Why no mention of Dennis Waakop Reijers-Fraaij in the article?

[edit]

Maybe I missed it but - Why is there no word of him? He clearly came out (as well as Tiesto) and admitted he is/was behind Tiesto's success from 1997-today, meaning he composed his music for him.

http://www.hifi.nl/artikel/1939/De_muziekbeleving_van..._Dennis_Waakop_Reijers.html

(English translation from Dutch)

Tiësto

"My first serious remixes I made the late nineties, when Tiësto came into the scene. I learned to know him around the summer of 1998. We knew each other yet, but a friend of mine who worked in a music case had tipped me to Tijs. They asked me as a test if I have a remix request for him could do. He was already known, the end of'97 had already been on Inner City and in'98 he was a headliner. I stood by the test fairly quickly and then we are fairly intensive work together. " -- Dennis Waakop Reijers

'The Band'

"In 2001 we Tiësto first album together produced. We are working since then with two on the production and compositions. Behind them is still a small group that takes care of all the surrounding issues. But with just two, we are responsible for the numbers. Tiësto called us' The Band '. In my contract states that I have for others or myself can do things, but in practice I can not stand. Furthermore, we are a strong team together, that the sin is not to use the combined forces. " -- Dennis Waakop Reijers

"Most people know me. I am totally unknown, except in the production world of course...I find it really nice in the shadow of Tiësto States. I am left alone and can do without me someone will ask for a signature. Of course, sometimes I get called fanmail, or requests from other artists." -- Dennis Waakop Reijers

Now even Tiesto admits this during an interview:

As you’re always on the road, are you creating your own track edits?

"Definitely. In the last year, I’ve been on the road mostly on the weekends, mostly in Europe. And then the rest of the week I’m in the studio. I’ve been working with a producer for seven years, [including on] the last album. His name is Dennis Waakop-Reijers. We work great together as a team. He couldn’t make the music without me and I couldn’t make the music without him." -- Tiësto

What is his childhood nickname?

[edit]

The article says "now known simply as "Tiësto", an alias which is a twist on his childhood nickname" but the reference does not state what the nickname is. I can see some similarity between Tijs and Tiësto, though. In doubt, I would remove the reference and replace it with a 'needs reference'. --Elecnix (talk) 17:53, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I found the source that originally sourced the information, but still could not find out an exact nickname. ASOTMKX (talk) 01:36, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

This article has a lot of broken links. I've tried to fix some of them but this is harder than for most articles, I think because some of the sites referenced are under construction/discontinued. If the broken links can't be replaced with other references, we'll have to delist as a good article, Tom B (talk) 23:19, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This album is only mentioned after the fact, with no mention of it during the actual time of release. This should be updated. MXVN (talk) 10:57, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GA Reassessment

[edit]
This discussion is transcluded from Talk:Tiësto/GA3. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the reassessment.

The main criteria it fails is sourcing/verfiability. Currently has a lot of broken links, i noted this on talk page a little while ago - have tried to fix but more difficult than normal as the sites originally used seem to be discontinued. Article also has style tag. Tom B (talk) 16:33, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Minor typo

[edit]

The section relating to Tiësto's current era of music development (correctly Kaleidoscope) is spelled wrong, lacking a D. As minor as that is, it's noticeable. I wouldn't waste space on the talk page if it wasn't protected. Please fix this, and thanks for your time. Aexis Rai (talk) 22:07, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Silly, it wouldn't been faster to fix it yourself than post about it here. You do not need permission. 64.85.243.248 (talk) 16:36, 10 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Allure

I think that there should be more information regarding his alias Allure. Either that or create an article for it. He has now released an album under the alias but it isn't mentioned anywhere. 64.196.17.59 (talk) 14:56, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That is true i agree with that opinion, to say the least Tiesto has in fact released a number of tracks under the ‘Allure’ alias in his dj career, none of which are on this page.

