Redirection

Wouldn't it make more sense to redirect to ROBLOX, since technically that's it's name. The roblox banner says ROBLOX, not Roblox.

Not from the wikipedia style guidelines. For instance SANYO always capitalise it, the wikipedia article is Sanyo, likewise SONY is Sony etc. --82.7.40.7 (talk) 19:19, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

No. Read WP:NAMING.--gordonrox24 (talk) 19:33, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Primary sources

I've ref'd a couple of points to a primary source (i.e. Roblox itself). Per Wikipedia:RS#Primary, secondary, and tertiary sources these need to have some care taken, but given they are referencing straight facts with no analysis or conclusions drawn the risk of original research is limited. If these areas get expanded/changed that status may of course evolve, but I think they will be fine for now. --82.7.40.7 (talk) 19:38, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Of course. I prefer secondary sources but they will do for now. Thanks.--gordonrox24 (talk) 20:09, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Changed "script" to "program"

Script refers to a script, while program refers to programming. Sounds much better. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Snateraar (talkcontribs) 19:44, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Scripting is programming. Programming is the correct wording.--gordonrox24 (talk) 20:07, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Turbo Builders Club

Shouldn't someone add a part about that? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Snateraar (talkcontribs) 19:46, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

I have removed your section about that. I can't even find a Primary source talking about it.--gordonrox24 (talk) 20:07, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Test server. And yes,I should make this article when it's on the real website. Snateraar (talk) 14:02, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

Anything on the test server is not 100% certain that it will be moved to the real site. When it is on the real site then you can start writing about it.--gordonrox24 (talk) 16:49, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
The main site lists it, so I've incorporated the details. --82.7.40.7 (talk) 18:46, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
I don't like using the site as a reference but I guess it is an uncontroversial fact...--Gordonrox24 | Talk 19:03, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

DO we really need so many links at the end of the article? I think the regular site and the Roblox Developers Blog should just be fine. --Briguy9876 (talk) 22:58, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Yeah. One of the links is an old reference, the Wiki is shut down, and the youtube link really isn't needed.--gordonrox24 (talk) 00:52, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
Okay, if Blockland gets to put their link on our page, can't we do the same on theirs? --Briguy9876 (talk) 02:33, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
Seems fair. I am sure it will be removed but I think putting it there is the correct thing to do.--gordonrox24 (talk) 12:06, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
The wiki isn't shut down, it's just locked.

Achive.

Hey, I was just thinking about archiving this talk page. I was thinking everything that was on the userpage should be archived so that the talk page is about this article, not the userpage. Anybody not ok with me doing that?--gordonrox24 (talk) 17:04, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

I like that idea.Snateraar (talk) 18:14, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

Creators and publishers

We honestly have to have a debate about whether Roblox is developed and managed by Roblox Corporation or by the actual creators (both of which are true). I've seen constant revisions in which the creator's names are changed to Roblox Corporation and back again. --Gert7 (talk) 10:34, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

I decided to quit reverting and go with Roblox Corp. The game is run/created/developed by the staff at Roblox Corp so we might as well leave it as general as possible.-- Gordonrox24  18:15, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

No. It always has to be specific Jeremjay24 (talk) 16:10, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

There should be a section on famous players like Telamon, Are92, SonicBoy, lemurboy07, Dude195, Are14, and jacbob. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.122.12.6 (talk) 19:57, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

This is a Encyclopedia, yes. It's supposed to contain lots of detail. 68.116.98.210 (talk) 19:02, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
Detail about features of the game, not random non-notable players.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 19:46, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
The game itself has questionable notability. Unless players are being written about in third party publications, they have no business being in the article. Otherwise, you'd get a lot of kids sticking themselves in the article. Enigmamsg 03:42, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

WOAH, WOAH, WOAH.... WOAH. Bad idea. Wikipedia is supposed to tell about the game, not to tell about famous players and whatnot. You have to find that out on your own!

