[edit]First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 겹〮 (Yale: kyép). From earlier *kyóp. Compare Jeju ᄌᆞᆸ (jawp, “layer”), Middle Korean ᄀᆞᆲ〮 (kólp, “layer”).