On Aug 1, 2011 the video Tiësto feat. Kay - Work Hard, Play Hard (AutoErotique Remix) tiesto's youtube channel notes that: 1. The Kaleidoscope World Tour was the biggest dj only tour in history, featuring over 150 dates across 6 continents and an estimated total live audience of over 1 million. 2. Tiësto feat. Kay - Work Hard, Play Hard is the world's first music video to be created entirely using fan footage from live shows.

Not entirely true. See WP:YOUTUBE. A more apt rationale for this would be WP:RS in the sense that it comes from a first party source. Coming from a first party source as opposed to a third party source, the claim is rather dubious. ⒺⓋⒾⓁⒼⓄⒽⒶⓃ 18:28, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I just registered here because this annoyed me that much. I didn't know I needed to be here 4 days and have 10 edits to fix this, but oh well.

The section consists of many unsourced claims and bad English. I would be grateful if someone removed/changed this section. Also, the section title shouldn't be in italics.

Examples:

The album is trance style, the style Tiesto has left behind, and in which the title refers to, "A kiss the past," a joy for Tiesto's old and new fans.
Tiesto always use this song for the end of his performances, and possibly the one that puts more energy into his concerts right now.

Lukini (talk) 23:04, 16 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Just go ahead and change it yourself. No need to wait, since it is viable. The grammar is HORRIBLE, I agree.
By the way Lukini, I used 'As At' for a reason. it implies at that time, as we don't know the future for 2013 results. It's not gramatically incorrect.Danceking5 (talk) 09:19, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What I want to remove: Steve Forte Rio as an alias

What I want to add: "Despite common thinking that the anagram of “Steve Forte Rio” is “Tiesto Forever”, this alias does not belong to Tijs Verwest. The latter co-wrote with Steve “A New Dawn” single, and short tracks from “In Search of Sunrise” compilations, and the remix for JES. Everything other under the name of Steve Forte Rio has nothing to do with the name Tiësto."

Note that what I want to add is taken straight from the source below.

There needs to be an edit for the sentence with the 10th reference. There is no such thing as trance house or house trance. Tiesto used to play trance, and now plays commercial house. With all of the genre confusion these days I feel that this page should at least get the information correct.

Tiesto played very little German Trance back in the day. What you think is Trance is usually Eurodance. And yes, there is such a thing as Trouse. (Trance House). There is no such thing as House Trance, you are correct about that. The term Trouse emerged in the 1990s.Danceking5 (talk) 09:25, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Gossip Column - Citation Request

[edit]

Added many citation requests. 2 Months available for editors to back up Original Research. This page is filled like a gossip column, with what seems like written by loyal tiesto minions, collecting his sweat in a jar. Please provide citations if inserting data to this page.Danceking5 (talk) 22:41, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone please monitor this Nick guy stalking me. He's a new follower, beginning to revert all my edits. Nick, I hate to break it to you, but Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that only allows CITED published material. The reason I am inserting these requests for citation, is to prove that the infomration is or isn't ORIGINAL RESEARCH. I'm sorry but this is just how Wikipedia works, regardless if you think the data is contentious or not. Even the DJs themselves, that I am referencing, aren't allowed to have their minions come on here and create a gossip column for them. Wikipedia is not a gossip column written by fans of DJs, who want to start a career in journalism. Wikipedia is also not a free advertisement mechanism to be used by 'dj followers' keeping tabs on their master. Also Nick, please stop editing in your sneaky way so I can't go and revert your work. It creates a lot of work for me to cut and paste each old section. Respect other peoples work. When you provide a citation, do not use this as an opportunity to delete all other citation requests in the paragraph. Please provide the citations for each sentence please. I will remind you Nick, that it is important that the data is legally sourced. Wikipedia technically might be sued otherwise, and none of us want this.
RE: DISCOGS AS A SOURCE. Discogs is a viable source, as a recording is technically published. However, discogs as a citation cannot be used as a makeshift source to support original research. Meaning if a writer fathoms delusions in his head, about a specific release, then publishes it on Wikipedia, the data has to clearly be accessible visually on discogs, and be absent of peacock minion terminology. What I mean is, the writing on Wikipedia could state: "John Doe released a CD titled Rave Mania in 1993. Then provide the citation. But if a DJ worshipper starts obsessively writing hype about their master, this ORIGINAL RESEARCH is not allowed - hence we are getting into gossip column territory. Wikipedia is not the National Enquirer.Danceking5 (talk) 23:45, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Request 1 October 2012

