Uncertain and problematic. Has been traditionally considered a cognate of Ancient Greek αὐδή (audḗ, “voice, speech”) and Sanskrit वदति (vádati, “to say, speak”) from presumed Proto-Indo-European *h₂wodh₂- (“to speak”).^[1]

Kloekhorst derives it instead from Proto-Indo-European *weth₂- (“to say”), making it a cognate of Latin vetō (“to advise not to”) and Welsh dweud (“to say”).^[2]

The word shows preservation of the original PIE heteroclitic inflection with secondary hysterodynamic accentuation of an originally proterodynamic word (similar to Hittite 𒂊𒌍𒄯 (e-eš-ḫar /⁠ēšḫar⁠/, “blood”) and Hittite 𒁁𒋻 (pát-tar /⁠pattar⁠/, “wing”)).
