Earliest tput
[edit]References to tput before 1986 are vague - it could have been written as late as 1985, though 1986 seems late, given the SVR3 and O'Reilly comments. pcurses does not mention it, and that dates from the end of 1986.
There was a similar idea kurses implemented in 1985-1987, submitted to volume 8 of mod.sources (March 20, 1987), written by Jonathan Bowen and Marc Ries. It contains a comment that "Kurses (aka, curse) was published to the net several years ago." Here is a description and here is a file for "curse" by Jonathan Bowen with a date for February 20, 1985. Except that it prefixes all of the capability names with "-", it is similar to tput Tedickey (talk) 20:11, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
I've never edited a Wikipedia page until this weekend, when I put my name on this page. I worked at Bell Labs 1981-1985, including in the Commands group in the UNIX development department. In addition to some flags I added to existing commands (include the ls command), the only command I truly introduced from scratch was tput. I probably still have a copy of that paper in the attic somewhere ... Yesterday I added my name to the page, and it was reverted and I was sent a message, something about vandalism. Anyway, sorry, I wont do it again (but I did develop the tput command - Oran Bodner). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ojbodner (talk • contribs) 20:42, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
- You need a reliable source which other editors can verify. Talk-page comments are neither TEDickey (talk) 20:48, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
There, amid the dust, mildew and silverfish in the attic, I found 2 papers documenting the new tput command, dated March 3rd and April 12th, 1983. Scanned the cover pages to my LinkedIn profile. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ojbodner (talk • contribs) 19:56, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
Tput vs tput
[edit]Shouldn't tput be capitalized? •USER•Androo123•TALK• —Preceding comment was added at 20:12, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
- That's debatable. For accuracy, "tput" (all lowercase) is the proper name. It's not uncommon to use a leading capital for the first word in a sentence, but is uncommon to change the case away from proper naming when embedded in a sentence. Tedickey (talk) 20:28, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
tput man expansion
[edit]In the man section of this article, the macro for man is not expanding to the correct url:
===Manual pages===
* {{man|1|tput}}
The above is expanding to: http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799//tput.html
and the correct URL is: http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799/utilities/tput.html
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Erflungued (talk) 07:52, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
- Looks like Template:Man without explicit source argument behaves as if
SUS
were specified, and it expands to Template:Man/SUS which requires to use one ofcu
,bd
,sh
, orrat
instead of the usual section numbers. Someone already mentioned this should be fixed in template on its talk page but no one did that. I'm not sufficiently familiar with the language to fix the template, but in the mean time I changed{{man|1|tput}}
here to{{man|cu|tput|SUS}}
which works correctly. — mwgamera (talk) 13:25, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
Dead links
[edit]Hello, editors. These references are dead, their links don't work anymore:
- http://gatekeeper.hpl.hp.com/archive/pub/usenet/comp.sources.unix/volume7/tput.Z
- http://gatekeeper.hpl.hp.com/archive/pub/usenet/comp.sources.unix/volume7/tput2.Z

Maybe should they be replaced? --MisterSanderson (talk) 00:51, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
- probably (there are equivalents to these) TEDickey (talk) 02:17, 29 January 2017 (UTC)