[edit]

The listed pronunciation of his stage name appears to be incorrect. It is shown as (/ˈtʃɛstoʊ/ CHES-toh; Dutch pronunciation: [cɛsto]). I don't know if that is the correct Dutch pronunciation (I don't think it is) but it is certainly not the pronunciation he uses (as can be seen on countless interviews/youtube videos). Please change the listed pronunciation to the correct pronunciation.

I would make the change myself but am not quite sure of how exactly it should be changed. Thanks, Jonnyh6 (talk) 07:58, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: as your request is vague. Please consult Help:IPA for Dutch and Afrikaans. —KuyaBriBriTalk 14:46, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I found the Dutch pronunciation: "Dutch pronunciation: [tiɛsto]" (http://www.tiestoblog.com/biography/) but unfortunately I am not familiar with English phonetics/phonemes and am only moderately familiar with Spanish phonetics/phonemes. In Spanish the correct pronunciation would be written /tjes-to/ I think (I am unsure of the dipthong). I know I'm still being a little vague but what I am asking is for someone who actually knows the IPA to change the listed pronunciation to the right one instead of the currently incorrect listed pronunciation. If I was an expert in the IPA, I would do it myself rather than ask here.

Jonnyh6 (talk) 02:37, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the IPA notations, but the Dutch still needs stress. --Mahmudmasri (talk) 03:43, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation

[edit]

A discussion moved from a talk page:

Tiësto

Hello there.

The transcription you stubbornly keep returning into the article is impossible from the point of view of the Dutch phonology. If Tiësto were to consist of three syllables, as you appear to falsely believe, the word would still be pronounced [tiˈjɛstoː], with a glide after the i. The pronunciation with a hiatus is impossible here from the point of view of the Dutch phonology. As the Dutch linguist Geert Booij points out in his book The Phonology of Dutch, "Two adjacent vowels within a Dutch prosodic word are very rare" (p. 65). Further on, "The inserted glide has the same properties with respect to backness and roundness as the preceding vowel... :

After unrounded front vowels:

dieet /diet/ 'diet' [dijet] bioscoop /biɔskop/ 'cinema' [bijɔskop]..." (p. 66).

Let's listen to native speakers pronouncing Tiësto here, here and here. Each and everyone of them clearly pronounces the DJ's artist name as a two syllable word. In other words, the letter i stands for the phoneme /j/ and not for the /i/. The /t/ and the /j/ phonemes together produce the [c] sound (it's present in the table by Carlos Gussenhoven from The Radboud University Nijmegen at the Journal of the International Phonetic Association online, see also the same sound in the Dutch word ketjap under that table.

I'm surprised you've been so tenacious about something concerning a language you don't even seem to be familiar with.

87.210.232.221 (talk) 11:46, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  1. 1 [ˈtjɛsto]
  2. 2 [tiˈje̞sto]
  3. 3 (Male from Netherlands) [tiˈjɛʂto]; (Female from China) [ˈtʲjɛsto]
These were the pronunciation in order from your links. The one you insist on transcribing is non-Dutch or at least written incorrectly. Clearly all of them don't pronounce the final vowel longly. Your transcription [ˈcɛstoː] does not suggest that it is correct especially for the final [oː] which appears like someone calling at him, "hey Tiestoooooooo, how are youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu," which is not the pronunciation in a normal situation. You can't shout out the loudest unless you change the proper pronunciation a little, like pronouncing Mahmud as [mæħˈmuːɔ̯d], rather than properly [mæħˈmuːd]; another example in a song someone shouting stay with me, 'cause every star that I see... [ste̞ːɪ̯ weːð me̞ːɪ̯   kʰʊ̈ˑz ˈɛvɹi stɑːɹ ðæːɾ aɪ̯ se̞ː], rather than [ste̞ɪ̯ wɪð miˑ   kʰɔˑz ˈɛvɹi stɑˑɹ ðæˑɾ aɪ̯ siˑ]. Anyway, did you notice that the third link had two careless pronunciations? That discussion reminded me of someone who posted to me pronunciations by Egyptians, arguing with me that those are proper citation for an ideal Egyptian pronunciation when their pronunciations were very unstable, they pronounced the same words differently each time!
  • The conclusion is that only the first two pronunciations appear to be correct and careful for Dutch. I couldn't see the page in the book you cited as I had to buy the book, but the general information available about the Dutch /t/+/j/ if their combination were to change their pronunciation, they would give either [tʲ] or [t͡ʃ], not [c]. --Mahmudmasri (talk) 15:06, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Annual Income

