will use? Agathoclea 17:39, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It consumes an average of 3mb from Wikipedia for each person, and some people's Special:Contributions dump takes over 20mb.
Well, what do you know, the algorithm that figures out what months to display has a comment "this is a fairly odd algorithm". I've put a bandaid over the issue, it should be working now. Thanks for the bug report. --Interiot 18:20, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Pity about the bw, otherwise I could have offered an account on my server, but I would not have enaugh spare. Agathoclea 18:41, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's sucking down about 4GB a day. [5] No wonder Wikipedia blocks these counters once the toolserver comes back up. Thanks for the thought though. --Interiot 18:54, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Empty edits

[edit]

I've noticed a lot of empty edits showing up on my watchlist lately. (eg. [6]) Just curious whether there's a purpose to these? --Interiot 03:13, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not empty edits. Check carefully. I removed the same hyphen in all of them. They all had "wholly-owned subsidiary". I hate the hyphen with the -ly mistake. There were hundreds of them. So I just went through very quickly getting rid of them all. That's why I didn't leave an edit summary. It would have taken too long. Is there a way to automate this? I just got AutoWikiBrowser. So I'm studying that. I don't know much about bots. There are even more of the mistake, "publicly-owned". I don't know if I have the drive to get rid of all those. I recognize your account name. You're one of the biggies, so if you have any advice for me, I'd be glad to hear it. Such as: how can I find all -ly adverbs with a hyphen? Would love to get rid of that. It's sometimes the little mistakes like that that make Wikipedia look amateurish. I'd be grateful for any advice you have to give. Thanks. SDC 03:27, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ranchero article

[edit]

Hi. I've been a car nut for years and only just discovered the Rio Grande when searching eBay for a 1969 Ranchero. Knew about the 500 and the GT but never this one. Just bought a base Ranchero for practically nothing and I was out searching eBay for some goodies. There are presently three Rio Grandes for sale on the site. I'll contact one of the owners ASAP and find out where he got his info. His is the auction I based a lot of this little breakaway on. - Lucky 6.9 07:12, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I tried opting in by copying and pasting edit counter opt-in terms into my talk page and then refreshing the page and nothing happened. Am I doing something wrong. --—Preceding unsigned comment added by Kc12286 (talkcontribs)

That counter doesn't work for enwiki for now, because the toolserver is having problems. In the meantime, you'll probably want to use something like wannabe_kate. --Interiot 21:46, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edit counter

[edit]

It might be useful to show articles that have a high percentage of edits by the person instead of just a high number of edits, to identify articles that demonstrate their writing well. You'd have to find a way for it not to return simple things like redirects that only one person has contributed to, though. — Omegatron 00:57, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Probably possible. Sooner or later, hopefully someone will implement full history analysis for articles, and this would presumably be part of that. My current articles-created query takes a fair bit of time to run already though, I may not implement it soon. --Interiot 04:18, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have a link to your counter on my user page which used to work. When I clicked it today it asked me to make an edit to my talk page. I tried it there and on the user page and neither worked. Help! --Beth Wellington 21:19, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Interiot...

[edit]

I've set up a Virtual classroom for Wikipedians wishing to finetune or expand their Wikipedia skills. Currrently, we are comparing the interfaces (the operating systems, programs, extensions, scripts, and settings) each of us use to make use of and work upon Wikipedia. I'm inviting the most experienced users I can find so that students who visit the class will be able to learn by their example. Please stop by and share your methods and expertise. Sincerely, The Transhumanist 02:08, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry 'bout that

[edit]

I wasn't sure if you were going to add anything to the internal interface section or not. My mistake. The Transhumanist 03:51, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I noticed you are having the same problem with your footer that I used to have with mine. That is, when posters click the "+" at the top of the page, it creates a new section below your footer, creating the need to move the footer back down there. See the wikicode at the top of my talk page for a fix that keeps the footer at the bottom, courtesy of Rick Block. Hope this helps. The Transhumanist 04:00, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

reply to "various bits"...

[edit]
Very interesting. It figures you designed it. . I'll keep a lookout for any footer misbevior. Thanks for the heads up. As for external/internal, I thought there was a cut and dried difference between tools used outside and inside the mediawiki environment. You've certainly blurred that line, and have improved my awareness. Thanks. I'll add a see note so others know that you've covered both in one post. The Transhumanist 04:16, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Adminship

[edit]

I am sorry for not having answered before, I needed some time to think. Many had asked me to try to become an administrator, and I had refused because I did not feel like I needed the tools. As you have pointed, until a month ago I thought the same. However, you may be right. I am a WikiGnome, and that fact won't change, as an editor or sysop. As you know, we enjoy giving a hand here and there, fixing small things, improving others, but never staying too long in the same place. In a similar fashion, as an administrator I would help with backlogs, block repetitive vandals, protect some articles, and then continue with tasks that may not require these tools. I know you are not supposed to be an administrator 100% of your time. After all, this is an encyclopedia :-) But wanted to clarify that WikiGnomes rarely change, and thus I may disappoint some people who may expect me spending more time using administrator tools. -- ReyBrujo 12:39, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, what I can say... I am overwhelmed :-) I am used to work silently, and kind of evade recognition because I joined this project without looking for it. However, I just can't refuse to become "more useful" for the community, and if that implies becoming an administrator, it is worth trying. I will nominate myself someday this week, after I have reviewed my edit history (thus, I will be less active around). Thanks for your advice, it was very welcomed. -- ReyBrujo 21:15, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A question about your interface

