Date

[edit]

Is it really necessary to append each date with 'AD'? There is no information about the town of Badme before 1 AD so it seems unnecessary to me. Please comment. Merhawie 23:15, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Location

[edit]

Yom, the location is no longer disuputed. I believe the EEBC ruled that it was located in Eritrea. Do you disagree? But you are correct, it is not a stub, thank you for fixing that.

The EEBC made its ruling, but it wasn't accepted (however illegally) by Ethiopia and remains disputed and under Ethiopian control, so to assign definitively the town to one country or another is not correct. — ዮም | (Yom) | TalkcontribsEthiopia 23:52, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I was under the impression that Ethiopia now accepted it without reservation but ok, thank you for the clarification. Merhawie 00:26, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Neutrality

[edit]

Somehow I don't see this as being neutral:

"Despite initially agreeing to abide by the terms of the Algiers Agreement, Ethiopia refused to withdraw to the border established by the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission and rejected its ruling. As a result, thousands of internally displaced people have remained in refugee camps and the threat of renewed war continues. This is all because of Ethiopia's refusal to honor the Algeries agreement. The Weyane administration is very corrupt." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.179.122.109 (talk) 19:02, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed; even though Ethiopian forces currently illegally occupy the land. It does not validate their claim to it, as the EEBC has already ruled 10 years ago that Badme is undisputed Eritrean territory, and Ethiopia has not made a claim thereafter. Requesting for comment from Wikipedia geography experts, based on available sources; Where is Badme(currently) located in terms of national boundaries?

1. Eritrea

2. Ethiopia

Thank you scope creep. I had changed it to "Badme, a town in Eritrea" from the unspecific statement "Badme, a town in the Horn of Africa". I found it odd that it was written that way for awhile when all the sources showed Badme is a town in Eritrea as you stated. Thanks!Authorityofwiki (talk) 16:54, 23 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neither, it is much more complicated See Professor Jan Abbink's paper explaining this at [1]. Our article on Badme is misleading, as is the map and coordinates shown. The concept of "Badme" means different things to Eritrea and Ethiopia. Onceinawhile (talk) 22:00, 23 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Read source but don't see other than an opinion piece of a "Professor Jan Abbinks". Does Professor Abbinks override the Agreed Upon decision of the EEBC(Eritrean Ethiopian Border Commission) of which Ethiopia signed and agreed to? The demarcation of the border per the EEBC and the following demarcation per the UN does give us a Line in the Sand to say where Badme is located. If we are to use arguments from every professor and their viewpoint, then No Borders Exist Anywhere and London, Ethiopia could be as plausible as London, Argentina! all the while deny England, the London the world(UN) recognises as England's town.Authorityofwiki (talk) 23:30, 23 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Prof Abbink is one of a select group of Western professors focusing on Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.[2]. We have only one other scholarly source in this article (Dr. Daniel Kendie), whose work is not available online. The other other useful source in this article is the New York Times article, which itself is based upon Abbink's work. If we want this article to be accurate, we need to take Abbink's work seriously. Is not the UN, EEBC, Algiers Agreement, Google Maps, and the sources mentioned by the mapping systems not sufficient enough to determine the geographical location of Badme town?Authorityofwiki (talk) 20:00, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What is Badme?

[edit]

Excerpt below from Jan Abbink's paper:[3]

One big confusion has to be cleared up first and may hold the key to the solution. On most maps there is a place called Yirga, which seems to coincide with the location of Badme. Yirga's geographic location is 14° 37' 60N latitude - 37° 55' 0E longitude. In a news dispatch of 12 July 1999, an AFP reporter noted that local people spoke of “Badme” when they meant the village formally named “Yirga”. In official Ethiopian documents, however, Badme is the name of a place in the woreda (or district) of Tahtay-Adiabo. In the Ethiopian census report of 1994 there is no mention of a town called Yirga, which confirms the idea that Badme and Yirga are one and the same. This would answer the question of where exactly Badme is, because under all projections and treaty lines Yirga, with the mentioned coordinates, is securely in Ethiopian territory, some 20 km north of Shiraro town on the road to Eritrea. Also on the first map on the border area issued by the UN in November 2000 (Map no. 3790, Rev. 4, subsequently withdrawn) Yirga is located in Ethiopian territory. There is, however, a word-play going by both Eritrea and Ethiopia on Badme, because it can refer to the Badme or Badumma plain extending across both countries. So “Badme” in the wider sense, except for Yirga village, can legitimately be claimed as being in either country.

And below from BBC News, via Global Policy Forum:[4]

More than one Badme? Each side accuses the other of illegally invading or occupying Badme. Badme (alternatively spelt Badime, Baduma, or Badame) is the name given to the region that includes the contested territory. But Badme is also a village - or possibly even two villages. Neither side has pinpointed the exact location of the Badme which is supposedly the point of contention. A map published by Michelin in 1994 shows "Badime" exactly on the border. But several other maps2 show "Badime" clearly on the Ethiopian side. The most recent edition of the Michelin map omits "Badime", and instead situates a village called Yirga on the Ethiopian side. Reports from the area speak of a village officially named Yirga - but commonly known as Badme. The writer Margaret Fielding1 says she visited a village called Badme 5km to the west - ie on the Eritrean side - of the "internationally recognised border", by which she means the straight line of the 1902 treaty. The mystery of the moving village has been attributed to a moving boundary - different surveyors may produce different versions of the artificial line. No village of Badme featured on the 1902 treaty - by some accounts, there was no village there until the 1960s.

Based on the EEBC: [5] We can atleast use the maps to determine: 1.Where the Boundary between Eritrea and Ethiopia is? 2. Where Yirga is? 3. Where "Badme town/village" is?Authorityofwiki (talk) 20:16, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, we must be able to figure this out.
Here is an excerpt from the UN in 2005: "With respcct to the events in the vicinity of Badme that occurred during the period from May 6-12, 1998, the Commission takes note of the sharply different accounts offered by the Parties as to the precise location of the incidents of May 6 and 7"[6]
Onceinawhile (talk) 20:32, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
From the EU: "Ethiopia started a campaign in an attempt to get the decision reversed, stating, amongst other arguments, that the delimitation was absurd since it established the border in the middle of the Badme village"[7]
Onceinawhile (talk) 20:39, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The UN EEBC "virtually demarcated" the border and placed Badme in Eritrea. Ethiopia's rejection doesn't take away from the fact the international community, UN concluded that Badme is in Eritrea's border hence why the maps place it in Eritrea.Authorityofwiki (talk) 20:43, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

According to the map systems, Yirga, is established some 40 miles, inside the Ethiopian border, from Badme. Border dispute aside, I don't see any evidence at the moment which says that the border dispute has moved Badme into Ethiopia, which seems to have ended in March 2016, withe the last prisoner exchange. Minor changes occurred, with Ethiopian troops still occupying Badme. Ongoing maintenance of mapping systems would have taken cognizance of the border clash. The UN awards Badme to Eritrea. Eritrean village, inside Eritrea, which the mapping systems show. scope_creep (talk) 10:54, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Based on Scope creep's map systems: 1. Yirga is Not Badme 2. Yirga is in Ethiopia 3. Badme is in Eritrea 4. Ethiopian military are occupying Badme (Eritrean village/town). This answers the "What is Badme?" and "Badme location" questions. Authorityofwiki (talk) 02:08, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
