Denis Moynihan
Denis Moynihan (b Rathmore, County Kerry 16 June 1885; d Tralee 5 December 1975)[1] was an Irish Roman Catholic bishop.[2]
Moynihan was educated at St Brendan's College, Killarney.[3] He trained for the priesthood at the Irish College in Paris.[3] Moynihan served curacies at St Hugh of Lincoln, Wavertree;[4] St James, Bootle;[5] St Cronan, Caherdaniel; [6] and St John, Tralee.[7] He joined the staff of St Mary's Cathedral, Killarney in 1922; and became its administrator in 1928. He was Bishop of Ross from 1941[8] until 1952 [9] when he was transferred to Kerry.[a] He retired on 17 July 1969.[10]

Originally established as a chapel-of-ease from St Clare in 1898, the church of St Hugh of Lincoln was opened in 1904. It was built at the expense of Sir William Nelson, a shipowner who lived in Croxteth Drive, and was named in memory of his brother Hugh.