This is not happening.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 18:04, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Terrible, terrible idea. Listen to Gordon, he actually knows what he's talking about. 1. Fame is unquantifiable. 2. It's not notable. 3. It's very subjective. 4. It doesn't belong on Wikipedia - do you see famous WoW players or Eve Online players on their pages? Not unless they become notable in the real world aka Leeroy Jenkins. - clockwork Awsum11 (talk) 00:18, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Does anyone know why people decided...

A full scale vandalism attack on the freaking ROBLOX page? Were we just a random attack victim? Anyone have any ideas?

--ANormalUsername1 (talk) 22:01, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
Wikipedia is always subject to Vandalism. That is why we have features like WP:TWINKLE and WP:ROLLBACK. About 1 thousand of my almost three thousand edits are vandalism reverts.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 22:04, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
This page has always been a vandal target, but today it was likely the target of a coordinated attack. I semiprotected and cleansed the page. Enigmamsg 22:05, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

First, I'm Paulwe, you may have heard of me, I have yet to get a Wikipedia account, but I'm on ROBLOX. Telamon WON'T like this. At all. Nada. Zip. Zero. Why? It doesn't say ANYTHING about mods. It doesnt matter if Telamon completly despises it or not. There are a lot of rules on Wikipedia to abide by, so we do. Mods = Not relevent, not enough 3rd party sources on H&D, and..what? --Briguy9876 (talk) 04:44, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

I don't know what you are getting at, Telamon is very happy with himself and his article.(My point being that roblox admins have no remit on Wikipedia). Jeremjay24, you obviously don't know that this is Wikipedia, an external site. Your edits are giving gordon more work to do and even though you think they're right, they're wrong. Gordon has been here for much longer than you and he's already told you no. So why do you insist on doing it? Furthermore, Paulwe, stop speaking for Telamon. Stop pretending to be the administrators' representative. I know he doesn't care about not being in the article because, guess what, it's not notable. Furthermore, I don't care. Now I'm starting to get very mad. Roblox was made in 2005! Why does Alexa say it was made in 2004? You don't know, but I really do. It said "Online Since", not "Game Started". No, it's completely different. Go to http://web.archive.org/, and it says the earliest backup is from Aug 25. It shows a blank page, which means it wasn't out even since "29-Jan-2004". And yeah, there is ONLY 1 USER made in 2004, which was "ROBLOX" and he is the whole staff who manually (not in the "register" section, but made it through either PHP or C#, I forget) programming.) made the account. If you enter http://www.roblox.com/User.aspx?ID=1, it will show Roblox's page. If you type http://www.roblox.com/User.aspx?ID=2, it will be "John Doe". Theory says he was made in February 11, 2005, and remember, he's the second user and he only has the veteran badge, not the admin or mod badge. So, Alexa gets information on every single site and when it was created and the stats of it. Does anyone else understand? Do I have to explain more? Omg. Jeremjay24 (talk) 15:30, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Oh yeah, Builderman's message. I swear to God I didn't edit this.

Dear Jeremjay24,

Roblox is a startup company based in Silicon Valley, California, established in 2005. It was started by David Baszucki. We are a team of hardcore engineers with a passion for quality in everything that we do. Our project straddles several rapidly-developing aspects of internet entertainment: virtual worlds, casual gaming, and user-constructed content.

Roblox is free to play and safe for kids aged 4-14. Our product remains under heavy development and is currently in public alpha testing. We deeply value community feedback as we continue to make Roblox into a game that will excite the imagination of the young and the young at heart.

Thanks!

