On 4 November 2024, a bus travelling from the Garhwal to the Kumaon region in Uttrakhand, India fell over 200 metres down hilly terrain in the Almora area.[2][3] At least 36 people died and 24 others were injured.[4][5][6]
Accident
The private bus was running on Garhwal-Kumaon route. When the bus was about two kilometres from Marchula Almora, it fell over 200 metres down hilly terrain in the Almora area.[7][8] The bus was carrying about 60 passengers at the time of the incident.[9]
Rescue operations
Rescue operations are said to be underway, with police from the Nainital district and three teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) being dispatched to the site.[10] The rescued passengers have been rushed to nearby hospitals. Three critically injured passengers have been airlifted to AIIMS Rishikesh for advanced care.[11]
Impact
The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for the injured. Additionally, he said to have instructed the district administration to expedite rescue and relief operations.[4]