[edit]

You posted a "keymarks.js" file at the Virtual classroom. How do you operate such a script? Is that a user.js file? The Transhumanist 22:06, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's part of a custom Firefox extension that I need to release sooner or later. As I mentioned on the page, it mostly acts like the standard keymarks which anyone can use. In this case, I just add the ability for me to host the keymarks on a central server (so all of my computers get a consistent set of keymarks), and I can tweak the arguments of the keymarks a little bit (as I mentioned, allowing "w $page" to prune things like "blah blah link blah blah" down to just "link" (as well as changing "blah blah link blah blah" to "Template:Link").
You can install the .xpi here if you want, though it has no uninstall, it doesn't show up in your extension list for some reason, and it also needs to be reinstalled every time the browser version is upgraded. So it's not ready to be released yet. But really what it is is a server-side Greasemonkey... it can run ANY javascript that can makes the insides of Firefox do nearly anything, which makes it very useful for multiple installations of Firefox. If there's interest, I could see about releasing it sooner. I'm just not sure how many users there are who are willing to update their browser config by SSH (or otherwise update their configuration server-side (though... I suppose one might be able to use any MediaWiki installation to host .js files. Though in this case, they'd be used for off-wiki purposes as well, so it might not be so kosher)). --Interiot 22:17, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What if you install the XPI, and it conflicts with something? How do you get rid of it?

And what is the difference between bookmarks and keymarks? Do the keymarks get displayed in the bookmark menu, and can they be exported as bookmarks with the rest of one's bookmarks? The Transhumanist 05:22, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I guess you could install the latest version of Firefox again, that would do it. But I've been intending to release it sooner or later, so I could do that instead if there's interest.
Normal keymarks that are built in to Firefox show up as bookmarks, in your bookmarks folder, except that the special "keyboard" box gets filled in [7]. My "server-side keymarks" don't show up in the local browser UI, they show up only in the server files. --Interiot 05:38, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That would be cool, because of the extra functionality. How much development time is involved? The Transhumanist 20:53, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll see if I can get a beta version out this weekend, it shouldn't take too much effort (I just have to read the "roll your own Firefox extension" tutorials that show up occasionally on Digg... the metadata files on mine have some weird issue) --Interiot 21:13, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, there's an initial release here. --Interiot 08:38, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Siberian wikipedia

[edit]

Hi there,

Is it possible to use your edit counter with ru-sib.wikipedia.org ? Thanks. --Amir E. Aharoni 09:24, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah. I don't control the server list for the toolserver, DaBpunkt does. As I understand it, new wikis should get automatically added. Has the wiki been around for a while? --Interiot 14:19, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. It was open on the 1st of September, if i recall correctly. --Amir E. Aharoni 19:23, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hrm, I asked around, but people don't seem to be around on IRC right now. Anyway, I myself can't solve this... if you're able to hop on IRC, it would be good to stop by #wikimedia-toolserver, and ask around about replication of the server's data. --Interiot 20:11, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, DaBpunkt added it, it should show up on the list now. --Interiot 23:10, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, i still don't see it. How is it supposed to be called? --Amir E. Aharoni 20:58, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
DaBpunkt had one last step he forgot to do. It should work now, ru_sibwiki_p. --Interiot 21:16, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

about the edit counter

[edit]

Hi! I was wondering how come the edit counter gives me the correct number my of edits, but it shows the links to only some of the articles to which I contributed, not all of them. Thanks for your help.SFinamore 01:12, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've got three counters... is it this one? If you're using that for enwiki, it does have pretty old data. Try something else, like wannabe_kate. --Interiot 02:54, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think I'm already using wannabe kate... this is the link to my edit count: [8] I think it's wannabe kate. It reports the links to only the first articles I edited, not to all of them. For example it doesn't show the link to other mainspace articles I edited later, or even to this talk page. However, the edit count is updated immediately after each edit. I don't know whether that's normal. Thank you very much! SFinamore 14:26, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edit counter

[edit]

The better solution for edit-counting might be (barring integration with Wikimedia) to take an rc feed as AntiVandal-Bot does and once a user has been queried keep their counts updated. I could run a baseline of non-deleted edits at a given dump date, but it would be of limited use becasue of synchronisation issues. What do you think? Rich Farmbrough, 12:03 14 November 2006 (GMT).