If you need a reliable citation, here is the text in Builderman's Help Page. (search "Roblox Start") Roblox is a startup company based in Silicon Valley, California, established in 2005. Jeremjay24 (talk) 15:43, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Yeah it does say that in the help page, but we can't link to it. I am going to remove the date until we can figure this out.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 15:57, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Finally someone agreed. I'll just type in 2005 and put in the citation needed tag. Jeremjay24 (talk) 16:29, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Update: I found a Facebook page of Roblox. It's official. http://www.facebook.com/pages/ROBLOX/20519263579 Jeremjay24 (talk) 16:31, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Facebook is not official enough to be used as a WP:reliable source. It's difficult to prove that the people running a FB page are the same people running the site.--SarekOfVulcan (talk) 16:35, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
I believe this Roblox fan page is the official fan page of Roblox. Jeremjay24 (talk) 16:42, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Facebook is a group written by some random person. Sorry but Facebook is not going to cut it.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 16:43, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Woah woah wait there... Facebook is a site similar to MySpace where you can add friends, upload photos, etc. It is made by Mark Zuckerberg. And either David or John created the group. I'm thinking John. And it's official. But if it doesn't qualify, I could find another source. Jeremjay24 (talk) 16:57, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

In the Terms of Service, it says that 'You can display our pictures on your own personal web pages for your personal noncommercial use ONLY as long as you write either "Copyright 2005 ROBLOX Corporation All Rights Reserved. Used With Permission"'. The Internet Archive link for February 11, 2005 shows that the public beta had closed: the link for June 25 shows the game up and running.--SarekOfVulcan (talk) 16:58, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

I disagree with using the Alexa date -- that only shows the first day the webpage was up, not when the game was launched.--SarekOfVulcan (talk) 17:00, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
When Gordon and I was working on Briguy's page, he said that we can't rely on an internet archive. Jeremjay24 (talk) 17:02, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
How far can we take the archive though? I am not sure how they work. Are the images submitted by users? I am just not sure how reliable the archive is.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 17:03, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
They are robots created by The Web Archive company. Jeremjay24 (talk) 17:04, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
It is essentially completely reliable for "this is how the website looked on this date". Of course, the actual displayed website is subject to all the usual sourcing restrictions.--SarekOfVulcan (talk) 17:40, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Ok that makes sense. I will fix the dates asap.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 17:46, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Bear in mind that all this tells us is that it launched between February 11 and June 25, unless you can find the launch date somewhere on the June 25 page.--SarekOfVulcan (talk) 18:33, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Ok thanks, I will try to find it.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 19:16, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
I don't think we need the exact date. It'll be good to write the whole date, but just 2005 is good for now. Jeremjay24 (talk) 19:27, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Gameplay

We have a huge amount of text on the features of the site, but nothing on the actual game play itself. I think it is time we add something about in-game features.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 14:15, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

I have started the section.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 14:26, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
I have changed the name of Game play into Gameplay. Gameplay together makes one real word. Jeremjay24 (talk) 18:22, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
P.S. Should we make a section in Gameplay about Roblox Studio? If yes, I have something to say. Jeremjay24 (talk) 18:22, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Add whatever you want as long as it has to do with roblox's gamplay software.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 18:24, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, I've got nothing to say, because I'm mixed up with the orders of everything. I'll just create a new section. Jeremjay24 (talk) 15:00, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Hey, is http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/roblox a good source? It has info of Roblox Studio at the bottom. Jeremjay24 (talk) 15:07, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

That is an amazing link.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 19:55, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Great. I'll use it. Jeremjay24 (talk) 21:42, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Alexa Could Be Helpful

The date is when the site was started, not when roblox was established. But because they have graphs and stuff, I think we should prove as a source in H & D that roblox is a site visited thousands of times each day. 98.109.136.124 (talk) 14:51, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

If you can make it so that it does not sound promotional and can back it up, full steam ahead.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 15:10, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Are we even allowed to use sites like Alexa? I thought we tried to use it in the first deletion review for notability, and they didnt accept it. --Briguy9876 (talk) 02:48, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Alexa can be used to prove uncontroversial fact, not to assert notability. We can add it, but it doesn't take away from the need to find more news coverage or reliable third party sources.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 12:18, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, it looks good to me and it's not a blog or a wiki or anything. Jeremjay24 (talk) 14:25, 14 July 2009 (UTC) P.S. That was me Jeremjay24 (talk) 14:25, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Jeremjay24 Ideas of the Day