@SummerPhDv2.0: Can you clarify where exactly did it say that Tiesto's annual income is $38 million? I don't see the word "annual" nor "income" on the Forbes webpage. - TheMagnificentist (talk) 13:55, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The source cited is [10]. Click the title at the top of the page and it describes the list as "The World's 100 Highest-Paid Celebrities pulled in $5.1 billion pretax over the past 12 months...". An entry spells it out as "The top act in its niche, Bigbang took home $44 million in pretax earnings over the past year..."
"Pre-tax earnings over the past 12 months" is "annual income". - SummerPhDv2.0 14:30, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Godfather of EDM

[edit]

Do we really need to put this on the article? I'm curious to hear your opinion. I think that just because a website, in this case MTV.com, calls him the "Godfather of EDM" it doesn't mean he is widely known as such. The source doesn't even talk about Tiësto, he is just mencioned because he discovered Garrix and serves as his "mentor". It's the same as reading an article about Armin van Buuren and you find a line which reads "king of trance". It's all subjetive. So, unless reputed websites and music magazines like DJ Mag and Mixmag start a new poll asking who is the godfather of EDM, like they did with "Greatest DJ of All Time" and "the best DJ of the last 20 years" polls, we shouldn't add this. Hakken (talk) 15:37, 2 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

MTV is a reliable secondary source and they explicitly said Tiesto is the Godfather of EDM. Therefore, it is acceptable per policies because it matches the source and is not fabricated. That's all the Wikipedia policy asks for, to provide content with a reliable source and there you have it. I do not see the issue because there are no other reliable sources to dispute that Tiesto isn't the Godfather of EDM so it's best to let it be. - TheMagnificentist 15:55, 2 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah i don't dispute the Wikipedia policy and the reliability of MTV. It's just that it doesn't seem right to add this even when Tiësto doesn't see himself as such [11][12] and there are countless articles from reputed sites claiming that Giorgio Moroder is the godfather of EDM.[13][14][15][16][17][18] Hakken (talk) 18:21, 2 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Just because a source refers to someone using a cliche, doesn't mean the cliche should be added to the Wikipedia article. If several sources refer to a successful stockbroker "the king of Wall Street", and an editor wishes to add that to that person's Wikipedia article, it would be best to state "several sources have referred to him as 'the king of Wall Street'". In this case it's a one-off and should be removed, per MOS:WTW. Magnolia677 (talk) 00:00, 3 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
But Giorgio Moroder is actually the godfather of EDM, one of them — Preceding unsigned comment added by 161.111.58.252 (talk) 11:00, 23 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"MTV is a reliable secondary source and they explicitly said Tiesto is the Godfather of EDM." this is why wikipedia is such a mess. MTV as a reliable source, & pages upon pages of people relentlessly blowing other people's artistic achievements out of all proportion. he plays other people's records for a living, & occasionally edits them a bit. get a grip, fan-boys.

Tiesto doesn't play trance anymore

[edit]

In the "Background information," in "Genres," there should be an "(early)" right after the genre "trance." I edited the article and added that thing in parentheses but then it got edited back by someone. Why not "trance (early)"? Tiesto doesn't play trance anymore, only in his early days.