1) at that point, you'd more or less have another toolserver. And while we do need either the existing toolserver to work, or a new one to be created, I don't have the skill to do it. And 2) I don't see the point in making a specialized toolserver that only does edit counts, because there are many other pretty important apps that run on the toolserver (probably more important than edit counting). --Interiot 12:53, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I was thinking on the current toolserver. It would be zero load on the main servers. Perhaps I need to apply for a toolserver account. Rich Farmbrough, 21:57 14 November 2006 (GMT).
Additional help is always welcomed. As I said, we really do have a large number of tools that are very useful to run, and several are more important than the edit counter (for instance, commons has a tool that checks whether an image is used on any server before deleting a commons image. Since enwiki and other servers don't replicate to the toolserver, commons deleters have to check these servers by hand every time they delete an image... that's just one toolserver tool that's important to get working). So if you'd like to help, it really would be best to get the general database replication working. Working on only the edit counter would be working on a bandaid that will be discarded once the/a toolserver starts working again.
DaBpunkt has been working on importing a recent static dump of the enwiki database, but it's crashing for an unknown reason every time they try to import it. --Interiot 22:08, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes replication would render it moot, but is the problem on the toolserver? Rich Farmbrough, 22:15 14 November 2006 (GMT).
Incidentally I've been trying for about 10 days to download a partial dump, there's serious problems there too. Rich Farmbrough, 22:19 14 November 2006 (GMT).
MySQL crashes when they import the static dump. I haven't heard whether they know why it might be crashing, but one would think that if it's the toolserver mysql that's crashing, that the problem is likely on the toolserver side. (is that what you were asking?) --Interiot 22:34, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, not really, I was asking about the main reason that replication stopped in the first place, which seemed to be because of the way the en wiki was set up. Perhaps it's worth talking to DaBpunkt as you suggest. Rich Farmbrough, 22:40 14 November 2006 (GMT).
Oh, that. Um, first it was an architecture change (multiple masters to replicate from, which MySQL doesn't do natively). But DaBpunkt hacked a way around that. His replication code was a little buggy at first, but we've fixed almost all the bugs we know about. Then the increasing number of edits by all wikis overwhelmed the disk I/O the toolserver has, so they stopped enwiki just so dewiki and all the others wouldn't indefinitely lag. They ordered a new RAID card, got someone to drive out to Amsterdam, found out it was incompatible. Ordered a second one, drove out there, got it installed okay. So replag was 100+ days by then, so they had to import a static dump rather than trying to replicate the whole way through 100 days, and last I heard they were having problems importing the dump. --Interiot 22:50, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See below, de:Benutzer:DaB. is the one who does this. If you're ever on IRC, he can be found as "DaBpunkt" on the #wikimedia-toolserver channel. --Interiot 02:20, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jimbo

[edit]
An example of what the script normally is supposed to do, note that "stillnotelf" is lowercased

The correct title of this user's page is User talk:Jimbo. It appears incorrectly here because of technical restrictions.

:D What on earth! -- flutefluteflute  -->  talk  -->  contributions  19:14, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

*grin* For a time, the user-installable javascript fix being discussed here allowed visitors to see "User talk:Jimbo" at the very top. The script actually replaces the text at the very top (eg. intended to fix more mundane cases like lowercasing, so it looked pretty startling to see Jimbo up there. Nonetheless, I have no ill intent, and the latest version of the code totally prevents this from happening (hopefully). (the code will be part of the global MediaWiki:Common.js soon, hopefully). --Interiot 19:23, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Could you request this at de:Benutzer:DaB., or ask DaBpunkt if he's on the #wikimedia-toolserver channel on IRC. I can't add this, he's the only one who can, and I may be out for a few days and may not catch him when he's on. If I see him though, I'll let him know that it needs to be done. --Interiot 21:17, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Real title script

[edit]

Hi Interiot. I really love your title fixing script. Do you think it would be possible to fix sub- and super-script titles as well? See for example T1 space. A title of T1 space would be cut-and-pasteable because browsers don't copy super or subscripts. Just a suggestion :-) —Mets501 (talk) 16:25, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, done. --Interiot 01:59, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks!!! —Mets501 (talk) 02:45, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

interiot edit-counter and UTC

[edit]

Hello, it seems to me that the counter shows the user local time and not the UTC (as stated on the graphs). You can check it by watching the actual time (showing with a red line), and knowing your own editing-habits. Can you assure this and correct it? Misibacsi 20:54, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's not possible for the graph to show user local time, since the toolserver doesn't have access to user preference information, including their local time. All revision time information is stored in the database as UTC. --Interiot 20:57, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About the Edit Counts

Quick Question

[edit]

Hey, I was just wondering if there was any way to find out what my milestone edits were? Is there any way to find that out on the "wannabe kate" or any other way? Thanks. --  Mikedk9109  (talk)  04:28, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's not a way currently with any of my edit counters. I remember seeing it somewhere though... One of the tools listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject edit counters might do it. Otherwise, you might try asking at #wikimedia-toolserver or Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). --Interiot 06:44, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Do you know which tool? Thanks. --  Mikedk9109  (talk)  06:53, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, I don't remember the specific one. Maybe somebody on IRC or WP:VPT will remember. --Interiot 07:04, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help with editcount

[edit]
  • Hello, our page is still updated on semi-manual way, i mean we need to search user by user on editcount to get the statistics and digit on a table or somenthing like that. Isn´t there a way to get the number of editions and deleted editions from many users at once? Ty. Danilodn 17:28, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Interiot - Thanks for being so on-the-ball with the copyright notice. I was in the process of working on the article, but next time I'll sandbox it first. At any rate, I've rewritten the three sentences plus bullets that were problematic. Unfortunately, there is no way to "write from scratch" a bulleted list of award names. However, it's a little difficult to continue filling in the biographies and award recipients of the chemists without this page, so I'd appreciate it if you could review it. Best, LQ 23:00, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for super-fast action.--LQ 23:09, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I saw the div code you used to show the sliced fruit on your talk page. I used this as the basis of a new template User:HighInBC/ImageCrop. I was wondering what you thought of it, I have used it here User:HighInBC and here Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Hawk eye so far. HighInBC (Need help? Replied at User talk:HighInBC/ImageCrop. --Interiot 01:06, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, comments noted. I have recreated the article, hopefully with an encyclopedic tone - though I have little information about the school. I have no doubts about the merit of this being an article. Thanks part 13:47, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ImageCrop

[edit]

Wow, that is looking good[12]. Ultimatly I would like to see something like ImageCrop put right into the mediawiki engine. It already uses convert from ImageMagick to reduce image sizes, cropping can be done with the same program.