Chat Modes

We gotta explain of chat modes, because they are a very big aspect of the game and I believe should be mentioned. We should also add guests and the dislike of them by many characters. Jeremjay24 (talk) 12:04, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

You can add a section about guests, but not about people not liking them. That is personal opinion and should be backed with a reliable secondary source.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 16:14, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

We mentioned about the game, but not the building located in Silicon Valley. We should add at least a little information. Jeremjay24 (talk) 12:07, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Roblox using Wikipedia

I have looked at many of the hat and gear descriptions and many use Wikipedia articles without giving credit to Wikipedia. This is mostly with newer gears and hats. 8devon8 (talk) 18:40, 9 August 2009 (UTC-7)

Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia. Most of the text is free to reproduce.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 23:01, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Fan Site, Copy Editing, and Cleanup Discussion

Ehh, I noticed the tag. So I made the section... I really cannot tell how an encyclopedia article looks like in a fansite form. This is the second time I saw the copyediting thing, so does it mean bad grammar? And how does this article need to be cleaned up? I'm really confused. Jeremjay24 msg 13:51, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Ok, I have a few issues. Take a look at this Diff. Here I changed the wording of a few sentences. As you take a read through the article there are multiple times where the word choice and grammar is not the best. I say fansite as there are some sections that have a few peacock terms that make it read like an ad and almost like a blog. There is always room for improvement. Don't be afraid of these tags, just continue to work on the article to make it all the better. Drop me a line if you have further questions on my taggings.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 00:30, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
More super-descriptive third-party sources will fix almost all of the problems. It will expand the sections to make it look more article-like. I also think that a lot of the sections need to be merged to make it less strained out. --Briguy9876 (talk) 03:44, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

History and Development without Development!

Should we add that John Shedletsky created the Roblox wiki? (Proof: This Wiki was created by Telamon, and is currently maintained by the ROBLOX community. [Telamon is John]) How about the blog, created on December 8th 2006? We need these stuff in the development section. Jeremjay24 msg 18:24, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

We already have links to the roblox Wiki and the Roblox news blog. We know they are maintained by roblox and it really doesn't matter who at roblox created it.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 19:21, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Merging "Customization" and "Economy" into "Gameplay"

I'm a member of the WikiProject Video Games, and I work at a several other articles. I rarely edit at the RuneScape article, and they have "Economy" in the Gameplay. It seems like that we should merge a few things, as Gordonrox24 said this article is very messy and needs lots of cleanup, copy editing, and reliable sources. It would make a big difference, as we could use the 4 equal signs (====Title====) to easily merge them together. Jeremjay24 msg 14:27, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Yep. The virtual money is part of the gameplay. I will do that right now. Any objections let me know and I can undo it.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 19:14, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

I added a caption for the Roblox logo. It was since April 25, if you go on web archive, April 25th was the first day it showed the logo. The old one was the one on Are92's "Figure3". Jeremjay24 msg 14:39, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

There are a lot of good articles about ROBLOX and their partnership with Gorilla Nation - for example: http://www.prlog.org/10208811-gorilla-nation-kids-continues-to-grow-its-footprint-with-the-acquisition-of-robloxcom.html There are several others that are easy to find by googling. I think it might be a good idea for someone to add a section on this as these articles contain a lot of interesting comscore numbers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tysondude (talkcontribs) 05:35, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

I like that link, but don't like the context it is being used. I would rather remove that section and use this in a section talking about roblox being a good kids game, or about functions like the trade currency wich this article also talks about. I am going to remove some of the peacock terms from your section for now, and we will discuss further.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 12:01, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Any article that concerns things that children use or come in frequent contact with gets vandalized a lot. Roblox is, to my knowledge, primarily played by children and adolescents. Those are the age groups that are most likely to vandalize articles. They are also least likely to add references. Hope that helps. :) This article will likely require indefinite semi-protection. Administrators

As many games do, ROBLOX has certain players who work for the company and can upload further things than the regular ROBLOX user can. They can upload Hats and Gear, as normal players can upload only Shirts and Pants. These players are known as "Administrators," or more commonly, "Admins." These players are adored by the ROBLOX community. Some of the most famous ones are Builderman, Telamon, and ReesemcBlox. They all have around 30 games created by them, as the most a regular user can possibly get is 25. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Deady118 (talkcontribs) 22:41, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Another edit request

The history and development section says: "Roblox has reached an income of approximately $2.3 million to help kids build games."

