Pomeroy or De La Pommeraie is a surname founded around 1066. Currently spelled as Pomeroy and the many variations which have occurred over time and geopolitical location. These variations include Pomroy, Pomery, Pumroy, Pummery , Pummeroy, de Pomerai , de Pomeroy , and Pommery.

Etymology

Despite the clearly found words of Pomme and Roy in the name , meaning Apple and Royal , the name given to Radulphus was of a locale: Pommeraye. St. Sauveur De La Pommeraye , is a small community in La Manche , Normandy. The parish was known of course for its orchards and supply of a particularly sweet apple to the royal houses at that time.

History

William (Guillame) , Hugo and Radulphus (Rolfe) sons of Roger were brothers who accompanied William The Conquerer in the subjection of England and fought in the Battle of Hastings. Radulphus held a rank which in today's terms would be Chief of Staff. Hugo is believed to have died during the battle. Although brothers , the two came to have differing surnames as at this time surnames were just being adopted due to the Norman reliance on pedigree within feudalism. William became known as William Capra (or Chievre) and Radulphus took the surname De La Pommeraie.

After the Battle of Hastings , in 1066 , Radulphus (b 1030 son of Roger) was bestowed a considerable amount of land and holdings in England. According to the Domesday Survey in 1086 as Radulphus De La Pommeraie , he received 58 Lordships in County Devon , 3 in Somerset , and 2 in Cornwall. At this time their sister Beatrix , became Abbess of The Benedictine Abbey at St Michaels Mount which she held for William , she also held Xether Stowey for Ralf (Radulphus) and is named as his sister in the Exchequer Book.

Berry Pomeroy in Devon County is the home of Berry Pomeroy Castle erected by Radulphus. The family retained possession until the reign of King Edward VI and The Prayer Book War in 1549 when the castle was sold to Edward , Duke of Somerset. Historians differ widely as to the manner in the way the Seymours succeeded them in ownership.