I will have to come up with a convert command line that does this and suggest it to the developers. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 03:37, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

*shrug* It won't really be used that much, will it? If I have any complaint at all, it's that we can't use style="background-image:..." to do this the more traditional way. [13] [14] [15] But even that's a minor issue. (I don't know what background-image gets you, other than one less <div>, and the ability to repeat the background (eg. I want my fruit to go all the way across the browser, but if someone had a 3000px+ display, it'd stop repeating at some point)) --Interiot 03:43, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think that article about maps for one would benifit, showing a small portion blown up without having to create a special image. Images of insects, or animals, can have certain portions of the anatomy pointed out etc... There is little demand now, but invention is the mother of neccesity. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 04:02, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'll agree with you there. For instance, almost all of the images in commons:Category:Ocean topography are simply crops of Image:LARGE elevation.jpg (warning: you may not want to try to view that full-size). On the other hand, it might encourage people to post more 15+MB images, which might eventually have a detrimental affect on the image servers... --Interiot 04:10, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes and Image:Whole world - land and oceans 12000.jpg(also not one to load in your browser) is often used as a starting point to crop new images from. I am not worried about large files, they raised the limit from 5mb to 20mb becuase they could handle it. It does take a minute or so to get the reduced version, but after that it is cached. A standard warning template should automatically show when the image is very large though(so people don't view it in their browser). HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 04:18, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

help desk question

[edit]

Hi - Per WP:HD#How to view annotation of an article? a user is looking for a way to find the edit that introduced a particular edit to an article. I generally do this by binary search of the article history. Seems like there's probably a way to do this with some funky javascript, which I could probably figure out how to do myself if I was sufficiently interested (but I'm not). Are you? -- Rick Block (talk) 04:36, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, come on, the javascript edit counter can't possibly be more complicated than finding the most recent edit to a particular article that added the string "foo". I could do it as a shell script, that anyone running Mac OS X or Linux could use, in an hour or two. I haven't done it because it really doesn't come up often enough to annoy me (and, most people run Windows and wouldn't have a frickin clue how to run a shell script). I think of you as "all about the tools", hence the pseudo challenge. If you really aren't interested enough to pursue this, that's actually fine with me. If you're interested in a shell version, let me know and I'll work on it. -- Rick Block (talk) 05:30, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that's true I guess, if you're looking for a single change, yeah, that's much easier than doing a full history analysis like the IBM paper discusses.
Actually, the one thing that I'm interested in is being able to search a person's talk comments... that should be similarly not too difficult, and yeah, I was thinking about doing a shell script for that at some point (though as you said, I'd like to release it in some form that's easy for others to use, but I'm only into unix scripts, not Windows GUI stuff). --Interiot 05:34, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Real Title Script Bug

New feature on your edit counter?

[edit]

I am totally not sure if this is the right time, or place, to ask you this, but it is worth a try. People, at least the people I know from Norwegian Wikipedia, has always been facinated on wich of their edits was number 1000, 2000, 3000 and so forth. This is possible, but difficult, to find out for the first 5000 edits from our contribution list on Wikipedia, but from 6000 and on it is near by impossible. I was hoping that you could add an option to your editcounter that showed what edits was my number 1000, 2000, 5000 and so forth. Just for the fun of it, of course, but if you have some spare time, and are bored...(?) Regards, Opus, (discussion) 08:36, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Sure, several people have asked for this feature. I'll see if I can implement it sometime. --Interiot 08:37, 29 November 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Hi Interiot! I use your edit counter often, and am beginning to have editcountitis. Still, I was wonering if this was the right place to request that your edit counter have a new feature. Just in case it is, I'll post it anyways. Is it possible to check when the user last edited? If so, can this be added to the edit counter? That's one of the first pieces of information that appears when you view Special:Contributions on someone (eg. it's the date on the first line)... Yeah, it can be added, but would it benefit many people? --Interiot 17:13, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Changes in edit counter?

