Gangs of Wasseypur Part-1 (stylized as Gangs of वासेपुर) is an Indian crime film co-written, produced and directed by Anurag Kashyap. The film centers around power struggles, politics and vengeance between three crime families. The film features an ensemble cast with Manoj Bajpai, Richa Chadda, Tigmanshu Dhulia in the major roles.

The film is first of the two parts of the crime saga.It was shot as a single film with budget constraints in mind and was screened back-to-back at the 2012 Cannes Directors' Fortnight.[1][2][3][4] The commercial release of the two part series in the Indian market has been separated by a gap of little more than a month, each part measuring roughly 150 minutes. The story of part one spans from the early 1940s to late 1990s while part two continues till 2009. The film received an "Adults Only" certification from the Indian Censor Board but is still too explicit for Indian standards as it portrayed realistic lingo and violence as it exists in some parts of India's rural villages.[5] The films songs are a unique and noticeable mix of local slang's and traditional Indian folk songs that tend to be philosophical and liberal with its heavy use of sexual innuendos.

Part one was released on June 22, 2012 on 1000 theatre screens across India. It was released on July 25 in France and on June 28 in the Middle East & UAE but was banned in Kuwait and Qatar.[6][7]Anurag Kashyap was unable to release part one of the film in Dhanbad where the movie is actually set but he plans to promote part two in the region as he has acquired the necessary permission.[8]

Introduction of Wasseypur and Dhanbad

[edit]

The narration describes the history and nature of Wasseypur, a pre-dominantly Sunni Muslim village which used to exist on the outskirts of Dhanbad before its merger with Dhanbad. Pre-independence, the entire Dhanbad region (including Wasseypur) formed a part of the Bengal state, post-independence the region was merged with Bihar and today the region forms a part of Jharkhand. The village has been historically ruled by the Qureshi Muslims, a sub-caste of animal butchers who are feared by the non-qureshi Muslims in Wasseypur and Dhanbad by extension.

During the British Raj, the British seized the farm lands of Dhanbad for coal thus began the business of coal mining in Dhanbad. The region was a hotbed of the faceless local dacoit Sultana Qureshi who robbed British trains in the night and thus holds some patriotic value for the locals.

Circa 1940s

[edit]

Shahid Khan (Jaideep Ahlawat), a Pathan, overhears some village men gossip about the whereabouts of the faceless dacoit Sultana, a Qureshi. Some claim that he was imprisoned in Kala Paani while others think he was hanged by the British. Unknown to Shahid, the man spreading the rumours is in fact Sultana himself. In 1941, taking advantage of the mysteriousness of Sultana, Shahid Khan impersonates the dacoits identity and begins robbing the British trains. The Qureshi clans eventually find out and order the banishment of Shahid Khan, his family and his friend Farhan (Piyush Mishra) from Wasseypur village. They settle down in Dhanbad where Shahid begins work as a labourer in a coal mine. One day while working in the mine, Shahid receives a message from a family friend that his wife was experiencing complications during childbirth. A worried Shahid requests the mines muscle-man to grant him a leave to attend to his wife but an argument between them ensures that Shahid is unable to reach home in time only to find his wife bleed to death from childbirth leaving him with his newborn son. Enraged, Shahid kills the muscle-man. In 1947, Independent India begins to assert its authority over itself. The British coal mines are sold to Indian industrialists and Ramadhir Singh (Tigmanshu Dhulia) receives a few coal-mines in the Dhanbad region. He hires Shahid as the new muscle-man of the coal mine who terrorizes the local population to seize their lands and extract compliance.

