Henry Searle (né Trump;[2][3] born 29 March 2006) is a British tennis player. In July 2023 he won the Wimbledon boys' singles title.[4][5]
Career
[edit]2022-2023: Junior British National and Wimbledon champion
[edit]In 2022 he won the Under 16 & Junior British National Championship.[6]
Searle reached the quarterfinals at the 2023 French Open boys singles before losing to eventual winner Dino Prizmic.[7][8]
In July 2023, he defeated the top seed Juan Carlos Prado Ángelo in Boys' singles at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships.[9] He followed that up with wins over Manas Dhamne, Arthur Gea and João Fonseca, without dropping a set.[10][11][12] He defeated American junior Grand Slam winner Cooper Williams in the semifinals, again winning in straight sets.[13] During the semifinal he was recorded as serving a first serve at 129 mph. In the final he faced Yaroslav Demin again winning in straight sets, becoming the first British junior to win the boys' title at Wimbledon since Stanley Matthews, in 1962.[14][15] In the final he had a serve registered at 134 mph.[16]
2024: ATP and Major debuts
[edit]In April, he defeated top seed JJ Wolf at the 2024 Tallahassee Tennis Challenger, his third victory in a Challenger level event.[17]
He made his ATP debut at the 2024 Eastbourne International as a lucky loser but lost to Lorenzo Sonego.[18]
For his Major debut, he received a wildcard for the 2024 Wimbledon Championships,[19] losing in the first round to Marcos Giron.[20]
Coaches
[edit]Searle's coach is Morgan Phillips, the head coach at the Lawn Tennis Association's national academy in Loughborough. He said that the Wimbledon boy's victory, and the associated rankings increase, could "fast-track" him into senior tournaments.[21]
Personal life
[edit]He is the son of cricketer Harvey Trump, from Wolverhampton,[22] and the grandson of Gerald Trump.
As a keen footballer, he is a fan of his local Premier League team Wolverhampton Wanderers.[23]
He attends Loughborough Amherst School which partners with Loughborough University to support the National Tennis Academy.
