Hope no one minds--I've purged a lot a non-consequential external links that had been added by various people. A few of them were duplicates of links in New Media art festivals, others were fairly minor websites.

Merge ?

[edit]

I was looking to flesh out this article a bit more and I noticed a hell of a lot of redundancy in this article and in the articles regarding net.art and digital art, as well as other art types discussed here.
I'm fairly new to wikipedia, but is there any sort of organizational utilities to help create a hierarchy of definition. Define relations between the types of arts, and get more specific about the types of arts when needed. What differentiates net.art, digital art, computer art, internet art, etc?

Rhisome and new media history

[edit]

I've moved this text here: some of it is useful, but "new media" predates the 90s by a long-shot. More sources are needed. freshacconci talktalk 20:00, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am neither the author of the following text, nor the editor who placed it on this talk page, tho i have tweaked the formatting. The preceding talk-contrib < Freshacconci > placed it on this page (outside the scope of any sig) but failed to make it immediately apparent that it is not a comment on the accompanying article. (Surely Fresh... meant, by "this text", the following -- but it is i who has "tamed" its included refs by affixing here the {{refs}} call that clarity begs for:)
The term "new media" originated in the world of mass media and advertising in the early 1990s to refer to computer networks and the internet as channels for distributing content, outside traditional channels of print and broadcast media. Correspondingly, the term new media art was employed around the same time to refer to works using digital and networked technologies.[1] Over time, the term new media art has become more inclusive, but confusion between the differing uses of the term "new media" in the worlds of advertising and art remains. The history of Rhizome (organization) illustrates this shift well. The organization was founded in 1996 as a discussion platform for artists working on the internet, but as itgrew it came to recognize, support, and preserve art that engaged technology but was not necessarily internet-based. In 2007, Rhizome modified the wording of its mission statement, removing the phrase "new media art" and replacing it with "emerging artistic practices that engage technology." [2]

Six months later, two colleagues reverted from this spot, promptly, in quick succession, and without invoking WP:VAND, two brief unsigned comments by one IP; IMO those comments deserved no response(s), but they hardly constituted clear vandalism. Anyone further concerned about the reversions will IMO be supported as adequately as is feasible in informing their own opinions by the hist excerpt this link provides.

Move to Media arts

[edit]

I think this article should be titled "Media arts" (Google 2.600.000) instead of "New media art" (Google 750.000) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.191.102.171 (talk) 01:42, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, we have 2011 after all, New Media has become Media. --Panoramedia (talk) 12:45, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
New Media is the accepted term in visual arts. "Media" refers to any medium an artist works with. freshacconci talktalk 14:55, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List of New Media Artists

[edit]

Why is the list so short? Is there a hierarchy being used in order to determine who is or is not appropriate for the list? Anyone mind if I add a few more notable artists to the list? Ecnal24 (talk) 00:26, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I believe Charlotte Moorman would be a good addition to this list since she was a key collaborator to Nam June Paik, although her medium was the cello and performance - she collaborated on the electronic sculptures that Paik made. Jaredckelley (talk) 15:54, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Can't figure out why I can't add information regarding some New Media Art exhibits and peices that relate, Wikipedia just keeps deleting it. Is there a rule I am missing regarding this?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Mstrehlke (talkcontribs) 09:41, 29 October 2009

Recent deletions from list

[edit]

An IP has unilaterally decided that a couple of dozen artists listed on this page are not significant and their presence indicated "self-promotion". This has been reverted by two editors now. Obviously I don't want to give to much credence to this sort of thing but it should be mentioned here as I'm sure they will be back again. The IP has been warned twice now. freshacconci talktalk 01:01, 1 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Technological determinism...

[edit]

This article really suffers from technological determinism, eg. "The origins of new media art can be traced to the moving photographic inventions of the late 19th century such as .... and "During the 1960s the development of then new technologies of video produced the new media art experiments of ... " I've tried to add some lines in the first paragraph that contest such notions and hope others will also contribute to this task. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ed Shanken (talkcontribs) 01:00, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Demoscene

[edit]

Demoscene is not linked here, nor in Computer art. Why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.231.126.106 (talk) 12:12, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Added it here. (As for why, it just wasn't there, that's all. No specific reason that I can think of.) darthbunkpakt dunfT 15:18, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge of New media artist into New media art

[edit]

Significant overlap, exactly the same topic - example: we don't have articles on Painting & 'Painter' or Surrealism & 'Surrealist artist.' Acousmana 13:34, 12 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reworked Themes, History, Longevity, and Lead section

[edit]

Hi everyone I reworked the themes section of the article by adding subheadings and expanding information on related themes. Jeriblank (talk) 19:34, 1 December 2021 (UTC).[reply]

I've also added some citations to the history section, and expanded the section with information from Digital performance: A history of new media in theater, dance, performance art, and installation & New media futures: The rise of women in the digital arts. Jeriblank (talk) 21:04, 1 December 2021 (UTC).[reply]

Hi everyone, added some info to the lead to reflect the changes I've made including adding some info about the themes, preservation, and history of NMA. I also added some specific info about preservation under longevity Jeriblank (talk) 19:36, 13 December 2021 (UTC).[reply]