[edit]

Something strange has happened to several users on nowiki, including myself. The numner of deleted edits has suddenly increased by several hundred, without any abnormal activity in the deletion log to explain it. In my case, I had 34980 edits on 16 November, and 35090 today, but my contribution list shows about 900 edits in that period, and my number of deleted edits has jumped by about the difference, aorund 800. Has there been any changes in the way the counter works, so that it has now picked up on more deleted edits? I'm sure there's a natural explanation for this, but several users have suddenly lost a great number of edits and are somewhat worried. Cnyborg 03:20, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Does this show anything unexpected? (that's the list of all your deleted edits)
If not, could you give me the usernames of a few more people who this has happened to? I'll have to bring it up with de:Benutzer:DaB. to see if there's something unexpected going on on the Toolserver side. --Interiot 03:26, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Need help with a query

[edit]

I am trying to find out how many Templates in the German Wiki have interwikilinks. So far I can only list those that have none (http://de.wikipedia.org/w/query.php?what=nolanglinks&nlnamespace=10). Is it possible to achieve what I want? Agathoclea 18:20, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If one had ~10GB of disk space, one could download a database dump, and have a script do a single pass through it. There may be a faster way to do it, but I don't know one offhand. --Interiot 18:34, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have just found API, with similar results. Would it be possible to do that on the toolserver? ie search template space for "[[en:"? Actually I'd be just interrested in a number not the actial articles which should reduce the load on the server in searching. Agathoclea 18:43, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I'd thought it wasn't available on the toolserver, but I guess there's a new table (langlinks). So what sort of data were you looking for? Just the count of templates that have inter-language links? Or a list of them, or what? --Interiot 18:48, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just a count of templates with interwikilinks (actually regardless of language concerned) Agathoclea 18:57, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This query is a tad bit of guesswork, but on dewiki, it says that 867 out of a total 10190 templates have interlanguage links (the list is here), does that seem like reasonable number? --Interiot 19:29, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT(page_id)) FROM page LEFT JOIN langlinks ON page_id=ll_from WHERE page_namespace=10 AND !ISNULL(ll_from);
Fantastic! Thank you very much. The number will be correct as Templates tend not to be visible and not many people bother about linking them - only people working on translations will do so. Agathoclea 19:45, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Wikidumper org.png

[edit]
Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Wikidumper org.png. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. When you use a generic fair use tag such as fair use or article name, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rory096 20:40, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edit counter bug?

[edit]

There seems to be a bug with your edit counter. It says for any user that all their edits are in the mainspace, and when it shows the amount of edits by page, all namespaces are shown to be in the mainspace. See [16]The Great Llamamoo? 22:35, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed it too. I tried it out and got very confused. Is there something wrong? --Farquaadhnchmn(Dungeon) 23:21, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, something's obviously wrong, I'll have a look. --Interiot 23:36, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ack. Apparently the NOC where the toolserver resides (Kennisnet) has had a power outage, so that sort of sucks. I'll get to this once the toolserver is back up. --Interiot 23:59, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ahh, yes, there were recently changes to Special:Contributions, which the script scrapes from. The code change was reverted though because of a few bugs, so my script is working again. Maybe it's time to make the script use query.php anyway. --Interiot 10:52, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Be warned, we found some issues with query.php when working on WP:1.0/I, and we couldn't figure out what was causing them, so you may want to tread lightly... Titoxd(?!?) 04:02, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Socks?

[edit]

Your blocks of Nareklm (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) and HayasaArmen (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) says the two accounts are the same person. Why isn't at least one of them indefblocked, esp. if they are both engaging in illicit activity? Just curious... —Wknight94 (talk) 12:06, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not that experienced with blocking, so feel free to advise or adjust if you feel strongly. I didn't see anything that stood out to me that one sock was being used to circumvent policy beyond the copyvios, and it seemed like casual copyvios were happening on both accounts. I personally think sockpuppets have acceptable uses, and since I didn't see any evidence of other problems, I assumed the sock was behaving acceptably unless evidence turns up otherwise. --Interiot 12:48, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll leave it up to you but typically I'll at least firmly encourage the use of User Alternate Acct and User Alt Acct Master at a minimum, esp. in cases where the user is engaging in improper behavior. It's not a big leap from copyvios to abusive sockpuppetry and no one will know to check for the sockpuppetry if a very public mention of the alternate accounts is not available. But I haven't examined this particular situation (I had counselled Nareklm in the past regarding his intial run-ins with copyvios but I figured he was past it - I was wrong) so it's your call. Cheers!  :) —Wknight94 (talk) 13:46, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Created article requests

[edit]

Hi, Just to make sure, you don't mind if I refer folks who want a list of articles they've created to you (right?). I didn't offer up your services this last time since it isn't working at the moment. -- Rick Block (talk) 02:39, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely, I'm happy to run it. It's been pretty useless for enwiki for months now, but running it for other servers is fine. (or if the edit counter ever starts working for enwiki again, then this report would be just fine for enwiki as well). --Interiot 02:45, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Laptop crashing

[edit]