The reference doesn't support this claim. Roblox received $2.18 million in funding via an equity issue, that is not income. And the last part "to help kids build games" is marketing hype. --82.7.40.7 (talk) 22:41, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Do you have a reference? Jeremjay24 13:32, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
You want a reference that the current reference doesn't support the claim? It should be pretty apparent but looking at the current reference it doesn't state anything about income, it says "... has raised about $2.3 million in a first round of funding, according to a regulatory filing.". If you look at the regulatory filing it has tried to issue $2.3million of equity and most of that has been subscribed with a small amount unsubscribed. Even if you want to ignore looking at the filing itself (as a primary source, though that doesn't matter here), the referenced material still doesn't talk about income. As to the "help kids build games" as marketing hype, I think that's pretty self evident. --82.7.40.7 (talk) 15:51, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
Look, you need a reference and I'll replace the reference. And with the "help kids build games", what else should there be? Jeremjay24 20:46, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure how much more simple I can make this - I do not want to replace the reference - the fault is not in the reference, the fault is in the text in the article, I am asking for an edit to fix the text in the article.
The reference there does not support the claim, we then have three options (1) Find a reference which does support the claim, this reference doesn't exist as the didn't get that money as income (2) Remove the sentence completely as unsupported by the reference or (3) fix the text so it matches the reference. I am suggesting that (3) is the correct option, fix the text so it is actually supported by the reference.
With regard the last part of "what else should be there" - nothing, we should conform to a neutral point of view and state the facts absent the peacock terms and marketing i.e. "Roblox has gained $2.18 million in funding via an equity issue." it needs say no more or less than that. --82.7.40.7 (talk) 22:16, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Bias and lack of criticisms section

There are numerous references to ROBLOX's paid benefits which do not benefit the article itself, and could be considered bias. The sources do not seem reliable enough either (random financial blogs and the company's website itself) and there is no criticisms section, of which there are numerous. One of the people who chiefly edits the article also appears to be a moderator of the ROBLOX forums. 90.201.84.152 (talk) 16:04, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

I have dealt with that issue already.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 23:31, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

There is still bias in the article. The "premium offers" section is totally unneeded and seems to only serve as advertising. I got a message saying "I looked at Reference 24. The Gorilla Nation one. The article says Gorilla Nation bought ROBLOX. >< I looked at who added it, I noticed it was you. Please, check it next time. XD"

But from what I see #24 is not Gorilla Nation... am I missing something?--Gordonrox24 | Talk 21:38, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

My fault, it's #29. Monkey Fox Contributes! . 23:44, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
That's weird. Does Gorilla Nation own Roblox? Jeremjay24 14:41, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
Ok, I looked into it. Maybe the webpage isn't worded very well. Gorrilla Nation is the site that provides the ads for the Roblox site. That's all.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 00:24, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
I thought that was Google. Jeremjay24 21:58, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Lua scripted video game?

Roblox lets players program their places with Lua, but Roblox itself isn't a game made with Lua. So for example, WoW is in the category because Blizzard made the game with Lua. The game is an RPG, not a building game like Roblox. I have no idea how the devs made the game, but I'll look into it tomorrow. This is Jeremjay24, by the way. Places

Amazingly, in Roblox, you can make your own place (for current Robloxians, "What a surprise...")! You can then save the changes and other people can visit your place. Everytime someone visits your place, you get one Ticket(Tix), the currency of Robloxia. RHYUAKN (talk) 21:39, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