One rainy night, Ramadhir arrives at Shahid's house and eavesdrops on a conversation between Shahid and his cousin where Shahid reveals his ambitions of taking over the coal mines. An enraged Ramaadhir leaves but forgets his umbrella inside Shahid's house. Singh immediately orders Shahid to board the mid night train to Varanasi to meet Yadav. In a room in Varanasi, Yadav arrives and kills the unsuspecting Shahid Khan. Back home in Dhanbad, Farhan finds Ramadhir's umbrella near the door, concluding that Ramadhir eavesdropped on their conversation and has sent Shahid to Varanasi to be murdered. He flees from the place with Shahid's son Sardar in the nick of time as Ehsaan Qureshi (Vipin Sharma), another associate of Ramaadhir Singh shows up too late for killing them. An unsuccessful Ehsaan lies to Singh that Shahid's family has been murdered and buried. Sardar grows along with Asghar (Jameel Khan) and learns the truth about his fathers death upon which he shaves his head vowing not to grow it until Ramadhir singh is dead.

Circa 1950–60

[edit]

Ramaadhir Singh is establishing himself in the coal mining business by cultivating the mafia. Noting the dire situations of the coal labourers, Delhi Nationalises the coal mines and establishes a system of checks and balances through the creation of welfare associations and trade unions. As the leader of a trade union, Singh starts misusing his position and power by turning it into a mafia organisation. The labourers are threatened into giving a substantial portion of their income to Ramaadhir's henchmen. Singh encourages the labourers to dip the coal ores into water to show a constant production while he sells the hidden portion of the coal production in the black market.

Circa Early and Mid 1970s

[edit]

A mature Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpai) with his cousin Asghar start a transport business whereas an elder Ramadhir Singh becomes a well known politician who uses the mafia to run his coal mine business with an iron fist. Sardar gets married to Nagma Khatoon (Richa Chadda).

Sardar and his kin start hijacking Ramaadhir's coal trucks mid transit. Due to nationalisation, the govt takes ramaadhirs coal mines and hands it over to Coal India. SP Sinha, the chief of Coal India, that oversees the coal production is confronted by JP Singh demanding an answer for the partial payments. Sinha informs that the coal trucks have not been reaching their final destination. Not knowing that Sardar has been robbing his trucks, Ramaadhir suspects the foul play to Sinha and murders him. Post Sinha's murder, Ramaadhir starts being feared by everyone in Dhanbad.

A pregnant Nagma Khatoon confronts Sardar Khan and a prostitute inside a brothel and chases him away. Later, nagma gives birth to Danish but gets pregnant immediately afterwards. Unable to have sex with a pregnant Nagma, Sardar confesses his sexual frustrations with his kins. At dinner, Nagma gives her consent to Sardar to sleep with other women but with the condition that he won't bring them home or dishonour the family name.

Asghar joins his transport business with JP singh on a contractual basis where the later finances the fuel. Sardar becomes the driver of JP Singh while Asghar sells the fuel in the black market. JP Singh gets elected as a minister and uses his influence to open five petrol pump stations on his relatives name. Sardar, Farhan and Ashgar rob one of these petrol pump stations and escape. Later, the trio hijack and rob two train bogeys destined to Ramaadhir Singh. Sardar illegally usurps Ramadhir's land leading and forces Ramaadhir to confront him for talks. The trio leave taking Ramaadhir's umbrella with them which he had forgotten in Shahid's house back in the 1940s with intentions to reveal their true identity as avengers of Shahid's murder.

The meeting between Sardar and Ramaadhir ends in a scuffle with the later realising that Sardar Khan is in fact the son of Shahid khan who Singh killed a long time ago. Ramaadhir releases his anger on JP for being careless in employing a sworn enemy. Sardar and Asghar are sent for jail time for hitting JP. Ramaadhir singh confronts Ehsaan Qureshi for lying to him about the execution of Shahid's family in the 40s.

