Chromakopia is the upcoming seventh[a] studio album by American rapper and producer Tyler, the Creator.[1] It is scheduled to be released on Monday, October 28, 2024 at 6:00 a.m ET, through Columbia Records.[2][3]

Background

[edit]

On October 16, 2024, Tyler, The Creator posted a teaser on Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter titled "St. Chroma", expected to be the first song of the record, due to the caption, "1. st chroma" on Instagram.[4] The teaser video is initially monochromatic, as Tyler directs people into a shipping container. He then blows up the container with a detonator, adding color to the video. At the end of the video, the album's name, Chromakopia, is revealed. A day later, on October 17, Tyler revealed the cover art for the album and its scheduled release date of October 28, which falls on a Monday.[2] In a 2023 interview with Nardwuar, Tyler expressed criticism of the current trend of releasing music on Fridays, suggesting that it encourages "passive listening." He remarked, "I think it's a lot of passive listening [on the weekend]. If you put it out during the week... you really have that time to ‘dive in’ and really listen."[5]

On October 21, he released the lead single for Chromakopia, "Noid", alongside a music video. It was teased that it would be the third song in the track order. [4]

On October 22, Tyler released a limited-edition vinyl sale announcement video titled "Chromakopia Vinyl", which also teases three songs expected to appear on the record.[6] On October 23, Tyler released a tour announcement video titled "Chromakopia Tour". It showed at the end he would be touring alongside Lil Yachty and Paris Texas.[7] A few hours later around 8:30 PM, Tyler announced the time the album would be releasing, 6 AM EST.[8]

On October 26, he released a music video for "Thought I Was Dead", which was teased to be the 11th track on Chromakopia.[9]

The album is speculated to be based on the story of Chroma the Great from the novel The Phantom Tollbooth, a powerful conductor whose orchestra creates the colors of the world.[10]

Teasers

[edit]
The Chromakopia logo, using the Poleno Semi Bold font, with horn-like accents.

The first teaser is the speculated music video for "St. Chroma”, although this is not confirmed. The video has a sepia filter for the majority of the video. It depicts a masked Tyler leading a line of 10 men, where he steps out of the line and directs the men into a green shipping container with the Chromakopia logo on the front. When all the pieces men are inside, Tyler presses a button and detonates the container, and the sepia filter disappears.[11] At the end of the teaser, it reveals a green background, with the name of the album, Chromakopia in its respective font.

The second teaser is the music video for "Noid", the lead single for the album, and the third song of the record. It borrows the same sepia filter from "St. Chroma" as well as the same masked character that Tyler portrays. In the video, Tyler runs through crowds of people who become erratic towards him, bearing unsettling grins. A crazed woman (played by actress Ayo Edebiri) runs toward Tyler, moving violently, taking pictures and waving a gun around. There are rapid cuts between Tyler dancing in a room with flashing lights, watching as a car follows him while he is driving and peeking through a curtain, terrified. At the end of the video, Tyler runs around an empty lot, where his shadow seems to be moving independently of him, before falling to his knees and screaming. The song's lyrics talk about Tyler's fear and annoyance of people trying to find out things about his personal life, such as the paparazzi or interviewers.[12] In his 2023 song "Sorry Not Sorry" on his deluxe album Call Me If You Get Lost: The Estate Sale, Tyler talks about the same idea.

The third teaser is the announcement of Chromakopia vinyl. In the announcement video, it shows Tyler next to a table with the vinyl in a record player and the vinyl jacket in the same sepia filter found in "Noid" and "St. Chroma". Tyler presses play on the record player and an unnamed song starts playing. Tyler starts dancing to the music, playing air guitar. While he is dancing, a picture frame with the cover art on the wall behind him falls, making the video become colorized and another unnamed song starts playing. Tyler dances more heavily for the song, before bumping into the vinyl jacket, returning the sepia filter and starting the third, and final unnamed song for the video. Tyler simply places his hand on his chest before the video ends.

The fourth teaser is the announcement of the Chromakopia tour. In the background, there are men marching into a military transport plane out of the Chromakopia trailer seen in "St. Chroma". Tyler is seen taking three men out of the line of people marching into the plane: Lil Yachty, and the members of Paris Texas band and follows them near the camera seeming frustrated, (presumably) checking three people's passports. When the line of people are finished marching into the plane Tyler tries blowing up the plane with a detonator, but fails. After four clicks, the detonator succeeds and the plane blows up.

The eleventh track “Thought I Was Dead” was released on YouTube on October 26,2024. It shows Tyler The Creator standing on top of a plane dancing and performing the song as his masked self is inside the plane disappointed about his verses. The song is a diss to the white man from Odd Future. The video ends with Tyler’s masked self walking out of the plane and the credits (like always) remain saying Chromakopia.

The fifth teaser was uploaded to Tiktok exclusively on 10/27/24 with a 9:16 photo of the unedited St. Chroma thumbnail. Tyler talks about problems in his life caused by time going by.

Marketing

[edit]

Marketing for Chromakopia has been spotted around the state of Texas as two large Kenworth W900L green trucks with green shipping containers on the back with the Chromakopia logo, identical to the shipping container featured in the "St. Chroma" music video. The trucks are known as the "Chromakopia Trucking Company".[13] The trucks starting point was in the city of Tyler, Texas, parked near the Tyler Public Library.[14] The two trucks then departed the location, and drove in opposite directions, one truck going towards Houston and one truck going towards Dallas. In location, the Houston truck has been spotted parked near the Eclectic Menagerie Park[15] and the Dallas truck has been spotted near the intersection between San Jacinto and Leonard.[16] The Chromakopia website, at the time of writing, has shown that the westbound truck's next location will be Los Angeles, California and the eastbound truck's next location will be Columbus, Ohio.[13] The trucks have also been vandalized, likely from fans that have spotted the vehicles.[17]

Tour

[edit]

Tyler, The Creator has announced a world tour in support of the album. Promoted by AEG Presents, the tour will feature special guests Lil Yachty and Paris Texas, with 39 dates across North America, including the U.S. and Canada, 18 dates in Europe and the UK, and 7 shows scheduled in Oceania, covering Australia and New Zealand. The tour will take place throughout 2025.[7]