As a champion of Firefox, I wonder if you've an insight as to why my laptop might be essentially screeching to a halt on most any history page I try to look at. Specs line is: "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0". According to the monitoring, I have a great wireless connection and such, and in particular commons picture catgegories download almost without delay--maybe half a second more than my desktop using a hardwire link. Have the same dwadling response, though not as eggregious for my own contribs, but I believe that is simply due to a high present default limit -- 1000 or perhaps 2000 edits, iirc. The desktop slowsdown sameway for that; whereas for the histories, most never finish loading at all, at all, even given several minutes. I usually have to stop the page, and go back. Baffling and frustrating! Thoughts? // FrankB 03:46, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hrm, I'm not sure. Is the laptop totally freezing up / crashing? Or is it slowing way down?
  • 1. If you have any Firefox extensions installed, can you try starting up Firefox in safe mode, and seeing if the problem still exists?
  • 2. Try disabling javascript and seeing if the problem still happens.
  • 3. Might the laptop be running out of RAM? Does Internet Explorer slow way down when you load the same page?
--Interiot 04:32, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  1. The page just seems to start loading, and keeps loading forever. I can alt-tab to other windows, and select other tabs, but that tab is essentially locked, save the mouse cursor will move around. The status bargraph (lower right corner) goes about half way and hangs, and if I'm trying to enter history from an edit preview window, a coupld of times I became concerned enough with the time delay, I tried to drag the new content and copy it into the cut buffer. It will let me highlight it with the mouse for an instant, but not let me C-c or C-x it into the buffer. Similarly, C-a, C-c/x fails to capture. Fortunately, stopping the new page load then restores the page to normal... but then I don't get the peek I want into history.
    1. Seems to me I recollect that I can go to a new tab and force it to history there, but not in an edit mode.
    2. In fact, I'm pretty certain the problem only manifests itself from within an edit screen, and operates fine outside one. (What does that tell us?)
  2. Don't believe I have many extensions if any added. This is near virgin new build computer, and since wife was buying a new practice at the time I suggested she plan on taking it for the new office. (Was a BD present, but also not what I wanted. I'm going to try a MAC for christmas, as windoze has worn out it's welcome!)
    1. OTOH, I've two teens, and the one may have added a few search bars and such.
    2. I'll give it a try sometime sunday.
  3. Ditto
  4. Don't think RAM would be the issue-- I recollect increasing the virtual memory setting, and RAM was 500 MEG, iirc. One time I definitely had it running sans anything else with a single tab, so it had all the resources outside the autoload processes.
  5. Didn't try it with IE7, as IE7 was loosing edits on me right and left when I first assayed it's perils, so have only edited on it once since. It behaved itself that day, so perhaps my bug report via a MS employee got addressed, and the auto-update fixed that issue. I can but hope. I even put up a warning box on some of my user pages about it, and think I dropped you a note back then. (June/July timeframe)

Thanks, I'll get back to you on the experiments. May get a chance to try late Sunday. Best! // FrankB 06:47, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    • Have determined that the behavior is only evincing when I'm off the AC power, and have seen similar effects on image loading now using IE7. That would imply a resource change and may be an effect of Centrino Tech? Since I'm not going to be using the particular laptop much from now on, I'm just going to stay plugged in if I edit using it at all. Thanks for the time, but thought you should know. Best! // FrankB 20:22, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Graphics Lab

I saw your name listed on Wikiproject Illustration or the list of graphic artists, and I thought I'd let you know that a Graphics Lab has been created on EN. Based on the highly successful French and German graphics labs, it seeks to better organise and coordinate our graphic design and photo-editing efforts. Up until now, there has been no common space on EN where users could ask for maps, charts and other SVG files to be created. What's more, the Graphics Lab has discussion boards, tips, tools and links; in sum, a good common workspace. Come help us out! The infrastucture is already in place, and now we need participants. :) --Zantastik talk 02:09, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Minor request for the wannabe tool...

[edit]

I was wondering if you could add a section (possibly right beside the username) that stated when the stats were accessed. I like to track my edits (not editcountits, per se, I just like seeing which namespaces I've been active in over the past few days), and often have several tabs open at the same time, but have only a rough idea as to when I pulled them up.

Like I said, minor request, and the world certainly won't end if you can't get to it (though that would be terribly embarrassing for a few minutes if it was). EVula // talk // // 06:14, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just display the timestamp when you ran the edit count? (in GMT) That's it? --Interiot 06:19, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just wanted to confirm I understood the request. Okay, there's a timestamp below the username now. It's ugly, but whichever. --Interiot 07:11, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the timestamp. I think it looks good (it is subservient to the other info on the page, which is good). Thanks for the quick change. EVula // talk // // 15:29, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Dear Interiot,

I am Grigol Gegelia, the chairman of Tbilisi Youth City Assembly.

I would be grateful if you could give me one or two reasons of why you deleted the Tbilisi Youth City Assembly article.

Yours sincerely,

Gegi Gegelia

It hasn't been deleted, it's still at User:Gegelia/Tbilisi Youth City Assembly. After you created it in July, Kober moved the article to your user space [17] after noting that it needed some cleanup. [18]
Later, I noticed the redirect that was left behind from Tbilisi Youth City Assembly. Redirects such as these are discouraged except temporarily after moving a page to user space. The reason for this is that either the redirect is an potential legitimate article title – in which case it should not point to a user page because they are generally considered to be "owned" by that user, not freely editable by everyone as articles should be – or it is an inappropriate article title, in which case it shouldn't exist at all. Redirects to user pages may be speedy deleted at any time under the criteria for speedy deletion.
If the user page is intended to be an article, it can be moved back out of user space. However, note that once it's moved to article space, it's subject to more stringent article standards, and could be deleted. It's probably a good idea to do some cleanup on it beforehand, if it's going to be moved out of user space. Kober did a good job on your talk page of explaining what may need to be cleaned up, and why it could be deleted if it were moved out of user space. --Interiot 19:23, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

If freakin' awesome! Just wanted to let you know I love it.