Circa Early 1980s

[edit]

The emergency has just ended. Sardar and Asghar are still in jail where they meet and employ a bomb maker from Punjab to help them escape from prison. Danish Khan, now a boy, smuggles bomb making material to his father inside a tiffin box. Eventually, the prison wall is blasted open and 21 prisoners along with Sardar and Ashgar escape from jail. While hiding in Dhanbad, Sardar notices a Bengali Hindu girl named Durga (Reema Sen) working as a maid in a household. Earlier kidnapped by Sultan Qureshi from Asansol, West Bengal to be employed in a brothel but she escapes and takes refuge inside a masjid and finally finds work as a maid in Dhanbad. Both Sardar and Durga take fancy to each other and she ends up loosing her virginity to him. Away from Nagma for too long, Sardar contemplates about taking Durga as his second wife. Back at Nagma household, the police drop in at midnight enquiring about the absconding Sardar Khan. Asghar informs Nagma that Sardar has finally taken Durga as his second wife leaving Farhan very angry and helpless at Nagmas situation. Meanwhile Faizal Khan, still a boy and his friend outsmart an ice cream seller and rob him. He watches a girl plead with the guy at the theater gate to let watch a movie for free.

Wasseypur has merged with Dhanbad where the Qureshi goons kidnap, rape, murder and spread terror among the non-qureshi Muslims who approach Qamar Makhdoom for help. Makhdoom tries to talk to Sultan Qureshi but is instead ridiculed and made to go away. A helpless Makhdoom approaches Sardar Khan for help. Using bombs, Sardar and his kins beat back the Qureshi men. Later, Sardar kills a muscle-man belonging to JP Singh and discards his chopped body inside a Qureshi slaughter house which Sultan decides to ignore. Meanwhile, Sardar is trying to get his hands on improved home-made arsenal to launch hit-and-run attacks on the Qureshi men. They find a man who claims to make workable guns using a truck's steering wheel but they prove to fail in actual practice.

During the festival of Muharram, both Shias and Sunnis are out mourning including the Qureshi clan. Sardar uses the opportunity to lauch a major bomb attack on many Qureshi shops and houses. The word spreads about Sardar's raids and the people start fearing Sardar more than the Qureshis.

Sardar is back living with his first wife Nagma who is pregnant again. He initiates sex with her but she refuses and tells him to satisfy his urge with other women as he always has. This angers Sardar who blames Nagma for purposely getting pregnant as an excuse to refuse sex with him. She asks him whether he is not spending the nights with Durga because he has gotten her pregnant too which triggers Sardar to leave Nagma leaving her devastated. At the Durga household, Durga has just given birth to Definite Khan. When Sardar arrives, she confronts him with anger and sobs that she does not want to end up as a baby making machine to him like Nagma Khatoon has.

Sardar arrives back at the Nagma household where she has given birth to yet another son. He gives some money to Danish and Faizal and leaves the house without meeting Nagma or his new born son. Nagma and her two boys dress with in a Burqa and watch Sardar and Durga buy a crockery item in secrecy which breaks Faizal's heart and he runs away. Nagma begins withdrawing interest in her teenage boys and tells Faizal to drop out from school to find a job. An angry Faizal heads to the Durga household and tries to vandalize her door before Durga chases him away with Bengali expletives.

Ramaadhir Singh, noticing that Sardar has abandoned him first wife and kids, tries to reach out to the family through Danish by giving him a thousand rupees. Nagma gets enraged and beats Danish for taking the money. In a room, Nagma breaks down in front of Farhan while both of them appear to get closer. A thirsty Faizal wakes up in the middle of the night and takes a peek inside her mothers room to find Farhan and Nagma about to have sex. An outraged Faizal slams his hand on the door before storming out of the house. Even though Nagma and Farhan never ended up having sex, the always emotionally restrained Farhan whips his back with a leather strap as punishment. Faizal spends several days on the street where he withdraws from life, starts smoking Ganja (Marijuana), eventually becoming a regular user. Faizal returns home a changed boy. Farhan and Faizal never talk about the incident again, but their relation will never be what it used to be.

