Great backhands, Pete Sampras

[edit]

A person, under multiple IP addresses starting with 220.255.1, is trying to add Pete Sampras to the list of current players still using single-handed backhand. I reverted his/her edits, because the purpose of that sentence is discussing the increasingly rare single-handed backhand among current players, as opposed to great players of the past, discussed in the previous section. Therefore, Pete Sampras, as a retired player, logically doesn't belong there—he is simply not a current player. The section says a single-handed backhand was used by great players in the 1980s, and then it says it is still used by some current players. So it cannot mention Pete Sampras as an example of a current player, because firstly, the sentence uses present tense (the word "is"), and Sampras is a player of the past, secondly, Sampras started in 1990, when single-handed backhand was still quite normal (for example, Lendl and McEnroe mentioned as the players of the 80s were still active back then), so mentioning him as a current counterexample to the players of the 1980s when the single-handed backhand was normal doesn't make much sense. So please don't put it back without discussing it here or reorganizing the whole section so that it actually makes sense. Thanks—J. M. (talk) 18:01, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