[edit]

If you read the Scapegoat article, you would have noticed I cited two different sources, one being what I thought was GFDL material on Last.fm. It's not my fault the people on Last.fm illegally copied something. I sent an e-mail to the local boys' label and asked if it was ok to distribute. I'll put their response on the talk page if it turns out to be cool with them. Dawhitfield 19:43, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alesana <-- these guys are on the same label as Scapegoat and they haven't been deleted due to not being important enough. For what it's worth, Scapegoat is on Ruckus and Pandora. Copied from Last.fm rules: "All submitted content remains copyright of the author, and is licensed under the GFDL." So, either Scapegoat and Tragic Hero don't care or are unaware of Last.fm's copyright violation. Dawhitfield 20:51, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Appropiate image tags

[edit]

Hey, I've been emailing a few websites, and Armenianhighland.com lets you use there resources includes the pictures. Also armenica.org lets you use there images as long its for educational purposes and no sells etc. I'm wondering what would be the appropriate tag for these? Nareklm 20:30, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The issue with armenica.org is the part about not allowing modification of the content. The GFDL (and all images posted here) are explicitly allowed to be modified, just as all the text is. So armenica.org content shouldn't be used here.
Material taken from Armenica.org must not be altered or modified without permission from Armenica.org [19]
The Armenianhighland.com site is difficult to navigate... do you have a link to where they say that their material may be used?
If you're looking for things like maps, there may be other places to look for free versions of those. Off the top of my head, I'm not familiar with Armenian content, but this mentions a number of sources, some of which contain non-US maps as well. And Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps or Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Images to improve are places that you can request that maps be created. --Interiot 21:38, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure about Armenian highland but i emailed the Owner of the website and they let you use there resources and Armenica this is what i was talking about

"Usage of Material The main goal of Armenica.org is to provide the general public with easily accessed reliable facts and information about Armenia and it's related issues. Hence, the material presented on Armenica.org is free to use (with exception for material which are marked for sale purpose) as long as customary regulations for copying material are respected:" Nareklm 05:30, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but the very next paragraph says the "do not modify" part, so Armenica material can't be used here while that's still in place. Perhaps someone could contact them and let them know that it's important to Wikipedia that material be able to be modified (eg. so that captions can be translated into other languages, and for other reasons), and that maybe they could change their license. Most likely their license mentions that because they don't want people to remove their logo from the corner of the image, but unfortunately that hinders their use on Wikipedia as well. (Wikipedia has no problem whatsoever crediting people, it's an important part of the GFDL... but at the same time, we allow everyone who uses Wikipedia material to modify it). --Interiot 05:41, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Again though, you can get a second opinion on any of this by asking at Wikipedia talk:Copyrights/Can I use.... --Interiot 05:41, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I dont get this modify? Doesn't that mean editing the image? or something? Nareklm 05:47, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it means editing the image. --Interiot 05:54, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But if i save the file and upload it to wikipedia thats not editing or modifying the image if i was to remove there link from the image on the picture that would consist from modifying but there fore i am not violating there rules? Nareklm 06:12, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's not the issue. The problem is that all material on wikipedia has to be compatible with the GFDL license (unless it's fair use). We make sure that all text and images on Wikipedia can be used and modified by other people. If it's not available under a compatible license, we can't use it.
As I said, they may just want to make sure they get credit for producing the image. If that's their main reason, then someone may be able to convince them to release their work under the GFDL license, because the GFDL makes sure they're given credit (not by keeping the watermark, but by noting in text beside the image). --Interiot 07:07, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The reason i want to use there images there very nicely made and accurate that its hard to not use them im having alot of trouble with the licenses if i were to give them credit with links would that help? Nareklm 07:15, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There's nothing that can be done on this side... they only way their images could be used is if someone contacts them and convinces them to release their images under a GFDL-compatible license. --Interiot 07:21, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This was the reply given:

That seems to be certainly within the spirit of the GFDL, and probably the letter. I'm not 100% sure though, so I want to ask for a second opinion at Wikipedia talk:Copyrights/Can I use...#Armenica.org. --Interiot 08:16, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey will this work? :P Lori Nareklm 06:07, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What was the specific question you originally emailed Amenica.org? Geni wanted you to send another email asking "Is modification allowed, as long as the image is still attributed to you from the text?" before using Amenica.org images. --Interiot 15:41, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

edit counter question

[edit]