Circa Mid and Late 1980s

[edit]

Asghar is eating a samosa on the streets when a Jeep with four drunks pass by him and kidnap a girl from wasseypur. Sardar Khan takes a rally through Dhanbad warning the people and Ramaadhir Singh of terrible consequences if the girl is not returned safe. Singh confronts JP and orders him to find out who the kidnappers were. After a wide search, the four men and the girl are finally located. Two men are executed while the other two are set free by JP. The girl returns home and informs that two of her kidnappers were still free. Sardar khan tracks the other two men of which one is a Hindu and the other is a Muslim. He brutally kills the Hindu in front of his Muslim friend. The remaining lone kidnapper is forced to marry the girl he kidnapped at a Mahr of one lakh which is paid by Ramaadhir Singh. Sensing Sardar's increasing clout, Ramaadhir calls his old associate Ehsaan Qureshi who brokers a meeting between Sultan Qureshi and Ramaadhir Singh where the two decide to become allies against their common enemy, Sardar Khan. Sultan asks Ramaadhir for modern automatic weapons which the later promises to give.

Circa 1990s

[edit]

Meanwhile, Farhan starts doing contractual business with the coal mines by providing river sand he steals in the night. By now, Sardar Khan has successfully driven out the Qureshi clan from Wasseypur through relentless bombings of their localities and has become the prime mafia don and the most feared man in whole of Dhanbad. With too many random individuals selling coal in the open market, Sardar shifts his business focus from coal to stealing iron ore. Danish khan joins in the family business who uses homeless kids to assemble scrap metal from all over the region. A failed attack from Sultan Qureshi leaves Danish with a minor injury and Sardar fumed. In the hospital, Sardar and Nagma meet and reconcile. Sardar finds Ramaadhir and warns him of terrible consequences if anything ever happens to a member of his family.

An enraged Durga doesn't approve of Sardar's proposal of living together with Nagma and tells him to get lost. A mature Faizal Khan with a disturbed childhood watches and weeps in a movie theatre themed on motherly love. His attention is caught by a girl in the theatre who seems familiar. Faizal becomes seriously addicted to Bollywood movies as he starts behaving, talking and dressing like Bollywood characters.

Sardar asks Danish to meet a person called Yadav in Varanasi who sells automatic guns for two lacs cheap. Faizal interrupts and offers to go instead of Danish. In Varanasi, Faizal buys six guns from Yadav while the later leaves immediately. Faizal inscribes his initials "FK" on one of the guns with the door keys. While returning to Dhanbad in a train, a team of police officers board the compartment and start interrogating Faizal about his whereabouts. They find the guns in Faizal's bag and send him to jail.

Sardar watches a duo of amateur men rob the Allahabad Bank at gun point. At home, Danish and Sardar agree that crime was no longer limited to large criminal organisations. They agree to legitimize their business by seizing a lake belonging to a local temple and charge a commission on fish sellers who make a catch in that lake. During a random round of making collections, Danish is attracted to Shama Parveen in a shop who is the sister of Sultan Qureshi. After attending a prayer at the mosque, Danish approaches a Qureshi man and suggests making peace between the two families. Ehsaan Qureshi also agrees and decides to rid the two families of animosity by getting Danish Khan married to Shama Parveen.

Meanwhile, Faizal gets released from jail and meets Yadav yet again to buy guns. Yadav puts the guns on the table while Faizal picks one of the guns for inspection. Faizal gives out a repressed shock when he finds his initials "FK" on the gun revealing to him that the police and Yadav had orchestrated his arrest during his last trip to Varanasi. Faizal kills Yadav with the gun, still unknown to him that Yadav is the same guy who had killed his grandfather in the late 40s. In the return train, Faizal hides the guns in the roof of the toilet compartment so when the police arrives to check him, they find nothing. Faizal returns at a later date and retrieves the weapons from the roof.

Ramaadhir singh confronts and express his displeasure with Sultan Qureshi over his sisters wedding to his enemy's son Danish. At the nikah ceremony, Sultan warns Shama Parveen with death if she agrees to the nikah with Danish but she goes ahead with it anyway.

Sultan Qureshi and his men start spying on Sardar's whereabouts, tracking his every move. They start hiring spies all around the place. While smoking Ganja with his friends, Faizal reveals to them that his father Sardar would be travelling without security the next day. Late night, while Faizal is still asleep, his friend who turns out to be a spy calls up the Qureshis and passes this bit of information on Sardar to them.

