Elestor B.V. is a Dutch company established in 2014, specializing in the development and implementation of large-scale, long-duration energy storage (LDES) systems utilizing hydrogen-based flow batteries.[1] [2] The company's technology employs an electrochemical process, where two active materials are separated by membrane stacks, enabling the movement of protons to store and release energy during charging and discharging cycles.[3] Elestor's batteries are designed to be efficient, scalable, and cost-effective, offering storage systems that can be deployed globally to meet the increasing demand for renewable energy.[4] The technology can store energy for durations ranging from 8 to over 100 hours, which is crucial for stabilizing power grids and optimizing the use of wind and solar energy.[5] By addressing the intermittency of renewable energy sources, Elestor's long-duration storage systems facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the grid, contributing to a stable and reliable energy supply.[6]

Elestor's technology has the potential to serve as a substitute for fossil fuel power plants at a gigawatt-hour (GWh) scale, functioning as "bi-directional power plants."[7] Designed for large-scale, long-duration energy storage, this technology aims to play a role in the energy sector comparable to that of lithium-ion batteries within the mobility industry. By facilitating the large-scale storage and distribution of renewable energy, it offers a sustainable alternative to conventional power generation methods, supporting the transition to cleaner energy sources.[8][9]

Elestor secured investment from Equinor[10], Vopak[11], and climate-focused investment funds and government bodies committed to advancing sustainable technology.[12][13][14] In recognition of its innovation, the Amsterdam Centre for Business Innovation at the University of Amsterdam named Elestor as one of the ten most innovative companies in the Netherlands. The company has successfully completed several pilot projects and is preparing to launch its first commercial products by 2025, with a focus on long-duration energy storage technologies.[15][16]

Research and Development

[edit]

Hydrogen-bromine flow batteries (H₂/Br₂-RFB) are a notable advancement in stationary energy storage, capable of achieving energy storage densities of up to 200 watt-hours per liter (Wh/L). Recent research has concentrated on the development of high energy density electrolytes, particularly utilizing concentrated hydrobromic acid (HBr) solutions with concentrations up to 7.7 M. These studies have investigated the behavior of polybromide ions (Br₂ⁿ⁺¹; where n = 1–3) in these electrolytes, focusing on their effects on electrolytic conductivity and operational limits.[33]

Using Raman spectroscopy, researchers have determined the concentrations of various polybromides, including tribromide (Br₃⁻) and pentabromide (Br₅⁻), which are found in equal concentrations throughout the studied range, with heptabromide (Br₇⁻) observed at higher bromine concentrations. The conductivity of these electrolytes is primarily influenced by proton concentration, with the presence of higher polybromides leading to decreased overall conductivities. Additionally, bromine solubility within the electrolyte increases with rising bromide concentrations, which can affect battery performance. Experimental cycling in single cells has revealed operational limitations related to both conductivity and solubility.[33]

The H₂/Br₂-RFB technology is designed to facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, into the electricity grid. This technology exhibits rapid electrode kinetics, resulting in high power densities and energy efficiencies; significant achievements include peak power densities of 1.4 W/cm² and voltage efficiencies of 91% at 400 mW/cm².[33]

Ongoing research efforts are focused on enhancing stack performance, optimizing component costs, and improving membrane selectivity to minimize the crossover of hydrobromic acid, bromine, and polybromides. Preliminary techno-economic analyses suggest that H₂/Br₂-RFB systems may be competitive with conventional lithium-ion batteries, with expectations of capital cost reductions arising from technological advancements.[34]

Elestor B.V. is actively engaged in the development of H₂/Br₂-RFB systems, exploring flow field designs to address challenges such as electrolyte stagnation and flow limitations.[35] Their investigations utilize computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and experimental validations to optimize the flow behavior within these batteries.[36]

Funding round

[edit]

In 2022, Elestor completed a €30 million Series A funding round, led by Equinor Ventures, the corporate venture capital unit of Equinor, a Norwegian energy company.[13][37][14] The round was co-led by Invest-NL, a Dutch impact investment group established by the Dutch government, with a contribution of €15 million backed by the European Investment Fund.[38] Other participants in the investment round included Royal Vopak's[39] venture capital arm, Somerset Capital Partners, as well as existing investors EIT InnoEnergy and Enfuro Ventures.[37] [40]The funding is being used to advance the commercialization of Elestor's hydrogen-based flow battery technology, focusing on scaling production to the gigawatt level.[41] This technology is designed to store renewable energy, such as that generated by wind and solar farms, in a scalable and cost-efficient manner.[42] Vopak and Elestor have partnered to work on the industrialization of electricity storage using flow batteries, with the investment supporting Elestor's development and strategy for long-term energy storage.[43][44]