hi - great tool, thanks for sharing it. But... I have a question: down below, where it lists edits by category, it only seems to show main pages that have over 10 edits, and doesn't list all the ones that have fewer. Is this a bug or a feature? Is there another counter that would list all of them? Thanks Tvoz 23:30, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It lists the top 10 most edited pages in each namespace. It's... a stop-gap, I suppose. If the toolserver's database ever starts working again for enwiki, then wannabe_kate will almost certainly be shutdown, because it's very inefficient. At that point, you'll be able to use the Contribution Tree, which does what you're looking for and more. Until then, it's possible there's another edit counter that could output the data you're looking for... I don't specifically know of one though. I keep asking for one of the offline tools to be able to spit out a .csv file so people can do all sorts of analysis in Excel, but that hasn't happened yet. Maybe I should add .csv output to wannabe_kate... --Interiot 23:48, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The back-end of the software is done, but it is difficult to spit out a CSV when some of the articles have commas within their titles. If you want, I can expose that functionality to the user, but I would want to know what to do about those before doing it... Titoxd(?!?) 23:52, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
thanks for the quick response - I don't have a specific need, just thought there might be a counter that would crunch the numbers so I could see the full monty of my edits. You've lost me on the csv stuff, but I feel like it's in good hands...Tvoz 23:54, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This spells out the syntax a bit (though I don't know whether it's standardized, and I remember Excel being far slipperier than it should be). I think you just wrap the cell value in single quotes, and then replace actual double-quotes inside the cell each with a pair of double quotes. This is one example output from Excel:
32.1,"He said ""What about Breakfast at Tiffany's""?"
33.3,"She said, ""I think I remember the film, and as I recall, I think, we both kind of liked it."""
34.5,"And I said, ""Well that's, the one thing we've got."""
On the other hand, a lot of people (including me) may not necessarily be willing to set up java and do the pivot table stuff, if it's not that important of a use-case. --Interiot 00:10, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'll work on that one. Its just a few changes, mostly to the GUI, so it hopefully will be done soon. Titoxd(?!?) 19:19, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Adding it to wannabe_kate might be useful short-term, but ultimately, fixed-IP scrapers have a good chance of getting blocked once(if) the toolserver comes back up. And the toolserver's database is just as slow as Wikipedia is at listing out every single detail of someone's contributions, so it can't do it either. So the best place for this may be in a standalone app. --Interiot 19:51, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, Flcelloguy's Tool can produce the CSV, but if it tried to do anything with it, it would run out of memory, because it keeps all the contributions it reads in its internal cache, so it can produce the edit counts and everything (which, admittedly, may not be the best idea, as doing a sequential read after all the contributions have been processed can save a lot of memory). So, a stand-alone app can read the CSV produced by Flcelloguy's, and play around with it any way it wants... Titoxd(?!?) 20:31, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An idea for your count tool...

[edit]

You know, I just got a dandy idea for your edit count tool. Instead of doing a full count every time someone asks, maybe you could store on the disk previous requests for a user, and just update on each request. I'll bet this would really cut down on the time necessary to run the query, let alone help the server. At worst, it would be a little off because of deleted material, but, should dire accuracy be needed, there could be a "update" button, or something like that. It may even be quicker to check each individual page, if it's still there. -Part Deux 02:06, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I keep thinking about that idea. You've got it right... it would be off a tiny bit for deleted edits (or maybe off by a lot if someone spends all their time tagging things with db), so it'd need some fine print and a purge cache button. *shrug* It kind of sucks though to have to spend time on an ostensibly "temporary" script that won't be used if the toolserver ever does come up. But yeah, this is something that clearly could be used (especially for RFA candidates and certified encountitisers). --Interiot 02:15, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, there's a couple issues... I'll probably disable the graphs and top-10 namespace summary for everyone but enwiki, because of German opt-in issues.

Wikiproject Automobiles Notification

[edit]

Hi Interiot, you were on the list of members at WikiProject Automobiles and we are introducing a new way of listing members, as the old list was becoming too long. Our new method involves having all of our members in a category.

To add yourself to the category just add the userbox to your user page by putting Wiki Auto Project where you want the userbox. Alternatively if you don't like the userbox you can add to your userpage.

If you no longer wish to be a member of the project, simply don't add the userbox or category, there's no pressure. Thanks for your time, James086Talk | Contribs 04:02, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Spam fighting tool

[edit]

I’d like to request a new spam-fighting tool... and I figured you were the guy to ask! (if not, feel free to laugh at me)

When researching complex long-term spam I find myself often searching though history logs looking for who/when a particular EL was introduced. When an article has 100s or 1000s of edits this can be quite difficult. I’d really like to be able to supply a string of text (the link) and have a program search the history for me.

I can see this being done in fairly short process.

  1. Load the oldid list from the history into an array[].
  2. Find the midway point, check for $string.
If it’s there, we know it was added before, if not, it was added after.
  3. Repeat the previous step using the midpoint and either the first/last edit, until the first oldid with $string is found.
  4. Grab and dump oldid/diff link.

To prevent timeout, each cycle could be run and results could be printed separately.

Is this feasible? ---J.S (T/C) 17:49, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's a similar discussion above, which ended without me committing to do any work on it. :) Yeah, it's definitely feasible. I even heard a hint on IRC that there might be a .exe floating around that may do this already. So far though, I haven't gotten the urge up to write this tool myself yet... I'm still doing these by hand as well (it's O(log n), and as you said, n is usually a a couple hundred or a couple thousand, so it's doubtful there will be a point where it's not possible to do these by hand... Binary_search#Performance says it takes 13 checks to find a change among 5000 edits, so it's not as difficult as it may seem. If you change the history limit to show 5000 entries, it goes a little quicker. *shrug*). --Interiot 17:57, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's still anoyingly tedious when you need to check 5-6 articles. /me shrugs
Hmmm... Now that I spell out how it could be done, I might be able to do it in PHP. I just don't have alot of experience dealing with complicated text→array imports like this. Is there an easy way to get a oldid list from the mediawiki software or do I need to strip it from the HTML output? ---J.S (T/C) 18:19, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No no, use query.php which outputs in various data formats including raw PHP, eg. XML, PHP. --Interiot 18:23, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Phew... I was haveing flashbacks to making a script to strip stats from the high-score list on runescape! Thanks, ---J.S (T/C) 18:29, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