Sardar leaves home alone and reaches the Durga household to give them their expense allowance. Definite khan answers the door to take the money instead of Durga while Sardar leaves. Durga turns out to be yet another Qureshi spy. She stands behind the curtain holding a phone and informs the listener on the other end that Sardar has just left her house. The Qureshi men follow Sardars car and when the later stops at a petrol pump to refuel, he notices an armed Sultan and his men approaching him on bikes in his rear mirror. They start shooting immediately while Sardar ducks in the car for cover. The Qureshi men put several close rounds through the car window ensuring a precise & unmistakable hit after which they escape. Astonishingly, Sardar opens the car door and stands up revealing multiple bullet wounds, one directly on his head and steps out with his gun cocked, loaded and ready to fire but ultimately, he collapses to his death on a ferry cycle.

Transport

[edit]

The total length of roads in Uttarakhand is 28,508.58 km in which national highways contribute 1,327.60 km and state highways contribute 1,542.78 km.[15] State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) which has also been reorganized in Uttarakhand as "Uttarakhand Transport Corporation" is a major constituent of transport system in the state. The Corporation which began to work on 31 October 2003, provides services on interstatel as well as nationalized routes .As of 2012, approximately 1000 buses are being plied by "Uttarakhand Transport Corporation" on 35 nationalized routes along with many other non nationalized routes. There are also private transport operators operating approximately 3000 buses on non-nationalised routes along with a few interstatel routes of Uttarakhand and neighbouring state of U.P.[16]For travelling locally, the state, like most of the country has auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws. In addition, remote towns and villages in the hills are connected to important road junctions and bus routes by a vast network of crowded share jeeps that crisscrosses the state.[17]

The state air transport is not very well developed with efforts to develop Naini Saini Airport in Pithoragarh district, Chaniyalisaur in Uttarkashi and Gauchar in Chamoli district. The major airport in the state is the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun and this airport is well connected to Delhi.Another domestic airport is located in the Kumaon region of Pantnagar.Plans are on to launch helipad service in Pant Nagar and Jolly Grant Airports and other important tourist destinations like Ghangharia and Hemkund Sahib in Uttaranchal to provide easy commutation service to the tourist in the state.[18]

Uttarakhand has railway tracks with a total length of about 345km.[15]The railways, being the cheapest mode of transport, is most popular. The most important railway station in Uttarakhand is the one at Kathgodam which is 35 kilometers away from Nainital. The last terminus of broad gauze line of North East Railways is Kathgodam railway station. This railway station connects Nainital with Delhi, Dehradun and Howrah. Other famous railway stations of Uttarakhand are at Lalkuan and Haldwani.Dehradun Railway Station is a railhead of the Northern Railways.[19]

Reviews

Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! garnered positive response from almost every critic.

  • Rajeev Masand of CNN IBN gave it 3 out of 5 and stated, "Watch it because it’s a film that respects your intelligence. And films like that are hard to find."[20]
  • Khalid Mohammed in Hindustan Times gave it 3.5 and concluded that, "Granted Oye..oye has its downers but at least it has the guts to be zany-`n’-zappy. Way to balle balle, thumka maar ke. ... Manu Rishi, as the sidekick, is the surprise packet; he was also responsible for the dialogue that’s as delicious as chicken tikka. And you once again get lucky with Abhay Deol. This actor knows his acting mutton chops and does justice to a succulent role."[21]
  • Reviewer Noyon Jyoti Parasara too gave the film 3.5 out of 5 and expressed, "Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! is one film which is going to leave you delighted. Although the ending is debatable. OLLO is well directed and Dibakar Banerjee can take a bow for that. Performance wise this is an Abhay Deol movie. But the highlight of the movie is definitely Paresh Rawal. Brilliant.Neetu Chandra has a smaller role but makes an impact. Manu Rishi is good as Abhay's friend. Special mention is deserved by Manjot Singh, who plays the younger Lucky. Enjoy this one along with popcorns or coffee. The extra money spent will be justified!"[22]
